  10. RMS is the best example... on Sandals and Ponytails Behind Slow Linux Adoption · · Score: 1

A while back I was invited to a FLOSS convention in an Arab country where RMS was a speaker. So he shows up, as usual, wearing his red shirt with sandals ( he was even bare foot at one point as I recall). So he does the usual speech, what freedoms the GPL guarantees, why patents are bad, and bashes Microsoft along the way.
He finishes and we all leave. On the way out I overhear two people speaking to each other, from the looks of it one is a big shot political personality, probably a minister, and his secretary. The minister was wearing a suit that probably costs more than the income of a couple of families for a whole year in that country. The conversation goes like this:

Minister: So who's this guy again?
Secretary: Sir "Seedy in Arabic", this is the American guy that made the company called "Lie-nooks" and he is challenging Microsoft.
Minister: Hmmm, well from the looks of it he's not doing so well...

I just chuckled and moved along. Thing is even the LUG members over there, who had a speech to give, were all wearing suits which is sensible since it was a highly government sponsored event and they didn't want to look like a bunch of slackers.
The sad part is that the minister would have been more convinced if RMS was wearing a suit, I can't even imagine RMS in a suit, and looking like a marketting puppet from a mega-corporation from the states.

  13. Does it run Linux? on Mobile Processor Showdown · · Score: 1

or which laptop runs linux better? i'm not kidding. what i have noticed that centrino laptops have a much better support of linux than amd laptops. and that would definetly put amd in a bad position, for me at least.

when you get a centrino laptop you get the intel wifi card, which is pretty much supported. you also get an intel video card, which AFAIK runs 3d with open source drivers (can someone confirm this?).

on the other hand you've got an amd laptop with different brands of wifi cards, which range between having totally open source drivers or shitty proprietory like broadcom (you gotta use ndiswrapper). and you're stuck with either nvidia/ati/sis video card which aren't open source friendly.

i am currently in the market for a laptop. i do believe that as an architecture/performance/price amd64 is better, however i'd be stuck with a pain in the ass laptop to configure to run linux. i'd rather pay more money for a fully functioning laptop than having to rely on ndiswrapper and buggy closed sourced video drivers.
running knoppix on a centrino laptop of a friend successfully configured everything, even chromium ran without a hitch (thats why i assumed 3d worked with open source drivers). which was cool showing off to the guy that everything worked without the hassle of installing drivers

i'll be getting an acer centrino laptop, BECAUSE IT COMES WITH LINUX NOT WINDOWS XP. fyi acer in the middle east have been bundling linux with pcs, a distro called linpus (kinky name), for a while now. although i'm pretty sure that 99.9999999% of the population reinstall a pirated xp :-(

    since nobody mentioned this yet...
i'm thinking of getting a new cell phone, i have an old siemens c45 which served me great for the last 3 years, since i did like the siemens brand (i got used to it) i had a look at their latest offerings.
i found the siemens cx70 to be a good replacement, being thorough i downloaded the manual, and skimmed the contents until i got to a part which says DRM! apparently it has a DRM chip in, which might not allow you to share melodies/pictures/java apps. this is annoying! i didn't know that they already have these chips everywhere these days!
i got pissed off and started to google around, apparently most new phones (if not all) have these chips inside. so basically i'm paying for this chip to be a cop inside my phone that can deny my of some things...
what could this mean? i am a programmer, so if i decide to program on java midp there's a chance that my phone will refuse to run it!?
i'm all aware that there are business/people who make money/living out of this (four billion dollars, WOW) but what's next? your microwave oven will bitch if use a non licenesed brand of food! or maybe they can put them in PCs so that only authorized software runs... oh wait, that already exists http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/can-you-trust.html
so now i'm seriously considering just changing the battery & cover of my OLD non-DRM cell phone! am i right, or am i being just paranoid?
here's the an excerpt from the manual:
well i just tried to copy that part, aparently even the pdf is protected! why the hell would you do that for? here's the manual http://communications.siemens.com/cds/frontdoor/0, 2241,hq_en_0_63510_rArNrNrNrN_variation%253A-5_pag eType%253Amanuals_imagePos%253A0,00.html#content
