You are making far too many assumptions with your argument.
A sufficiently sized bomb drilled into the middle of the asteroid would with ease break it up into smaller chunks.
A 'shaped charge' that exploits a weakness detected at farther away than we are currently able too, by magnitudes of order, are no help, realistically.
What we need to do, is fund advanced detection of these threats, if, and when, they are perceived by 'Joe Six-pack"; or make that happen...
I won't even bother with the rest of your assumptions, they are too ludicrous to even comment on, based on the first assumption.
Several of you have helpfully provided info and links to educate me on what 'Eco-Anarchists' were about.
I truly thank all of you for your desire and willingness to 'give a helping hand' to another. That's the main thing that attracted me to/. originally, and has kept me here.
*the other shoe drops* Most of this info I was aware of. I was merely, and only, pointing out the trend in labeling getting more oxymoronic lately. At least that's how I see it.
Kudos for an informative and potentially helpful comment, nicely worded, concise, and polite.:-)
Well, since you shined the light on it from that direction, my protest seems to appear smaller!
But I will still argue that the 'Eco-Anarchists' are imposing their own order on the system, thus decreasing the level of anarchy on the system. Yeah, it's weak, but I'm hardheaded!:-)
Really, that's an interesting comment you made. Thanks...that kind of thing helps keep the mind open and flexible.

Obviously, they slept/texted through biology class. Harmony with nature? HAHAHAHAHA![1] Kill or be killed. Survival of the fittest. Earthquakes. Floods. Hurricanes. Tornadoes. Tsunami. Competition among/against species for survival....etc. Mankind has fought 'nature' for survival for eons. Nature is not empathic, sympathetic, nor caring...it just IS.

They are ignorant nutjobs, the lot of them, IMO.
[1] I do think we have a responsibility to minimize negative impact and conserve our environment, but with intelligence and knowledge to make our world a better place for everyone.
Most people are comfortable with self-deception, in fact, they will embrace it tightly. It helps them happily maintain their biased, prejudiced, and ignorant attitudes and beliefs....all the better to fit in with their preferred social groups.
This is how marketing works so well.....
What I want to know is how people deal with the cognitive dissonance of their (presumed) conviction that they're doing good, in the context of the methods that they're employing?
If that was a rhetorical question posed as a set-up for expressing your dismay, ignore my comment.:-)
Is it just me that finds the 'label' Eco-Anarchist' to be as blatant of an oxymoron as 'politically correct', 'Patriot Act', and 'military intelligence'?
I guess 'weasel wording' is the new trend....:-(
Eco-Anarchist......Hmmm...anarchy to the ecosystem?!?!?...does not make sense in the context of their stated goals.
The 1%, or 0.001% you mention.... IMHO, if that 1% turns out to be safer than the tens of thousands of fatalities every year due to human error we have now, your objections are silly. (not even taking into account all of the other non-fatal traffic accidents that snarl traffic, damage property, and cause injuries we currently experience)
And the comparison to operating an automobile to an airplane?....WOW, what are you smoking?
I would speculate that if getting a pilot license was as trivial as getting a drivers license, you would see a dramatic increase in deaths, crashes, and property damage across the board compared to current automobiles.
Remember: gravity is a stone cold killer bitch...if your engine dies, you can't pull over to the side of your flight path and wait for a tow-plane.
Don't get me wrong, I'm one of those that like to be fully in control of my own car. I avoided automatic transmissions until around 1997-8, because I did not want 'my car deciding for me when to shift'!
I agree that the texter is not responsible for the accident, but the initial ruling:'the slap on the wrist' that the textee got, well, IMHO, $775.00 USD is way too small compensation for two innocent victims, both of which had to undergo leg amputations as a result of textee's 'distracted driving'.
And there were dinosaurs roaming the earth and I had to walk to school barefoot, through the snow, uphill both ways.
Your generation was lucky, Gramps.... You should have stuck around to the Extinction Event(tm). There were no dinosaurs, but dodging asteroids while walking to school barefoot, through snow and across blast fronts and stumbling through scorched impact craters, while going uphill both ways was a real treat! Nevermind the wooly mammoth stampedes, and sabre tooth tigers trying to steal your lunch, packs of Dire Wolves yapping at you on every corner....
But, I digress....*takes double shot of Geritol* AHHH! Oh, and to parent poster, 'Compaqt': Get off my lawn! Just mind the craters, whippersnapper.;-);-);-)
On a serious note, I think the subject could be studied further to our eventual benefit as a species. Where I'm headed with this: I know of stressful times from my family and older acquaintances remembering their lives, backed by history records/texts, there seems to be a significant difference in longevity between those that survived intense, acute stressors, and those that survived medium, chronic stressors[1]. The acute stressor bunch seems to live long lives, while the chronic stressor bunch seems to die sooner.
It could be I am just not knowledgeable enough in this field to know that this has been done?

Perfect excuse to develop and deploy Orion Drives, IMHO.
I've been curious...
The problem has been detecting it in time.
This may set a record for the national average, but it has been cooler and milder than last summer here in Oklahoma.
Our avg. July temp. is 91-94 F, but the past 3 or so summers it has been 7-10+F over avg.
Here is an example :this July.
And here is Aug. this year(so far...note the diff between avg. and observed)
Glad to share! ;-)
(The End?)
Well, I hope there aren't as many sequels and edits in this saga......
Is it going to be light on the pocket book too when it comes out?
No.
It will create a black hole in your wallet that won't stop until you have lost your ass.
It's just simple consumerism, but you were mistaken that you are the consumer, instead of the consumed....
I forget. What is this "Olympics" thing? :>
A modern day marketdroid jackpot of ad revenue generation.
Nothing worthwhile or meaningful for the masses....
How does a person get off of this insane ride?
I think they need to change their name from ICANN to ICANNOT, ASAP!
It was popular in the 1970's, you can go to the doctor and get the cure.... ;-)

self-deception was never my strong suit
I think therein lies the answer to your question.

Ahh...that was not mentioned in TFA.
The few bits they did give out was the $775 fine and 50 hours community service.
I would have linked to both rulings if I had submitted this one. :-)
Thanks for the update/correction!

Well said, indeed.
Your method suggests that extreme accuracy is required.

*I'm still waiting for the first perfect day, you insensitive clod!*
You managed to incite me to trashing /. mod rules, and take out my rage on you via mod points...then I read this comment....Hmmmm...
Having dealt with those very issues you described, your comment invoked the disgust I felt at the time.
So, I replied instead.
Prior to this post of yours, the only thought that I had was, 'No fanatic like a new convert.'
My advice would be to back off your certainty a bit, and convert that energy to more research/learning before you "Ride, boldly ride!"
I think you may have had a few holes in your argument early on.
BTW, I somewhat agree with some of what you say, but not all of it. :-)
Now there may be dire consequences to shark-jumping TV shows!
Meh, who am I kidding.....
That of course assumes that you could fit a distillery into the boat.
Most of the US Navy ships and subs that are nuclear powered dump excess distilled water overboard.
I think they could easily come up with a smaller, simpler distillery than a nuclear reactor to address that part of your comment. :-)
Besides, knowing sailors, I imagine there have been occasional 'field-improvised' distilleries on ships for many decades/centuries. ;-)
I know we did not consider this news either

segway, moped, motorbike, motor-trike, smart car, mini, small car, car, family car, SUV, minivan, Bentley, van, mini-bus, bus, truck, one-tonner, 18 wheeler ?
Hey!!!
Where does a station wagon fit in there?
