  1. Probably a good time to switch on Cringely: MS To Hurt Linux Via USB Enhancements · · Score: 0

Maybe firewire or something like it should be the alternative. If there is a royalty penalty for each USB port or device there may be a point where some motherboard manufacturers offer usb as an option.

  2. I like Fortran on FORTRAN 2003 Accepted as Standard · · Score: 0

My biggest concern is the ability for Fortran to co-exist with other languages, specifically C. I would like to use Fortran for the things it does well and be able to combine it with my C code for the things C does well. Unfortunately, the compilers are not always compatible. I wish this would be addressed better in the future.

  3. My mistake on The Living Room Candidate · · Score: 0

I took this for another reality makeover show which compared different living rooms and chose a winner. I have been looking to update my living room, I just misunderstood the "candidate" part.

  4. Taken as a cautionary tale. on Open Source Security: Still A Myth · · Score: 0

There are many open source projects. Some are quite secure and others aren't. Some of the insecure ones are projects that a few programmers are doing in their spare time for for their own enjoyment or to share ideas they have had. People are usually warned if a project is stable or not, maybe we should have a security warning as well. That way people won't assume that the project is secure. Ok we have been warned.

  5. A step forward for anime on Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence in Theaters · · Score: 0

The plot is closer to the questions asked by Blade Runner than I, Robot (or the stories from which they came). If you look at the reviews that really matter, that is the reviewers that "get it" it is definitely worth seeing. I have already gotten emails telling me how sweet the visuals are. I guess you can take off points for the subtitles, but the whole experience in a good theater is amazing.

  6. Are they conceding FF8-11 as failures? on PS2 Final Fantasy 7 Spinoff · · Score: 0

They seem to be commercially. Bring back the fun. Chocobos rule!

  7. Actually the first filter is "Who Cares" on Google's Math Puzzle · · Score: 0

If you even care about the problem you meet the first cut. The second problem seperates the "men from the boys." Yes, you can cheat but what does that buy you?

  8. Which one will Mel Brooks choose on War of the Worlds Remake Already Shot Overseas · · Score: 3, Funny

For his next spoof. Will the Speilberg movie be title "Band of Martians"?

  9. Dual booting is from hell on GNOME 2.8 Released · · Score: -1, Troll

I would like to see better support for two operating systems on the same box. I have to use Microsoft products for work, but I would prefer some flavor of linux for personal use. However, XP and linux (as well as GNOME) don't want to coexist on my PC even when I put them on seperate drives. This is partly a windows problem, but linux is at fault too. I admit that most people don't need this capability, but it shouldn't be so hard for the average user to do. Does Doom 3 run under GNOME?

  10. Not betamax on MGM Purchase Gives Sony An Edge In Disc Format War · · Score: 3, Interesting

Sony is in a much better position now than they were during the beta/VHS wars. They lost that one because they were much smaller and alone. They now have allies, the playstation is around and Sony owns more music and movies than they did. People are now are used to multiformat players and recorders. I think the trend will continue. Remember beta was a different size and shape, we are dealing with basically the same media with a different format. That being said, I agree that some of these monopolistic trends are bad for the industry. I wonder what format Microsoft will choose for the Xbox 2.

  11. The problem is development is geared to IE on Firefox Browser On An Upward Trend · · Score: 0

All those popups, activex, javascript etc which take advantage of the lack of security don't work on mozilla unless you turn all the security features off. Most shops don't even test against Netscape anymore just IE.

This could be the only way they could get it.

  14. Lazy programmers produce bugs on Mountain Biking Helps Squash Bugs · · Score: -1, Troll

I am tired of the C language bashing. If a programmer is diligent in coding and tests the code thoroughly, then there are fewer bugs. "A poor workman blames his tools." Programming in C is not for sissies. The problem is the same fool can really screw up a C program but only moderately mess up a java program. Lesson: Have the fools program in java.

  15. The new colonial powers? on China: the New Advanced Technology Research Hotbed · · Score: 1

Will the major corporations begin carving out territory now like the major governments did at the turn of the 20th century? We used Chinese labor to build our railroads and dig our mines, the only difference here is we are treating the workers slightly better. Many of these projects are not taking jobs away from Americans and will benefit the Chinese in the long run. I'm sure they'll do a good job. Wasn't one of the first UNIX programs "fortune"?

  16. One million is a pretty small investment on Speech Recognition in Silicon · · Score: 1

The social, commercial and political usefulness of this technology is worth billions. Will this lead to be the end of word processing by keyboard? Dr. Evil: "Here's the plan. We get the warhead, and we hold the world ransomed for.....One MILLION DOLLARS!!" No.2: "Ahem...Well, don't you think we should maybe ask for *more* than a million dollars? A million dollars isn't exactly a lot of money these days. Virtucon alone makes over nine billion dollars a year!"

  20. Pong Symphony in blip minor on Kong in Concert - Donkey Kong Country Arrangements · · Score: 1

Am I the only one who finds all these repetitive midi tracks annoying? Has anyone ever gotten a Grammy for a videogame soundtrack? Well I must admit most of them are better than the Britany Spears and clones music.

  21. Someone's bound to say; "The death of AIX!" on Linux-only POWER5 server From IBM · · Score: 1

Unfortunately, AIX has too many proprietary IBM extensions we don't want in Linux. More importantly, can it run DB2 or WSAD? Of course, it would be nice to hook it up to an iPod.
