Though the fraud claim will probably lead to slashdot getting sued, Germany http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/Top_News/2007/12/08/scientology_facing_ban_in_germany/5643/ and several other countries have taken steps to limit scientology within their borders. While many might seek to compare this to the actions of many Islamist states, scientology's claims often involve situations that fall under racketeering laws not aspects of religious freedom.
"freedomfries" is an interesting replacement for "f-the french," though I must say I didn't know that slashdot was really concerned about communications decency.
As many have noted, this test only looked at the outside in unstressed occasions. It also fails to look at neurotransmitter levels--which I think they would have wanted to evaluate in an effort, at least, to gain more funding.
There's nothing more annoying than trying to read a novel while pressing a button each time one has read 5 or 10 lines of text.
I can think of plenty of things more annoying, like not having the book on me in the first place, having to deal with slow refresh, carrying multiple devices, etc....
There's a reason books come in standardized sizes.
Yes, like paper handling, binding, and paper waste. A 3" diagonal book with 2000 pages is not practical. A 3" diagonal e-book with 2000 pages is.
Reading speed and comprehension is affected by the size of the reading sample in actual space not simply the size of the document. Reading on the Sony Reader is faster with greater comprehension possible than for the same text with the same person on an ipod touch / pda screen.

I have had the same problem with quicktime (any.mov file, but the worst are the drm'ed music videos from itunes--yes, yes, they are all available via video.google, but the quality is usually poor for what I want to find).
The solutions provided typically fall into
1) Don't use Vista (which for those us of who have apparently lost our minds and gone for it is worthless)
2) Don't use quicktime (again, worthless for those of us with ipods)
3) Use Quicktime alternative (the first somewhat helpful entry, but unfortunately doesn't work for my computer and a host of others)
4) Use a newer version of Itunes (see entry 3)
5) Use an external hard drive (haven't tried this yet, but it seems to be getting really good results--this seems to be tied to the SCSI driver issue, and the hard drive on my laptop falls in this category)
6) Wait several months for a solution (not too helpful, but hopefully will provide a long term solution that allows me to travel without an external hard drive).
If liquids are able to hold a coherent shape for lengthy periods (as the shape on Saturn would seem to indicate), then if the mechanism for creating them could be understood better, could they not be used for inefficient but decorative data storage?
The lieutenant governor's comment about the senator's proposal being difficult to enforce is a decided understatement.
The state of Georgia is purporting to fine a website (if the bill becomes law and there is lack of compliance) who has its servers somewhere besides Georgia (and is also operating out of Cali). Even if they were in Georgia it would be a difficult law to enforce because of the interstate nature of websites. If Georgia wants such a restriction to be effective, it needs to get its national representatives to propose legislation.
As someone who grades graduate level research papers, I've had to make comments on wikipedia citations before. Students who do cite wikipedia get a book from me in the margins. It is, as noted above, completely inappropriate to use any encyclopedia for reference. It isn't amazing to me that the school has made a statement against use of wikipedia but it is continually shocking that any student (including the one's I've graded) actually continues to use it.
In most cultures, the universe is a male figure and the earth female. The two have intercourse of a sort and the visible comes into existence

Which, given Charles V's original home and upbringing, the horse and God seem to win out.

Lie detectors can be used in investigations but not in trials. There's a real, significant difference there.

The issue is repeatedly noted in the Apple forums on quicktime/itunes but nothing seems to have been done. A slightly more helpful forum discussion is found at http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6035_102-0.html?forum

You never know but what they might--he is Sir William Gates III already, and with all the mess the current royal family gets into from time to time...

The submarines base part of Bremerton Naval in Washington is blurred. The museum ships are not nor is most of the Hood Canal.
