    Because the guy screwed up and tried to make excuses. At his position Linus does not have to put with childish behavior from his staff, he can choose who works with him.

    So just let the guy go. Why hang the body from a bridge?

    I wish my boss would show the same concern for the quality of our software, and scream at the programmers that break it every day. Unfortunately it doesn't happen...

    Sure, it does happen. I have fired programmers who could not do their job. The firing was done in my office with the door closed. I did not post news of the firing on the internal company forums. I did not drag the body through the streets as an example.

    Unless that developer is disposable and you'd like to send a message aux les autres.

    If you want to send a message to others, then just take the guy off the project. If the other developers are worth their salt, they will already know the guy is incompetent. There's no need for a public flogging.

    Because it is a publicly managed project, the yelling happens in public.

    If you want drama and a soap opera, then yes that is how to do it. Do it publicly, make every conflict a drama. Go for the ratings. Maybe that is how Linus keep people interested in following Linux. But, is it the best way?

    Each of Microsoft, Apple, and the Linux Kernel are examples of organizations with leaders at their helm that demonstrate the above capabilities.

    Please show me examples of Apple's CEO or Microsoft's CEO reaming someone a new asshole on a mailing list. I've not seen one such example. So why are you trying to use Apple and Microsoft to justify Linus' incredibly poor management style?

    Seriously... that is an example of the absolutely worst management style I've ever seen. If you have a problem with someone's work, tell him/her so privately. To ream someone a new asshole, as Linus did, on a mailing list is beyond the pale.

    I don't find it sad, other than it's sad that some public companies are run by people who don't understand their responsibilities to the public.

    The comment in question was made by the Netflix CEO on his public Facebook page, which has 200,000 followers. The SEC is investigating because it may be unfair disclosure of material information.

    What I do not understand is how can disclosure on a public Facebook page with 200,000 followers be considered "unfair disclosure," while disclosing similar information to a dozen or so financial analysts in a private analyst meeting is considered to be "fair disclosure."

    I'd rather the White House not give them $250M in taxpayer money in the first place.

    Government grants like that result in successful companies about 90% of the time, while private equity funding results successful companies less than 60% of the time. It looks like the government is better at finding companies to fund (and jobs to create) than private equity is.

    I understand the meaning quite well, especially as it is used within the context of what I quoted.

    I can personally experience a month when the global temperature is high. Indeed, I have experienced a month when the global temperature is high. I am not saying that I've traveled the globe experiencing all the temperatures around the world.

    Reading comprehension, you should try it sometime.

    If you had read my entire post, you would have seen this part which is the lead up to the sentence you selectively quote out of context:

This is 0.63C (1.13F) above the 20th century average and ties with 2008 as the fifth warmest October on record. The record warmest October occurred in 2003 and the record coldest October occurred in 1912. This is the 332nd consecutive month with an above-average temperature.

    It clearly talks about global average temperatures, a singular average temperature average across land and ocean surfaces

    However, if you prefer to ignore great swaths of text so that you can feel good about yourself, feel free to continue to parade your ignorance.

    December 1990 was one of the coldest months since records were first kept in the Silver State more than a century ago.

    If you had read and understood what the article stated, the temperature being talked about was the global average temperature, not the temperature of your local area.
