  1. Re:And.... on Hotmail On Your Desktop · · Score: 1

Why would I want hotmail when I can use gmail, a product from a company that does no evil and only has my interests at heart? Right? Right?

???? Google is interested only in its stockholders (as any other capitalistic company is supposed to be). You may prefer them because they are less agressive than MS, but it does not mean that they really care about you -they treat you well just because they think it is the best thing for themselves. And I won't argue if that is due because "they are nice" or "they are not as strong as Microsoft yet", because it would be talking about things you and me just do not know.
I'll agree with you when Google spend all of the money that it returns to the stockholders in social activities, and without being a PR stunt.

Travelling to great speed does not have an anti aging effect... It changes the "duration" of time, but the effects on the body related to the time spend does not vary. The classical effect of the astronauts who returns to earth 70 years before having aged only 7 years is due to the fact that the astronaut has spend only 7 years in the space (from his point of view).

Just to add one more reason to the post:

For some reason, as soon as a budget and a deadline are involved, all of the lessons we've learned over the years and applied successfully to open source projects seem to fly out the window.

Having being in several software development companies, I can tell that the main reason for that is that you are dealing with a sort sighted manager/organization that does not understand that these things, while spending money during the development, actually save a lot later. In fact, many organization with better knowledge have QA metrics to avoid a manager too centered in lines of code to slip a poorly documented project.

Also remember that the issue at hand (trading good engineering for development budget) may be too materialistic for an OS defender, but remember that money is behind a lot of development of software that, otherwise, would have not been developed. Think also that it funds efforts far beyond the OS comunity reach (I remember looking at MS site for psychological studies on how to design a better interface, how does the brain work when recognizing written text, etc.)

And, having had to look "under the hood" of several OS projects, I can find that the documentation of many can be improved a lot (IIRC, one of the examples was when I needed to find out when a very large HTTP message failed to be received by tomcat).

Of course if people is no assured any deal, it will be easier to get in budget. But, if they have those damn labour rights or opportunities to work elsewhere, do not be surprised if you are finished with some lawsuits and/or no staff/community at all.

The ideal metric should be errors / information (in bits)... the trouble is that it is difficult to find out how to measure the bits of information in an article (do not confuse this measure with the number of characters in the article).

My guess is that professional editors are more used to a direct approach to the subject of the article, thus making it shorter but more information dense, so I do not find this a good measure of wikipedia reliability. In fact, this "smaller size" should be considered as being more "user friendly" that an article too long and that does not conform only to the matter of the article.
