IANAL, but the patent application seems to be pretty specific in saying that it's only in BASIC that they're trying to patent it, so a similar thing in C would likely be unaffected. I don't know what good having this patent would do them, honestly. I can't conceive of any way off the top of my head that this could be infringed if it is granted. I 'll let that kind of brainstorming up to my fellow/.ers.
Unless I'm mistaken, they've only applied for a patent; it has not yet been granted. Sadly, given the state of the patent system nowadays, it would not surprise me if it is granted.
Yeah, but it's been eight years, seven months, sixteen days, four minutes, twenty two seconds since it got to use any of them.
No, make that 32 sec--33, er wait, 34...screw it.

the "Elitism" of Linux supporters is sometimes overwhelmingly sick
The elitism of some Linux supporters is overwhelmingly sick, yes. May I point out, however, that the most vocal among us are not necessarily representative of the most commonly-held opinions in the community? I'm a big Linux supporter, but I use Solaris quite a bit here at work, and I have no problems with it whatsoever.
I think the philosophy behind Linux is probably the best philosophy in software, but I acknowledge that there are things that Linux is not best suited for. Such is true for all operating systems.
All I ask is that everyone (not just you) keep in mind that the zealots for any software/philosophy/whatever are exactly that, and should not be the basis of forming any opinions about a community as a whole.
It's been a while since I watched the first one, but I could've sworn that there was a minute or two of Wil saying something in response to an interview question cut into it somewhere. I can't remember the topic at that point, though. Maybe I'll pop it in and check when I get home.
I didn't have any problems ordering it with Comcast, but since I was also setting up cable Internet access, maybe they were a little more understanding about the TV side of things.
"Nurse, will you please install Mandrake Linux for me one more time? I promise this will be the last."
If you're going to install a Linux distro for the last time, you should probably choose Gentoo. At least you'll be able to savor the experience longer.;)
The people who manage the proxy servers here have a URL filter for most webmail clients, but for some reason haven't bothered to block/.. Don't ask me why; I've long ago stopped trying to apply logic to this place.:)
Uh, last I checked, the menu of options for emails included a "Move to Trash" option, and I believe you can empty the trash folder. I'm at work or I'd double-check, but I'm pretty sure I've been able to delete emails from my gmail account.
I didn't have that problem, thankfully. In fact, even though the regs say only first time voters have to have valid ID, they were checking everyone's. Certainly made me feel more confident in the process in my district.
A lot of people don't seem to know that you don't have to use slashes as your delimiters. I use curly braces, myself, which would make the example you gave a little clearer:
s{^/\\\$(.*)$}{//$1/};
And of course, you could always use the x modifier (i.e., s{}{}x) to split the regular expression across multiple lines and document it.
That's a pretty good point. I work at a Navy installation and I would not be able to bring a camera-enabled cell phone on the base with me. Considering that I'm moving towards using only a cell phone as my means of sending and receiving calls (dropping the landline at my apartment, for instance) that's a bit of a problem for me.
I want to take pictures and make movies with my phone, manage contacts, handle appointments, listen to music... Because it is most convenient to have all that stuff in one device if you'd like to be able to do it all the time.
I'm honestly not trying to be a smartass here, but what's wrong with getting a laptop for contacts, appointments, music, etc.?
I tried Thunderbird briefly, but ended up sticking with Evolution because of its ability to sync contact list and calendar with my Palm. Otherwise it seemed like a high-quality product, though.
I've tried to get my parents to switch to something else, but they're not computer savvy and very unwilling to learn a new way of accessing the Internet, AIM chatrooms, etc. They'd rather pay more so they don't have to learn anything else.

"[Tony Alleyne] turned the sleeping area into transporter pads (which are functional, BTW)."
:)
Dude, hook me up with one of those! I'd much rather beam from place to place than spend part of my paycheck on gas every week!
Maybe he actually meant "I think you're on something"? That would be a safe assumption on /. :)
Just out of curiosity, anyone here still running 2.4? All the Linux users I know are on 2.6 for their machines. My Linux server is still 2.4, though.
And since I brought it up, anyone here still got a Linux box running 2.2?
I didn't have any problems ordering it with Comcast, but since I was also setting up cable Internet access, maybe they were a little more understanding about the TV side of things.
Hey! Just because our water swirls the other way down the drain.... :P

Actually, 90% of obfuscation is perl scripts. :)

I'd rather that it be able to teleport me. Imagine the gas savings.
In Soviet Russia, this joke will be WAY too overused for this article.
As a Mozilla user, I can definitively state that we're holier-than-thou assholes even when we're not posting on discussion boards. :)
Here I was getting ready to laugh at the obvious spoof on stupid video game ideas, when I hit paragraph two. Now my head hurts and I want my mommy.

Knowing Lucas, this is probably still a beta. :)
