I think you missed this part of my post:

    then do what you can

And this part of the statement I was replying to:

What your kid does is entirely within your control.

Read the entire thread. All I was trying to say was that even for a good parent, your child's every move is not entirely within your control (maybe ESPECIALLY for a good parent) and that even good kids with good parents will listen to a bad outside influence now and then - it's part of growing up. The person I was replying to seemed to think that only a bad parent (one who "[had] children without having the resources and maturity to take care of them and raise them properly") would not be able to entirely control with whom their child speaks and interacts.

It's been shown over and over again that once children enter school, their peers have greater influence over their personality and decisions than their parents do. You've got genetics plus about 5-6 years to instill your values, then do what you can and hope for the best. Both the genetics and the first few years can be very strong influences, but they're both often rebelled against during the teen years and their true influence might not be seen til after college.

Plus, Apple made some absolutely ridiculous design errors - most of which, thankfully, were fixed with 10.5.2 (if you could get it to install).

I definitely wouldn't say "fiasco," you're right, that's outright hyperbole, but it seems like it's been a rougher upgrade than any other recent one. The soup was definitely lukewarm, but it's not like there was spit in it, or it was the wrong soup.

Someone please create something similar for the DS! For a learning environments design class, my partners and I designed something along the same lines, only not an MMO, to teach Swedish (one guy happened to know Swedish) on the DS. Just the bare-bones outline of a design, no programming, but something like that would ROCK. Everyone in the class agreed we wanted one - some people would even buy a DS to get that kind of a language-learning game in preparation for a trip.

The DS is the perfect platform - multiple types of possible input, including typing, writing, and voice (which could be turned off if you're on the go), portable, affordable. Create a game where you're a tourist in some foreign city and must complete little missions like finding a hotel and eating in a restaurant, along with something more out-there for the fun factor. In addition to language, you'd be able to get some cultural info (like currency, etc) as well as a map of part of the city if that's where you'll be visiting. Sure, the stores etc won't be accurate but it could incorporate major tourist landmarks like museums and historical sites.

SOMEONE PLEASE STEAL THIS IDEA AND MAKE IT. Please. I have no idea how to go about making a video game.

Big difference between bringing a fake gun to school and planting the fake gun in someone else's backpack. So when you said:

European governments are utterly blocked and halted things. They never do anything.

You actually meant "they manage to do everything all at once, even the contradictory things, thus making most of what they do meaningless"? Because "they never do anything" implies that none of these laws get passed (which is what happens in the US when the parties are evenly balanced), but you're saying now that they just ALL get passed and because of that nothing works.

And this is because the Ministers of various things are free to act in whatever way suits their party without approval by Parliament, is that right? (Just trying to understand how this works. In the US, you do have different departments that can do some things autonomously, but in the end they all still answer to Congress, the President, and the Supreme Court and many of their ideas/proposals have to be directly approved by Congress. For instance, the Dept of Education couldn't just declare No Child Left Behind to be official policy, Congress had to approve it.)
