Fringe benefit tax is the norm in Australia.
In my opinion, FB should be taxed. The extreme example of Steve Jobs announcing he would renounce his salary shows this. It is otherwise just a loophole to reduce tax. But if you're going to start closing loopholes, there are bigger fish to fry.
I first read about this in 'I capture the castle' a 1940's novel in which some americans come to england. They are from California and New England, if I remember correctly.
I have seen some people do this in Australia as well. I think it more out of lack of left handed coordination than anything else...
the point of security theatre is to give the impression that something is being done. this is important because there is a high level of dependence on air travel. if people are too afraid to use air travel because of potential threats it would mean airlines could not maintain their business model. from a government point of view, apart from having to bail out said airlines financially, there is also a business need to keep people flying so that global business may continue to expand limitlessly until the limit is hit.
not to mention that i also just looked at their bios and larson-green has worked at microsoft for 19 years and sinofsky 23 years. these are not jobs where you send in your resume and a cover letter about how good you are.
we are in trouble if we start thinking that slashdot article's departments actually mean something other than the editor doing their best to coin a witticism.
as if the schools these guys went to makes a difference? their skills are learned from experience working in the industry and their value is in using their judgement based on that experience to make the best choices.
listen to his wishy washy talk. what do you think he'd say about drones and kill lists?
"I am very poorly today & very stupid & hate everybody & everything. One lives only to make blunders.
I am going to write a little Book for Murray on orchids & today I hate them worse than everything"
Those poor orchids, feeling the wrath of Darwin.
some things don't change once they take hold. postage stamps. passports. credit cards. social security numbers. things that identify individuals. the powers that be see it as necessary that you are uniquely identifiable online the same as in the real world.
as for facebook fading like myspace? Facebook has a billion users. 1/6th of the worlds population. myspace at its peak had 100 million. that is what i would call post critical mass.
it worries me how much mental energy they were putting into something as simple as getting dressed or what to have for breakfast. sounds like an anxiety disorder to me.
folks are getting all excited as these guys are getting traction on reporting that the macbook pro in april 2010 will have lightpeak. the fact is they probably know less than you.
amusingly in their post where they claim all this about ipad, mbp and lightpeak they cite their previous prediction in an article from september of an update to to the macbook air in "October or November" and "The base MacBook will cease to exist" while "Gone will be the custom packaged Core 2 Duo, and in it's place will ride Intel's latest Core i-series of processors".
I and any other pundit can guess at months with a good chance of being in the ballpark, but they clearly do not have a source with access to apple details.
They are not a reliable source of information and should not be reported on at all - expect possibly for comic relief, providing fodder for the/. trolls picking off easy targets that are apple fanatics.
he has analysed nothing. how much money these "analysts" are paid for stating the bleeding obvious is beyond me.
this should be under the no-shit-sherlock dept.
hard to know which iconic australian hat you are thinking of, maybe the akubra that the prime minister loves to wear, proving his australianness? i'd be impressed if he wore a traditional hate with corks on string to the keep the flies away. none of them however are fedoras of redhat fame.

I wish more governments would build parks. I would vote for anyone promising to build parks!

That half would of course, be the female half.
Thanks for making an unnecessary sexist remark.

payphones are only still in place because of legislation. if the phone company was allowed to remove them, they would.

why is slashdot censoring fuck and shit? how do i turn that off?
i would still not choose to use as my main working OS, but I see it as a great improvement over windows 7.
the universe already owns the rights.
One may also ask 'Why would you play WoW?' but the answer is not a pleasant thing to say.
The International Committee of the Red Cross has been connecting people separated by conflict and disaster since it was conceived in 1859.
