This is news how?[...] The only thing newsworthy I got from this is that the RIAA is just slightly more petty than I thought.[...] The thing people need to get over, and real quick, is the thought that the second they see anywhere in media the acronym RIAA, that they need to immediately post it on Slashdot.[...] What we need, to effectively fight back against their idiocy, is SUPPORTERS. [my emphasis] [...] Those are the things we need to do, or maybe even get some of us geeks to inundate media with easily comprehended information that average Joe blow can read and care about, and help spread the word to the masses about their evils. Find a way to make the average citizen give a crap about this issue, and you've found a way to get some money and influence behind this issue on a side that is NOT the RIAA. But until then, we'll always be a flea, biting the back of the Mammoth that is Industrialized politics at work.
So, I feel you are saying: "We are preaching to the choir, and will never get anywhere" If I have misunderstood, then correct me...I can take it, and welcome it, in fact.
Working on the above perspective, I have to reply to counter argue.
I will use myself as an example. I lurked here for several years before getting an account. Why? I learned stuff that was new to me, but was dismissed as 'old news' by those with your attitude. Those comments still came through, in spite of those like you. I found interesting things to explore and learn about, and still do here on slashdot...every day!
I found out about GNU/Linux on slashdot, despite you, and the fact it existed before I was aware that it was news.
There is benefit to 'preaching to the choir', as the choir grows, and talks to others.
I've learned about many things that I had no previous clue that they existed from the 'preaching to the choir' bunch here on slashdot.
Again, if I have misunderstood, please accept my apology, and correct me. If my assumption was correct, or close, then think about what I said, and have some patience...we were all n00bs at one point....there will always be n00bs, and the future is full of n00bs...in reference to anything.
So saying that the FSF has an "open and virulent bias against copyrights" clearly demonstrates either a lack of research, a lack of understanding, or a lack of honesty on the part of the RIAA's lawyers.
That may well become the 'classic understatement of the year'...it is a strong contender...win, lose, or draw.

No, rattlesnake does NOT taste like chicken!
It tastes like snake. Most snakes taste similar, but not really like chicken. It tastes more like turtle/tortoise than chicken.
I think that idea comes from confusing texture and appearance with taste. Cooked snake is very much like cooked chicken breast in texture and appearance, but not in taste.
If you ever want to try snake for yourself, after 'dressing'* the snake, you need to parboil it. A layer of oil will form in the pot. Yes, this is truly 'snake oil'! Discard the water/snake oil batch, rinse the parboiled snake with fresh water. You do not want any of the snake oil! It is very bitter and strong tasting! Not pleasant at all.**
Now cook the snake in your favorite manner. One of my favorites is to make a marinade by simmering some diced celery and onions in orange juice for about 10 minutes, let that cool, pour into a roasting pan/dish, add parboiled snake, cover the pan/dish, and roast at 300 F until done.(judge 'doneness' exactly like you would chicken breast) Enjoy!
Here is where the 'tastes like chicken' part comes in...It will look and feel just like cooked chicken breast. It will feel the same while chewing on it. The 'palatability' will make your mind try to convince you it is chicken, but your taste buds will insist that it is different from chicken. It is a pretty safe bet that if you like chicken breast, you have a better than 50% chance of liking snake.
That recipe also works great for chicken and pork chops!

