    Well, it may not be as funny as the video of Steve Ballmer offing Billy G. with an airborne chair while shouting "Developers! Developers! Developers!" and doing the MonkeyDance...then Darth Vader cutting Stevie the MonkeyBoy down with a light saber, but I am still camped out near Redmond trying to catch that video on my cellphone/vid camera!

    I'm hoping to have this footage before Duke Nukem Forever comes out!!..I've been waiting for this (and that) for a looooong time!

    BTW:
    I have placed in the Top Ten the last seven years, with five of those seven in the top five, and have placed first the past two years in the "Wiley Coyote Perseverance and Dedication to the Mission Award" standings.
    I am now allowed to enter the Wiley Coyote Souper Genius competition, and I have high hopes of success. *snicker* (afterall, I do have an inside contact at Acme!!!)

    Look at the numbers of botnets, the amount of SPAM, the need for a multitude of Anti-virus/Anti-Malware software to run on (windows) most PC's. The average Joe Sixpack/office drone is a factor in this equation.

    Most people just do not give a rat's ass unless it bites them in their ass. Until the unwashed masses give a shit, it will be a variation of the same old shit.

    I agree with you, but I have to ask: How the fsck did the likes of B. Spears and P. Hilton get so well known/newsworthy? WTF?

    Point is, history has many good observations about the enthusiasm of college students for a cause.

    Wow, if there was some way to harness the energy of 'students campaigning a cause', then most of the world's energy problems would be solved...but it could slow down our planet's orbital velocity so we fall into the sun....Hmmm...

    You are overlooking something here. Just as a really cool computer project will help grad students with CS degrees on their l33t skilz for their 'real world:I have done this shit for real' additions to their resume....same here for these law students.

    I 'repair' a lot of private individuals, ans a few local small business PC's and networks. Not anything on the scale that you mentioned, but enough to know that you are 100% correct.

    In this case (installing a DVD burner), I would still have my USB drive with various tools I often need or use on my client's PC's. (almost all are Windows OS. most of my follow-up requests from my Linux people are in the FAQ's type category) I will usually offer to do a cheap 'tune-up' (make sure they have updates to Windows, AV,anti malware, etc., check running services, start-up app's, run virus and malware scans), and most will go for it. I usually just copy the install file needed to the desktop, then run from there, so most of the time I would have ready files on the desktop (with known file size) to test the burner. Then I would delete the install file from the desktop.

    Besides, it just makes more sense to me to use known files to test the dvd...I can compare the dvd with my known files to verify, and also test other subsystems of the PC at the same time.

    Yes, a total lack of professionalism here. Too bad that only the client will end up getting reamed in this case.

    You must be a Yankee. Around here, it is more likely to be a "red" person than a "black" person as you stated.

    Most of the "black" people you speak of arrived after the "white" folks were tangling with the "red" folks, so the "black" folks were more acceptable to the "white" folks than the "red" folks were.

    *sigh* I await the day when all of this crap is vague history, like the caveman era is to us. It will not happen in my lifetime, but I can see it happening someday.

    I don't know that I really expressed myself well above. The last part seemed too cavalier for what I intended.

    I don't try too much to pay attention to the mod's to my replies, as it doesn't seem to make much difference to my Karma. Perhaps I inadvertently balance the good, the bad, and the fuggly in my replies after reaching the "Excellent Karma" rating I have. Sometimes I can be rather an asshat- especially when I've been drinking. (which is frequent- I like to relax with some good beer after getting off work at 2300 hrs.--if you doubt this, just enter my user name and "slashdot" in Google search!- and yes, I am most of my way through a sixpack of Guinness Extra Stout right this moment)

    As far as Ray Beckerman (NewYorkCountryLawer) goes, I meant every word I typed. I have made him one of my (few) /. 'friends' for several reasons:
    1. As a 'friend', his posts are "+" rated so that I can see them at my current settings. He always has something to say that is worth listening to whether you agree with him or not.
    2. I admire and respect his work on our behalf. (not just the /. crowd, but media lovers everywhere) and envy his saeemingly superpower energy to juggle all the things he is doing! He even takes the time to keep us here up to date, and gives us his insider type insight without crossing the line of trying to lawyer or preach to us.
    3. He backs his play in real life- 'puts his money where his mouth is'. Yes, I'm sure he is a successful attorney in the usual parameters, but he is one of the few who 'dare go where eagles fear to tread'(bad paraphrase).

    BTW, I may have mentioned this before, but thanks for your efforts here, and for causing me to rethink my view on lawyers. (the subject line of this thread says it all-'re:Damn Lawyers') You are a gem.
    It's easy to lose sight of some of the good trees in the dark, creepy forest of our legal system nowadays.

    As a side note, I have decided to contribute my tax return $$'s to EFF and several similar ongoing efforts we all benefit from.
    I call on all /.'ers to make a small, similar effort. If we have the numbers and power to reduce servers to a molten ruin (the /. effect!), then there are enough of us to throw $5-10 bucks at the grunts on the front line- come on y'all, let's show the world the mighty power that is /.!!!

    Yeah, and think of all of the other benefits a refrigerator sized, one ton keychain memory device will bring about.

    1. Cut down on greenhouse gasses from cars- you can't drive them with the ignition switch wrenched out of the steering column.
    2. If they reinforce cars to cure #1, then it will cut down on reckless and overly aggressive driving. I mean imagine that drive swinging around on the keychain and slapping you in the nuts!
