    MTV died right after their first Spring Break Special. That's when they discovered that selling TnA to teenagers on MTV was better then selling 'M'usic -- that was probably 1986 or something.

    Don't get me wrong. Javascript has it's place-- it's great for some client-side UI stuff, and it can be used to print user-friendly error messages (but I've see a ton of crap using Javascript: Check out the poor quality of the registration section of the Linuxworld Expo website for some examples-- the developers behind it should be canned : http://www.linuxworldexpo.com/live/12/events/12SFO 05A/

    But many people use it exclusively, and don't have sufficient server-side validation. That's asking for trouble.

    you are ILM and have $countless millions$ to afford the top of the line software.

    They also develop their own customized and home-developed Apps. Pixar developed Renderman/PRMan (a huge expense, with many developers involved, if I remember right), ILM has heavily customized versions of their own software, etc. Each place has an army of support staff to support these customized apps, etc.

    They use Linux because they can strip away the crap and customize the heck out of it-- they effectively have custom Linux Distro that is highly specialized to render images in a huge network farm.

    I understand the bias in regards to the political parties-- but the bias against gender is a sign of immaturity. I expected better.

    For as much as we hate George W. Bush, at least nobody of his gender has ever rolled their eyes when we quoted Jabberwocky!

    Funny you should say that. My Sunday School teacher, his wife, and my male HS Civics teacher/Mayor of my town have accused me of Satanism for reciting that poem.

    And for the record, I know plenty of woman who know the Poem by heart. It's popular among geeks in both genders.

    Why should I make the sever process this.

    Javascript has plenty of uses, but relying only on client-side code to validate data is a recipe for disaster.

    On the server side, it's usually an extremely simple action to check the validity of the data.
    The server MUST have functions to check for data integrity.

    You should also enforce the rules in the database.

    If you rely on the client to do all this, you'll need to deal with buggy clients, or people who copy your page, create their own cracked version of the page, and use the cracked version to screw with your server.

    There's plenty of use for client-side javascript, but you shouldn't use it as an excuse to exclude server-side security.

    It's a fair criticism of the .sig, but 120 characters is pretty limiting. Now I tried to fit both, but I need to use the stupid phrases "repubs" and "demos" so that all the info will fit.

    No, it's mostly a left-leaning site, with a strong libertarian (With a small 'l') streak.

    But I'm getting really tired of the "Fuck that Bitch" attitude while ignoring the male assholes who do the same thing.
    It's reflective of a site that is 97% male, and incapable of thinking outside the box.

    First off, as a Leftist with many Leftist friends living in the most liberal section of the country, I can tell you we don't regard Senator Clinton as Liberal or Left-leaning at all. She's a moderate. Sometimes she sponsors liberal legislation, sometimes she sponsors Conservative legistlation-- but most of the time she does what every other Representative does-- they sponsor legislation which will offend the least amount of people while making them look busy.

    Second-- in regards to GTA: It's not just Clinton is it? You're so busy blaming Clinton, you ignore the House while they slip same sort of investigation under the radar.

    Over in the House, Congressman Upton, a Republican from Michigan, introduced the bill to the House. It passed 355 for, 21 against, 56 abstain. Nobody is complaining about him.

    You are wise to look at the big picture. You can easily see that Clinton is getting way more coverage and blame then the Congressional Republican who introduced the stupid bill in congress?

    Why is nobody complaining about him? Granted, he's a Congressmember and is therefore less powerful then any Senator, but what's with the complete silence?

    This is stupid. Why are all you idiots pinning the blame on Clinton, when plenty of other government representatives are involved, including Republicans.

    Yet nobody here is saying "Oh fuck those Congressional Republicans for introducing the supid bill", or fuck those Democrats and Republicans for passing the bill. You're saying "Fuck that Senator Clinton".

    It's true, Senator Clinton also asked the FTC to investigate Rockstar, and it's a stupid waste of time-- ala the Janet Jackson breast exposure.

    A male congressmember can be an asshole and nobody complains, but as soon as Senator Clinton gets uppity, you all call her a bitch. Where the even-handedness here?

    Apu was America's idea of an Indian before H1-Bs came around.

    But America's idea doesn't necessarily reflect reality.

    Most of my Indian friends are American born-- all professional, born in places like New Jersey, Ohio, etc. Indians have been a sizable minority for several decades now.

    They are all citizens. None of them have ever had an H1-B visa. Their parents are immigrants, just like my European parents.

    They are my friends, collegues & neighbors.

    This is what we get for handing our children's education over to the government.

    You say that as if public education is a recent development. American Public Education goes back as far as the American Revolution, and has roots that go back even further. It sounds like you are not aware of this history, so here's a primer. Read and learn.

    Abandoning the poor people is bad for the American economy and American democracy. If anything, you can trace the growing ruin of American society to increased privatization and reduced funding of public services such as Public Education.

    Google's portal lacks too many features still, and I don't think they have any plans to add some of these.

    Yahoo has essential features like a Calendar, a place to keep files, I can list my 300 bookmarks in a hierarchy (Google just has one big list), Yahoo Mail lets me send email with my own email addresses in the "From:" line (Gmail uses Reply-to:, which ain't the same), which allows me to keep using the 10+ email addresses for different purposes (one for usenet, one for recruiters, one for mailinglists, one for personal, etc).

    The Calendar, Todo List, Address book all sync with any palm device or any Outlook-compatable office program (Evolution included).

    Gmail's address book doesn't support most of the information when I import my address book from Outlook or Evolution.

    These are critical features in my book. I want ONE set of stuff which is consistant at my home, on the web, on my Palm, in my phone, etc. Google doesn't do this for most of their features.

    Actually, isn't it a mistake to try to seperate the two?

    It's the "Yin and Yang", or the 'Yin-Yang' as I understand it-- two opposite pieces of the same energy, both integral and complementary to each other. They cannot be removed from the whole, or the whole is destroyed.

    Using the word 'or' actually distorts the original meaning-- 'or' imply two different pieces, the Yin OR Yang-- with we're really talking about one thing.

    Yes, this sounds pedantic, but I think it's actually an important difference.

    2gB is plenty of space

    I can just imagine the look on people's faces when the article submitter, an IT Manager, goes to the staff and suggests gmail as a solution.

    Some of us have these things called a J O B. At most jobs, 2GB is NOT enough space to backup all the core systems.

    And again, what if the provider gets cracked?

    I think I understand why you think 2GB is "plenty" of space.

    I have considered it, maybe I'll try again.

    I just wasn't anxious to have my bookmarks on a publically viewable server. And I'd like a simpler interface to add bookmarks (Ctrl-D works great).
