    If your goal is to decimate your enemy then enough well placed bombs would destroy their infrastructure in no time. We could do most of it from our own soil. We have been involved in some rather unconventional wars in the last couple of decades. With the advent of precision weapons and stealth bombers it wouldn't be too hard. That said, I hope it never comes to that.

    Those are some wonderful generalizations there. Sounds like a personnal attack on someone you are too scared to confront directly.

    I take offence to your view that if you are into gadgets then you must be lacking something. The only "gadget" I carry with me is a simple cell phone but I have plenty more that stay at my house. Does an iPod make you stupid?

    I remember a teacher telling me years ago...if you every decide you want to patent something write or print all necessary documents, put them in an tamper proof envelope and mail them to yourself. You'll have an official date stamped on the envelope when it gets back to you. I don't know if this would stand up to an army of lawyers but it seems like one of the best ways to prove that date of your "idea".

    This is purely anecdotal but I am running Vista on a PIII laptop with 768mb or RAM. It performs just fine for general use.

    I'm glad to see this happen. I'm not a Linux user but I have used XBMC on the Xbox. I really appreciate its grown up style compared to the 360 interface. Plus all the other great things XBMC is capable of. Would it be possible to make it run and boot from a flash drive? With sizes getting larger and larger it would be pretty cool to carry a mini media center around with you.

    If you have ever been in any offices doing any type of logistics work you'll hear the word "engineer" thrown around a lot. What does "System's Engineer" mean anyway? They're sure as heck not doing any *actual* engineering work.

    I remember reading in a textboox years ago that Oxford had roughly the same number of addresses. This was the late ninentees so things might have changed. Regardless, I think there are many institutions that have WAY more addresses than needed.

    To be fair, it is within a country's rights to try and protect its exports from abuse. As America has moved towards a service economy one of it's primary exports is entertainment. Unfortunately that export is easily copied and distributed. While it is silly for the US to try and force its laws on other countries I think it's within reason to expect them to want to protect their industries. Do you expect the creators of "artistic" works to not be compensated? This isn't even a fair use issue unless you mean it should be fair use to rip people's work freely.

    I am not arguing for copyright (I understand there is some need for reform there) but you act like if one of your country's main exports was being openly ripped off you wouldn't want your government to call out the offenders and try to put an end to it.

    Sorry to go off topic here...I would like to preface this by saying that going to war with Iran would be horrible and stupid but not for the reasons you site. Simply put, we could destroy Iran without having to set foot in their country and without using nuclear weapons. The first Gulf War was a walk in the park and I imagine Iran would be the same.

    About the printers. If the drivers are already in the Windows repository you don't need admin privelages. When I am building a master image I go to install a printer and when it prompts me for the make/model I select Windows Update. That puts updated drivers into the Windows driver repository

    I agree with the GP on imaging. My goal is to get the machine out back to them as fast as possible. If I can't find a reasonable solution in a reasonable amount of time I would be stupid to not image the machine. I don't know what he means about the data though. That is perfectly recoverable and can be placed right back were it was before. About the only thing the user loses is there fufu wallpaper and any other custom settings that should take all of five minutes to fix.

    Buy an HDTV and free yourself from the crap cable tv you've been watching. My tv stays on Discovery HD for most the day now. HDNET and INHD offer very compelling HD only programming as well. Like the other poser said...if you would enjoy the shows just as much in black and white then ditch your set. Surely you didn't really mean that. You don't have to try to rationalize your decision to not get an HDTV however that doesn't mean that there is good value in one. Personally, I game on my TV (Xbox360 and PC) which is more than enough justification for most people on Slashdot.

    The word "many" must have different meaning to you than it does for most other people. I can't pull any numbers because of the corporate firewall but I thought there were only a small handful, like two, games that played in full 1080p.

    Planet Earth looks awesome over crappy cable HD, I can't imagine what it looks like on BluRay.

    One reason...HTPC. I have a HTPC connected to my 56" Sammy. It's only 720p but I would sure love to get a full 1920x1080 resolution for PC use.

    Please, I invite you to come to the Northeastern corridor...Washington DC, Philidelphia, New York, Boston. Between these cities there is hardly an acre of undeveloped land. If a high speed train from DC to New York was feasible it would have been done by now.

    I remember watching the History channel a few years back on they tried to explain America's problem with high speed trains...

    Basically, our rail system was in full swing before high speed trains were a thought. Our northeast corridor is so crammed and twisty that it would take a major rehaul of our rail system to take advantage of new train tech. Kind of how the US spent billions decades laying land lines before wireless exploded and superceded that requirement.

    Surely there is more to that story?!?! Any right minded individual/country would just say f*ck you. We can deal with semantics all day long but if this is indeed true and the UK doesn't stand their ground on this then I believe the world bears part of the blame for the American government's elitist attitude. They are so used to countries bowing under pressure, they don't care. I'm an American but am asking the world governments to grow a pair and stand up for a change.

    I know it seems much more complicated than that but it isn't. Problem is I guess, most other countries are too busy worrying about their agenda they don't bother.

    Thoughts?
