You've got to be kidding, right? AAC is an open spec. It's more efficient then MP3, uses less power to decode (important for portable devices), and isn't saddled with 14 different, incompatible tagging schemes. It's also the format that Apple customers expect. Not only that, but just about every player that can handle MP3 can also handle LC AAC.

That's fine that you've got some MP3 player from the nineties, but stop trying to find things to complain about and drop 80 bucks on something that can handle the newer format. Technology does become obsolete, you know.

Apple isn't OSX. Apple is their software and their hardware. Apple is iTunes, Pages, iPhoto, EFI, FireWire, iPods, slim laptops, little minis and quad-core desktops. When I was younger and had more time I didn't mind building my own machines. I didn't mind wondering if I was using USB 1 or 2, or messing with drivers all day to get the DVI out of my video card to work right or WPA-PSK to work with my network card. I love OSX, but I think a lot of the magic would be gone if the vertical integration was removed. I still have an old box I built a couple years ago, and it runs Ubuntu, which is OSX for home-built boxes as far as I'm concerned.

You don't think Apple is going to come up with a non-phone iPod? You think their strategy is to completely abandon their entire market of people who are happy with their current phone and service and not sell any portable music player for under $500 and with a 2-year contract? There is a market for a $500 kick-ass iPhone, but it's probably not the people who currently own $79 shuffles.
