It's been said before but I'll say it again...America is huge with a vast amount of its population spread through the interior of the country!! Urban sprawl has created huge geographic population centers. Its hard to say who is at blame for that but I can't just walk to the local grocer. It would take a good 45 minutes. My dad lives about 30 miles away from me on a lake. It's not the boonies but it is a good 5-10 mile drive to the nearest convenience store. The UK for example has 60 million people in an area roughly the size of Texas.
I challenge anyone to maintain 55mph (or 70mph for that matter) through Texas. The roads are so loooonnggg and straight and surrounded by nothing, 55 feels like you're crawling.
You are right about fuel efficiency to an extent. My car averages about 28mpg at 55-60mph. Cruising at 80mph gives me about 25mpg. Over enough distance they are pretty close in consumption however I reach my destination much much quicker. On a thousand mile trip it saves me almost 4 hours.
I have a 97 gti...try this...I may not have it quite right though.
With the key in or out of the ignition (don't turn it to ACC or ON) hit the AC button and turn your fans to full. Then pull your highbeams. Your fans will suddenly turn on. Found it on a forum years ago...was pretty funny the first time I tried it.
I think the big difference is we are loaned money under the assumption that we will pay it back at a later date, earning a profit for the lending country. A large part of the money the US hands out every year to the whole world are handouts with no plan for repayment.
You didn't think countries were giving us money for free did you???
IANAEconomist but I've done some reading on the military-industrial complex. It appears that most critics point to the opportunity cost of using government (and its inherent beuracracy) for research as opposed to private enterprise who have incentive to be efficient with their capital. From my untrained view it has the potential of creating too much centralised power as well. Collusion between contractors, congress, and the Pentagon is rampant I'm sure.
Purely anecdotal but I have Vista running on a 5 year old laptop. Runs just fine for what I use it for...internet and email. XP probably does the job a bit better but Vista will run just fine on old hardware. This was a Dell C610 1ghz 768mb of RAM.
I wouldn't put all my trust in a timing chain. VW in all their wisdom decided to stick their timing chain between the engine and trans on their 12 valve Vr6 engines (an awesome motor despite this glaring flaw). The tensioners and guides are failing at an early rate creating an expensive repair bill.
No, not practical for YOU or ANYONE ELSE WHO LIVES IN A BRICK HOUSE. Considering I've been using wireless for over 6 years now and can get access to my WAP from anywhere in my house including my neighbors house. So not practical for YOU does not equal not practical.
I applaud the fact that another leech has bitten the dust, and can no longer make an easy living selling the fruits of other people's works to noobs and lusers.
Interesting...I'm running Vista on a PIII 1ghz w/ 768mb of ram. Its "fast enough" for general computer usage. And what the heck are you doing with 15 applications running at the same time?
Actually, thanks for your original rebuttal. It happened to reminded me of the documentary I saw in the early 90's sometime about a New York City housing project. The city came in to tear down all the old "projects" and build everything new but neglected to ask the community (who were primarily out of jobs) if they would like to help rebuild their own neighborhood...and at the same time these people would be learning a trade. Long story short...
Because it was a public works project it had to be bid. Ends up the new buildings cost WAY too much and almost all of the old residents couldn't afford their home anymore and still primarily have no job skills. I see the same thing happening in Iraq. However in Iraq the US (and other countries to a lesser degree) taxpayers are footing the bill. It is stupid.
I sure hope you don't get hit by a beer truck. You're telling me that if something tragic happened to you then they would have no one to admin their system? How did they amass this "fortune" of IP if they are stupid enough to leave one person in charge of their critical infrastructure?
I agree with your comment by Adam Smith and I realize not all systems are perfect. I guess my point is...there is a huge culture of laziness in the inner cities. We have drug addicts who refuse to get clean because they make more money from selling their government funded methadone than they would by getting a job and staying clean. I do not place all the blame on the people however. I blame a system that hands out more money to women having babies but hires outside contractors to build new housing projects when there are thousands of capable, unemployed workers who would be happy to build their own new homes. The same thing is happening in Iraq. Rather than employ the people of the country to rebuild their OWN country, we're handing out jobs to American contractors.
Calling the welfare system socialist may have been a little extreme I just think we need more checks and balances within our current system.
You are correct. However I did not claim that "we" were more brave than the terrorists and I don't think it invalidates my point.
Unfortunately "bravery" alone would not be enought to topple any superpower. They will be martyred in their hometown or get some money for their families but that is about it.
People's fear in the US is an irrational fear that has been created by our own government...not by Al Qaida, unless that was their intention, in which case it worked. I'm more worried about crossing the street than some terrorist. The "War on Terror" (if you can call it that) is a fucking crock and I equate it to the movie "Wag the Dog".
They are like flies in my opinion because they will never destroy America by strapping bombs to their chest. Additionally you'll find that most people in the US AREN'T scared. Perhaps the media gives that spin...I don't know. Bottom line is its all fucked up and we have a handful of people pulling strings for the whole world.
No, not really. However, it seems that the system is highly susceptibale to abuse. I don't have a solution myself but the answer is not to keep giving these people money who can't seem to comprehend the proper use of birth control. The problem they were trying to point out was this is more widespread than you would think in some of the inner cities and in real terms some of these welfare families make more net income than an equal size middle class family. That is NOT right. This type of socialism causes a downward spiral in the inner cities due to the lack of drive required to raise a family. I am not willing to pay for other peoples fucking laziness and inability to keep their legs closed. Please excuse the language.
Meh...they are blinded by their faith, in the same way the religious zealots were bombing abortion clinics in the 90's. They believe in a utopian afterlife (even after killing innocent people) therefore courage is not part of the equation...not in the sense that you or I understand it at least. A majority of them are misguided souls with "religious" leaders preaching to them that this is the only way to achieve greatness.
Al Qaida is NOT standing up to the US. They're kinda like flies on a horse. They are annoying but the horse just swaps them away with its tail. I wouldn't say they have much of a backbone either. Fanatical terrorists are often fueled by religion ( a skewed view at least). Bravery or having a backbone is not required to blow yourself up in a crowd of your own innocent people, only a strong conviction that God will save you in the end. Seems like a copout to me.

You know you can just right click on the folder in question and choose "remove from favorite folders"?

Then make the whole damn building out of windows. Seems like a brighter idea.

I can't seem to link to the actual search but if you search on "timing chain" you should get the idea.
It wasn't all bad though...what better time to throw an aluminum flywheel in and upgrade brakes, lines, etc...
Intersting bit of trivia...the timing chain was intially decided on because the engineers had originally planned on a diesel version of the Vr6.

That shouldn't matter. If he does lean to the left then I applaud the Reagan adminstration for not playing party politics.
Pass the doobie when you're done.
You are soooo l33t
I applaud the fact that another leech has bitten the dust, and can no longer make an easy living selling the fruits of other people's works to noobs and lusers.I hope you see the hypocracy in your statement.
Its PUSH not LIFT!! ;-)
Someone mentioned earlier...Isn't water most dense at 4 degC? Which would mean water at the lowest depths would be close to that temp?

Ohh...and thanks for the level headed responses and reminding me of Adam Smith's insight into...welfare I suppose.