I'm green with envy.(pun not intended-I'm 'out to pasture now') Thiss could be a very cool thing for field commanders if used/implemented right.
It's getting pretty comical, watching Linux zealots cling onto the idea that Ubuntu is anywhere near production quality (for the desktop), let alone better than XP/Vista.
Well, I can't speak about Vista, qon't touch it with a ten foot pole.
XP better than Ubuntu? Only in your dreams. I have recent experience with both on the same PC, and XP was so good, I repartitioned the HDD after 3 months dual booting XP Pro SP3 and Kubuntu 8.04, to a Kubuntu 9.04 beta only PC.
XP took 8.5 hours to install, update, and install enough software to be usable for school, office, and home. (with three BSOD's trying to update SP3) Kubuntu took me 1.5 hours to get the equivalent functional PC.
Counting from when I selected which OS to boot into: XP took 2 minutes, 10-25 seconds to be usable enough to open Firefox and be on slashdot. Kubuntu, from that saame point, I was reading slashdot in 55-65 seconds. Period.
Oh, and XP did not have drivers for my NIC, so no network/internet. The NIC was a Microsoft branded product, had to dig out the disk and use the NT 4 drivers...buggy, but enough to get online for updated drivers. Kubuntu recognised the NIC, installed working drivers, configured the card, and I had instant network and internet access.
There is now comparison, XP was left behind long ago. Some friends that dual boot Vista/Kubuntu, they only use Vista for a few games, only because it came preinstalled, so why not. Most of their time is spent in *nix land.
And maybe, just maybe, to recognize that Microsoft has a point here.
Yes, they do. They can't compete on cost, only on their falling marketshare and OEM shady dealings. That's their point.
You can keep up your clueless ranting, but it's only making you look more foolish to those of us that actually use and enjoy *nix. Personally, I could not care less what you use. Doesn't affect me at all on any level that matters to me.
This has exactly matched my experiences and observations while working tech support professionally, and for friends and family.
This type of user is far more widespread than any other type.
Consequently they have been easy to retrain to use *nix. Those conversions have went really smooth, and the users are happy.
It's the 'self proclaimed Windows Power User' that kicks, screams, whines, and argues '*nix is too hard...it will cost a fortune to retrain!' I've seen it time and time again.
I'm a power-user...
Almost every time I hear this, I have to chuckle.
I use the command-line for anything requiring *real* using of my computer. You can't beat command-lines with piping and scripting for *real* power-use, period.
That statement kept me from chuckling. I now have to agree with your first sentence.
The difference between being stuck in a GUI and very limited CLI (Windows 9x and XP Pro), then Using a *nix distro with real CLI support is truly amazing.
The fact that MS uses the phrase 'multi-tasking' and "MS OS' in the same sentence is both misleading, and laughable.
And I am far from being what I would call a 'power-user' with *nix, but easily qualify with Windows.

The only 'tweaking' I had to do was add the 'center' and 'surround/rear speaker' channels in the volume mixer to get 5.1 sound. It defaulted to 2.1 on install.
Previously, I used 'ALSA', but that did not seem to be an easy or obvious choice this time, but so far no problems with 'Pulse Audio' and my S.B. Audigy soundcard.

None of that matters...we are foresworn to our Constitution. and what it stands for, that is what we took our oath for/on...aand base our Honour on/Duty on.
I will even(gleefully) stand armed-guard over you as you burn the USA flag in honest-felt protest. (while secretly wanting to head-shot you, and tea-bag your corpse...happily!)
None of it matters, we will perform our duty with honor in spite of you, so be comforted, or not. We will live up to our duty and honour, if politics stay out of the picture.**
**disclaimer: I was raised by my English/U.K. Great-Grandmother, and still spell some things as a U.K. Citizen would...get over it- it's still the English language, you wankers!
iTouch+interface with Predator/Avenger UAV's control brings whole new meaning to 'reach out and touch someone'!
I hope the US Military is running their own 'Appstore' for this!
"Congrat.'s, Commander! For winning the last field exercise, Code name: 'Operation E-bay Amphibious Assault', your Unit/Command has been with credited 10(ten) Credits, which can be used on MilAppStore.gov.mil."
Some of you will take this as sarcasm, or sarcastic hubris. It is meant as neither one.
This would be a cool, efficient, and useful tool for those having to make their decisions while sitting in the hot seat, and I back this 100% from that context/perspective![been there, done that, have the 'salad' for my Mess Dress, and wore out the t-shirt)
I'm green with envy.(pun not intended-I'm 'out to pasture now') Thiss could be a very cool thing for field commanders if used/implemented right.
Anyplace I am surrounded by gorgeous strippers and hookers, and good booze; that is my 'Happy Coding Place'!
Obviously my coding projects take a long time, a lot of energy, and stamina though, what with all the QA, T&A, penetration testing, etc...
*alarm clock sounds off*
Damn! Back to coding in my 'not so happy place'.
Your post, as is the 'Chewbacca Defense', I reocgnize as Primarily the English laanguage, but...*head s splodes!*
LOL!
It reminds me of Homer Simpson trying to pass himself off as a 'Rhodes Scholar'.
My Grandfather always defined a mess as "Trying to put 10 gallons of shit in a 5 gallon bucket."
You actually seemed to pull that off without the mess!
(with three BSOD's trying to update SP3)
Kubuntu took me 1.5 hours to get the equivalent functional PC.
Counting from when I selected which OS to boot into:
XP took 2 minutes, 10-25 seconds to be usable enough to open Firefox and be on slashdot.
Wish I had some +++mod love for you!
This has exactly matched my experiences and observations while working tech support professionally, and for friends and family.
This type of user is far more widespread than any other type.
Consequently they have been easy to retrain to use *nix. Those conversions have went really smooth, and the users are happy.
It's the 'self proclaimed Windows Power User' that kicks, screams, whines, and argues '*nix is too hard...it will cost a fortune to retrain!'
I've seen it time and time again.
Yeah, it is easy:
