More seriously though, I don't really think I'd care very much if I was murdered while unconscious, or if I'd been killed prior to developing a sense of self. So what is the problem precisely?
I think they would agree that a baby is a human. as to individual, that depends on what you mean by that. I don't consider anything that isn't self aware to be an individual.
alright, I'll go back to an hour before my first breath. as far as I can recall, I was not aware of anything, certainly not aware of a sense of self. Without a sense of self I can't really be an individual human bieng can I? I was rather more of a parasite than anything else.
Interestingly, when WinFS is enabled, file letters are hidden from the end user
It took me until the mention of LFN and 8.3 before I realised that "file letters" meant "file extensions". What I want to know is: what kind of individual knows what those are, what they're used for, has them enabled, and yet doesn't know the proper term for them?
My response to any of my friends who mention suicide is always: "I'll help you buy the gun or the rope, or help you pick another method. However, if you try it and screw it up, I don't ever want to see you, or talk to you again." At that point every one of them usually takes a step back and actually thinks about it. It's not a perfect method, or one I recommend, but I can say that none of my (incredibly stupid and supposedly depressed) friends has killed themselves.
Personally, I don't see how it's my responsibility or even my business if someone wants to die, and I certainly am not going to use every trick in the book to guilt trip them into life. What I won't do is -not- argue them out of it, then have sympathy for them if they can't go through with it completely or competently. I can, and would, have sympathy for someone who planned it, prepared, and then stopped themselves before starting the process, but halfway through is not the place to stop.
IMO taking your own life is just as bad as taking another persons life.
How does this follow? Should a person not be permitted to do anything they desire so long as it harms none? If I chose to kill myself in a way that doesn't endanger anyone how is it wrong, evil, bad, or in any way akin to forcefully taking the life of someone who desires to live?
The feelings of others really has no bearing on it. If I let the fact that some of my actions might make someone feel bad alter my actions, then I should probably do nothing at all for fear of emotionally damaging some random individual by rudely breathing too loudly in their vicinity.
You couldn't find anything? the Church of Euthanasia had a list of methods, their pros and cons, and a recommnedation on methods. google for it, and remember: helium is cheap, inert, and safe.
Your problem would then be: You speak "Queen's English" and we speak "English" See the difference? One of us is speaking a dialect. given that your language is the one with the modifier to the noun, I would normally take that as an indication of which language is the modified form. (Yes, I am aware that "English" or "American English" is the modified form, though I doubt you can consider either the US version or the UK version to be "pure")
what would smaller government people do for us though? I mean, I can't see the point of replacing the current ones with midgets. what if the wrong midget won?
Whoa! slow down there, you should gradually ease youre way up to the more powerful experiences. that's why the scale is IE, Operal , Firefox/Mozilla, lynx, telnet, links2. Skipping steps can lead to not having the tolerance to handle it and overdoses can be fatal.
Do you really want Jar Jar, even in agony and slow painful death, taking up -more- movie time? give him a 3 second torture shot, do something else, come back with a caption that says [6 years later] and have him gasp his last and expire.
You need your fix, huh? How abot trying something.. a little stronger. Sure it's been around a while, and yeah it can be dangerous... but have you ever thought about trying some of.. this. First taste is free.
If all it does is provide the illusion of saftey to the masses, it has served some purpose.
I think that this is a very popular view, both amongst politicians and amongst the masses. However, in my opinion this is actually an incredibly dangerous view.
If they "feel" safe, people have a tendency to relax their guard and assume all will be well. Which is not to say that safety is a bad thing, but the illusion of safety is worse than the absence of safety.
I thought I was the only person who did this, and I always wondered why I did it. -I- have always felt it was explicitly clear what that variable did, but the people I've allowed (tormented with the threat of allowing, actually) to read my code seem to never know why I created it until I actually return it.
I like to think I'm a lot like many other people here. When making purchasing decisions, I decide what I want based on rational criteria such as price, features, customer service and so forth. I tell myself that none of the millions of ads I've seen in my life are shaping my decisions.
However, that turns out not to be the case. (Sorry, I just have been looking for an excuse to use that line.) In my Technical Writing course, I've noticed that the examples that the majority of the class will fixate on, and consider the best examples tend to be the colorful, flashy, uninformative ones. They've been conditioned to accept advertising as aprimary source of information and will make decisions based on it. I find it disheartening when I'm the only individual in class who actually reads the content of an example to find the one I like best.
Listen to my what?

I didn't say anything about sens of self indicating live. I said you're not an individual human being without a sense of self.
It's an IE only nonstandard extension to the standard.

If they keep on going like that, pretty soon we'll have Intel turn into a religion.

/me just pictured Ben Stein standing at a podium and saying "Ballmer... Ballmer..."

I have a certain suspicion that most Americans ... are too busy ... declaring war on abstract nouns...
Now that's a good one! I, as an American who values Freedom, hereby declare War on Abstract Nouns! For Great Freedom!
What do you propose I do with my loyal army of trained midget assassin puppeteers now?
Invade Iraq?

I never had a problem with slashdot. What exactly makes it "unreadable"?
I'm sorry, I just can't respond to that in any meaningful, intelligent manner.

So, basically, you're waiting for Microsoft Palladium?
