XFree86 is the X Server.. it has nothing to with the interface, except just keeping it on your screen in form of a windowmanager, like Afterstep, Windowmaker, KDE and loads more..
Since alot of them has computer experience since "alot" of years.. But, they just dont, since they don't need it. I guess we really should get some good gui's running soon:)
The only things I know of with a firewire interface is digital cameras and some storage solutions.. I guess there are no Linux drivers for the utilities, even if the kernel supports firewire..
The release was sent out in a hurry, we 24/7 EFnet #distributed ppl got to know about it the same time as slashdot did, so the d.net website havent even been updated yet.
Acctually, using a $, for rootprompt can be a good thing, at least for security reasons.. If you are editing some config, and have to leave the room to get a pot or two of coffee, you can leave the box logged in as root, as it's not obvious to passing kiddies that you are root. Of course, this is for the lazy, but it gives slightly more security than a big "I AM LOGGED IN AS ROOT #" all over the screen.
Why bother with old technlogy, you won't go many ms under 100 whatever you do. why not focus on getting broadband to the public instead, I got my switched ethernet connection a couple of months ago, and I havent seen >5ms since.
twice, acctually... as my system doesnt do anything critical, logs are the only thing that suffers from a full / , of course, I could just setup a logd on one of my macs or so.. but I don't have a need for that.
I'm still on 2.2.10, compiled around 150 days ago (had a powersupply mishap:/) otherwise running stable, some ppl tell me about problems with.10, but nothing for me.
Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity Mounted on /dev/hda1 39M 35M 1.2M 97% / /dev/hda2 136M 91M 38M 70%/usr
hmm... haha. no space for the 2.2.14 source anyway;)
Ack, I acctually see the snow as a Y2k bug:P Swedish winters just suck, I had to ride my bike across town this morning, with a major hangover from the partying.. only problem I've had with Y2k so far:)
Yes, "Kristallklar" is swedish for "Crystal Clear"
/your average swedish guy.

(Afterstep 1.0 is my favourite btw)
Uuhmm..
:)
Pure XF86 would be nice to use
I hope you mean "insert your favourite windowmanager here".

I'll get OSX the first chance I get, of course..
but I really hope all the stupid windows-imitation animations and stuff can be turned off, I want a fast responsive system, no slow animated system.
Hepp.
Hell, I'm still on 2.2.10 on my old p100 server...
:P
I have no intentions on upgrading until something happens that forces me to..
Got over 120 days uptime and counting, not a single problem.
But... on my pIII box, I play around with all kinds of OS:es and things, so it will run the latest kernel as much as I can

still, going the right direction...
Shouldnt we get a freeze on this soon and move on? :)
;)
.40+ is starting to sound stupid
Just installed 2.2.14 on my pIII and I have no need for anything more, but still......... have to try
That's around 8Mbit/sec..
I use 8Mbit/sec for napster at home when I download the most damnit. : )
10Mbit switched ethernet... mmm.
Hmm, my pIII 450 overclocked to 600 runs at 65C, and my G3/350 (copper 750L) runs at 31C..
:P
How come Crusoe runs so hot compared to PPC?
I guess IBM still have an edge on the old-style static register cpu's anyway
As seen in http://n0cgi.distributed.net/cgi/dnet-finger.cgi?u ser=nugget, he was not on a team, and lives in the US.
very off-topic, but I'm swedish. :)
Just using a uk provider.

I got the news slighly quicker than slashdot posted it, not often that happens.. :)
Ah, well.. all puters are back to rc5 now
How legal could this watch be, as they even advertise it as "to get a camera past security"..
:)
I'll get one if they get to sweden of course

I just ordered a system with GeForce.. without checking linux compatabilies.. good for me then :)
The current MacOS X is DP2, Developers Preview 2, it's not beta, if even alpha. :)
And, browsing as root, well, don't.

In two towns, my own (Borlänge) and another one, Taxi cabs are equipped with this to control their speed and location.
Ack, I acctually see the snow as a Y2k bug :P :)

only problem I've had with Y2k so far
my puters date says "2000-01-01", as it should.
(or of course not connected to the internet at all)
no probs on any mac I've installed it on, no airport though...
Well, if the network is behind a firewall (which most Airport networks are), the patch isnt needed.
