Ferrer's Web site began selling software in 2002 and was shut down by the FBI in October 2005, authorities said. Prosecutors said the illegal sales cost the software companies as much as $20 million, but industry officials say the amount could be higher.

How exactly were these numbers computed?? This is all going back to the dead horse "but people wouldn't have bought the package if it was too expensive" argument; figuring the losses as each unit sold being a loss is absurd.

    From this article:

In order for such a revolutionary technology to have the public support needed for it to become used widely, McCarthy says that confirmation from the academic community will be crucial. "That is our focus at this point," he said.

McCarthy declined to specify how many prototypes they have built, or how long they have run, how much power they produce, and other details of the design.

All of this documentation will be presented in full to the jury of twelve scientists that are soon to be selected to analyze the technology. As of the time of this writing, 1,300 people have expressed interest in serving on the jury of scientists; and 15,516 people have signed up to be notified of the results.

The selection of the jury will screen out anyone who has past involvement or other indications that might be construed as showing support of the technology in some form or other. "We want cynics," said McCarthy.

"We are not seeking validation from the court of public opinion. What we need is validation from the academic world," he said. Once that has been achieved, then the public can know.

It really sounds to me like they want outside verification, and are willing to pay for it themselves. Shouldn't we let that take place before we fry them in oil?

Ahh, I hadn't noticed the niceness value. One thing I can say is MS Windows under vmware seems to run better on funky hardware, since vmware presents a pretty standard set of interfaces that MS Windows can talk to, and then lets Linux talk to the funky hardware. You raised good points though.

  16. Re:No 3D on Experiences with Replacing Desktops w/ VMs? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I have had the same experiences (running windows 2k on a linux machine using vmware); works like a charm, running things like photoshop and illustrator without a single problem (the newest versions no less). The key is to make sure you have enough memory on the host machine (at least 1GB, more if you can get it). As an added bonus I now get to treat Microsoft Windows like just another (bloated) app running on linux :-) And since this MS machine never connects to the net, I don't need extra apps (like virus scanners) wasting cpu cycles/memory. And if the virtual machine ever does get hosed up for whatever reason, I am ten minutes away from a restore and running with everything installed and ready to go. Oh and the 2k virtual machine talks to an attached USB scanner (windows drivers only) just fine, even though linux can't, which is an added bonus.

True; my random guess is if they were classified (and most likely they have been; I am too lazy to look) they would be considered a seperate species of ape (as opposed to a gorilla, chimpanzee, orangutan, or human). When people scream, "they say people descended from apes!" they are usually referring to a modern day primate. What I wanted to point out is that we are NOT descended from any (currently existing) primate or ape, which is what a suprisingly large number of people (both pro and anti evolution) believe. Luckily if you don't believe in evolution, you would probably think the classification process is bogus as well :-)
