    I think a bigger concern for them is that it would prove disasterous for their case- their list of banned newsgroups, at least as far as anyone could identify\

    Any adult related USENET groups gets CP related spam. Even the regular ones get hit with it. How about they attack the originating IP rather than banning an entire group?

    Post the blacklist so we can independently verify that they have not made any mistakes!

    Their argument will be "We don't want to publicly give out lists of this material to people who may use it for reasons other than verification!"

    They'll keep ducking no matter what.

    I use pfSense too.. great firewall btw.

    I thought about sending my logs to a server but haven't had the time to research it. I'm trying to setup a linux box to capture the logs and run it through a web-server to generate the reports I need on the fly. Any ideas? And yes I googled... too many old information out there.

    Free for home use. I use it and it's nice. It's a CPU usage whore though.

    If your backups "just happen" to get microwaved or otherwise destroyed, you'll quite likely be getting charged with destruction of evidence.

    I was making a reference to when you say "Mac Address" the terminology will make them think you're referencing an Apple computer.

    I agree with you 100%, Golias, but whoever wrote this bill clearly doesn't understand the concept of a MAC address. If you tell them you can forge their MAC address, they will say "But I'm on windows!"

    Did anybody point out that text files are easy to edit? Lines can be altered, removed or even added to them!

    Not only that, unless if they are continually pushed to a secure location you could alter them the second that you receive a notice from law enforcement to provide them with logs. They wouldn't know any better if it's authentic or not.

    Nevermind that your cheap Linksys router only outputs the logs to an IP address. It's up to you to hook another machine up to the router to actually capture and store those logs (unless you only want the last 25 or so records that the router keeps in memory).

    Personally I use pfSense and it pushes logs to a Splunk daemon. The upkeep is still going to be expensive in the long term and it would be a lot for just your average user. I doubt they would even know how to configure their linksys box to push the logs somewhere.

    Logging for 2 years? Who is going to pay for the storage costs, backups, etc.? I'm not going to foot the bill for it or get fined because my cheap Linksys router dies after six months of use and I lose my logs.

    They forgot to mention that all file transfers including mp3, wma, wmv, mpeg, etc. files will be logged and sent to the RIAA/MPAA.

    Good for family photos, not good for everything.

    It's because people possibly are viewing by score rather than by post history. He was the first post that is above the 1 threshold (and is first for me), but some people don't check timestamps.

    I'm pretty sure most other countries now have laws against malicious hacking, and also jails. Or are YOU implying that the U.S. is the only country technologically advanced enough to bust people for such activities?

    I think you're making a flamebait post.

    Parent said that it's hard to extradite people and not all of them will pursue it because they have more pressing matters at hand such as food shortages, natural disasters, and civil war.

    Not to say current malware is a giant headache, but at least the days of you getting your HD wiped are pretty much behind us. There's just no money in it.

    It's still required to reformat because if you have a paying customer and you're charging by the hour they want the fastest way. Sure, you can spend 4+ hours (On your average consumer PC) total scanning the computer, deleting registry entries, etc., or you can just reinstall windows (via the latest OEM CD) and get it back to running condition in under 2 hours.

    VPN and SSH tunnels are detectable by most modern intrusion detection/prevention systems.

    To follow up on parent, if you work in a IT department where you can image computers, it's far more effective to just back up their files and reimage the computer. I've spent hours cleaning them only to (as a last resort) reimage the computer.

    No prob, maybe I can help you out. Ever try Anonymouse? It is what we used to get around the filters when I was in school. In fact I used to make $2.50 a pop showing the facebook addicts how to get around the filters so they could get their fix. Knowledge is power, and profits.

    SmartFilter blocks it under "Suspicious Web Reputation" where I work (PA School district).

    Having a brain reduces the infection vectors drastically.

    I forgot sarcasm tags when starting this thread, but there's also many other problems outside of "not having a brain." Unpatched flaws in your operating system, people still running IE6 and opening a JPEG with a script embedded, etc. One can be very intelligent at something completely unrelated to computers and still get infected purely because of a popup and an unpatched system.

    Not everybody knows to run windows update or to update their Ubuntu installation even if it warns them, because it's usually being inconvenient. Usually it's why I set it to do it automatically for users or they won't.
