Yes that's true and also since Apple introduced the 5 Pack for $199 it's gotten cheaper per machine in the house too.

I currently have 3 Macs that will be upgradeable for around $66 each. 30 Months since Tiger so whats that? Less than $30 per machine per year at the current rate.

    Not bad at all IMHO.

I think you are spot on about the personal aspect and the rise of the iPod and iPhone as sister devices for the iBook are really assisting in this.

The difference is that this has always been Apple's stance and business model since day dot. You want Mac OS, buy a Mac - it has always been this way.

MS on the other hand has always been the "it's the software stupid" model - hey if it runs, go for it!

Now they are artificially drawing a line in the sand on VMs.

It's not that Apple is BETTER than MS in this regard it's just that MS is now attempting to retard the "open hardware" model that has made them successful.

"Starting from the Win Word 2.0 code base presented a couple of technical problems for those of us on the Mac side. The first was that it was written to the Windows APIs. Solving this problem isn't simply a matter of writing a layer that emulates the Windows APIs on the Mac."

    OMFG Pwned! Emphatically even.

And yes I do all my 300 page technical proposals in TextEdit too. Everyone does. I'm surprised they sell any Mac version of Office at all with TextEdit around. In fact I find stickies does most documents just fine without the bloatware of Textedit required.

  12. Mac users need iPhone more than Leopard on Apple Delays Leopard to October · · Score: 4, Interesting

I want Leopard, I really do, but honestly Tiger is a great OS and I can live a few months more with it.

The IPhone however, we need to be great.

For those of you that think iPods, AppleTVs, and iPhones are supplanting the Mac for Apple, you clearly weren't listening to Jobs from the early days of his return.

He said that digital lifestyle was the future and the Mac was the centre of that.

Every time someone buys one of these digital lifestyle devices and find they work better on the Mac, they will consider a Mac for their next computer.

Back in the 90s Microsoft effectively killed the Mac in enterprise by releasing good Windows Office and bad Mac Office.

Digital lifestyle is Apple's MS Office.

Don't sweat it - the Mac stays.

By not licensing fairplay the only way for others to get into sales for the somewhat successful(!) ipod is through DRMless format.

I'm sure this has been to the benefit of organisations like emusic which can and do sell unencumbered mp3s to ipod owners.

If the labels want to get into online sales directly the only realistic way to do it is via DRMless mp3 or aac.
