  1. Re:Ethnically segregated? on French Riots Lead to Crackdown on Blogs · · Score: 2, Informative

I was not aware that had changed in France.
Since it happened to my mother who was born in 1946, it has changed a very long time ago!

But can someone of color ever really be "French"?
or American? (yep, mod me flamebait)

  2. my 2 euro cents on French Riots Lead to Crackdown on Blogs · · Score: 5, Insightful

Since I live in Paris and I used to live in one of those poor suburbs, my humble opinion might be worth more than 2 cents, so here it comes:
    1. There is no country in Europe that does not struggle with immigrants and children from immigrants from African origin. France has the largest number of them, hence the biggest problems. (This is also correlated to the anti-semitism problem in France: the largest arabic and the largest jewish populations of Europe are in France and anti semitism in France comes overwhelmingly from this arabic population)
    2. Many of those rioters are simply criminals that do not want the police to be present in these suburbs and are demonstrating that it is their territory.
    3. Islam has nothing to do with these rioters. If they were white, would we say it's because of christianity? These criminals are not muslim.
    4. These bloggers were calling for physically hurting policemen, burning cars, schools, ... They were not just discussing the problems.
    5. What is this bullshit about journalists not talking about the causes of the social problems? All French newspapers, TV and radio news are just talking about that!
    6. These riots happen almost exclusively in the poor suburbs of France, 99% of the French population has only seen burning cars on TV.

Your comment about nationality is totally wrong. In most of the EU, being born in one country gives you automatically the nationality of this country (this is not the case for Germany, though). It is certainly the case for France even if both parents are not French.

voIP in an office document? That's pretty pointless, or am I missing something?
You can put images in any modern format. Video or audio can at least be linked to from a document, the rest can be put as an image.
Obviously owning a software suite and deciding on the format to use give you a big advantage over those who want to conform to standards that take time to write and to agree upon.
But companies or governments that rely on ONE company and closed formats for their documents are crazy. What if they want to read these documents in 10, 20 years from now? What if MS decides to stop supporting these formats?
I mean, it's crazy to think that MS does not have the means to create (at the very least) office viewers for other platforms than Windows! It's a choice, a commercial and strategic choice to lock you on their platform.

Making stuff is the big deal. Most chemicals are made from petrol nowadays and the chemical companies are searching for a way out of this dependency on petrol. One way is plants (as raw material) + bacteria(for their enzymatic reactions). Quite a few microbiology labs are now working in discovery, selection and bio-engeneering of bacteria for this very purpose. Personally, I think the discovery part is very important since we know close to nothing about the biodiversity of bacteria. A number I heard recently is that 70% of the biomass of this planet is made of bacteria, and most of them live in the ground and are very difficult to isolate and study and thus mostly unknown. Look up metagenomic in google for more info.

Every country has something to lose.
The universal access tax scares me. You don't need a tinfoil hat to see why a worldwide tax is a bad idea and an awful precedent.
Don't you pay now to get an internet address? What's the difference with a tax?
The internet has become a security issue- Aside from all the defense networks etc, we need to be able to keep tabs on extremist groups on the web, note that there is a widely circulating how to video about how to cause the most damage with a b#mb on a bus.
Somehow I expected the terrorist issue to be raised! It's irrelevent to the subject of ICANN
As popular as "America is an Imperialist" sentiment has become, we still believe in freedom of speech. What happens when China decides that no one should use the word democracy? What happens when France decides that the word Nazi can't be used
What has this got to do with domain names?
    Just some thoughts.

Reading the FAQ gives plenty of reasons not to use this service:
    - No ipod support: No, unfortunately Peer Impact(TM) does not support iPod technology at this time.
    - Songs format: Songs purchased in Peer Impact(TM) are provided in Windows Media Application format (WMA) and are protected via Microsoft DRM.
    - Firewall: If your PC is protected by a firewall, you can still act as a source of content to other users and earn Peer Cash. However, PCs seen as firewalls can only act as a source to non-firewalled users, never to other firewalled PCs. Therefore, to MAXIMIZE YOUR EARNING POTENTIAL, you should really make an effort to open your firewall.
