Political problems, bah! The Chinese will do this first, launching a nuclear version that is. They will simply do it and dare the world to do anything about it! Domestic protest, if it occurs in China, will simply be harvested and skinned for their collagen so western women can have skin with the 'high pro glow'. Foreign protest can simply be dealt with by secretly threatening the protester hosting nations with trade repercussions against their bloodsucking co-conspirator industrialists. Look what happens when Canadians protest! See how fast they get absolutely hosed with pepper spray if they dare to breath a word of complaint against Chinese actions...or corporate monopolist actions as well.
Actually I say more power to the Chinese. They have the will to be winners in the world survival game. We in the west have lost our will, and survival will go to those able to achieve the triumph of the will, as then they will prove themselves fit to rule. We have proved ourselves unfit as we are weak and internally conflicted, lacking the guts to survive.
he said The pacifists' "championing" of Hitler referred to by Orwell is simply a recognition by us that Hitler and Germany contain a real historical dynamic, whereas we do not. Whereas the rest of the nation is content with calling down obloquy on Hitler's head, we regard this as superficial. Hitler requires, not condemnation, but understanding. This does not mean that we like, or defend him. Persoanlly, I do not care for Hitler. He is, however, "realler" than Chamberlain, Churchill, Cripps, etc, in that he is the vehicle of raw historical forces, whereas they are stuffed dummies...living in unreality. We do not desire a German "victory"...but there would be a profound justice, I feel, however terrible, in a German victory.
Being like him is a very bad thing. George Orwell wrote acidly that "pacifism is objectively pro Fascist".
Barnum tried to buy the Cardiff Giant off its owners, but they wouldn't sell. So he had one of his own carved, and traveled around exhibiting it. Barnum was showing a fake fake.
That's genius. If they made it they could claim copyright and sue him hut then their Giant would be worthless. But if they claimed it was genuine they couldn't and he could just say he found his own.
I've always thought ID and a lot of other things like Cold Fusion are more wishful thinking than true hoaxes. Since they claim to 'prove' something that some people want to believe those people overlook the holes in the theory.
China, for instace, tries to make the case that Peking Man (Homo erectus pekinensis), a real hominid, is the direct ancestor of the modern Chinese race, while the rest of us are lower on the tree, coming from Africa.
This is one of these things that I can't see how anyone can believe. Humans are all one species, given that humans of all races can interbreed. If we had more than one origin I can't see how this could be true. Different origins to me imply different species and different species mean no interbreeding.
They'll just rant angrily about how the US was never really ahead in the space race, the moon landings were hyped up to cover up a genocidal war in Vietnam and in any case the Soviet Union was far ahead in the peaceful use of space and so on.
And then someone will prod them with an AK47 for speaking English instead of Chinese or Arabic and they will get back to work.
The thing is that if you're internet-literate, reporting about Twitter is like reporting about the different sizes of paper your adversary might use to send a letter.
It's all the internet. What you use on the internet is much less significant. E-mail, IM, Twitter, it's all essentially the same. Twitter is absolutely nothing special. It could be torn down and replaced with something else tomorrow. A report which talks about "Twitter" would then be completely invalidated. But a report which simply talks about "the internet" would remain valid. That's really what's silly about this.
It's not "all the internet" to the military. They can probably read some services but not others and that list changes constantly. This report might be a plea to the NSA to approach twitter for a tap so they can scan for keywords or whatever it is they do.
Every time a new messaging medium pops up, someone needs to make sure it can be bugged.
The people that wrote the Constitution said that "that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights". And in fact opponents of slavery later used this to claim that slavery was illegal since "The law of the Creator, which invests every human being with an inalienable title to freedom, cannot be repealed by any interior law which asserts that man is property". Now I think the people that wrote it really did consider the rights in the Bill of Rights to be granted by God not by the Bill of Rights which merely protected those rights from future governments.
Hell, even as an atheist I can accept that some rights are things that you have in absence of any government and should be protected from all governments. And they say Creator rather than God, which is the sort of subtle linguistic distinction they took seriously.
Hopefully DHS agents will decide it is terrorist code and waterboard the submitter whilst asking him questions like "WHO IS GOLLUM?!", "WHAT IS OCR24?!" and the ever popular "WHO ARE YOU WORKING FOR?"
Microsoft wrote a document (collaboarating with Hayes, the inventors of the AT command set) so that devices could identify themselves back in the Win95 days.
Back then I remember buying a serial modem, plugging it in and being impressed that Windows installed Dial Up Networking, the Windows PPP client.
This COM port Plug'n'Play was still around at least until XP, there was a driver called SERENUM.SYS in the stack for serial ports that did the bus enumeration. I don't have any Vista machine with RS232 ports, but a quick Google search makes me think it would be present on a Vista machine that did.
If her audience had Kindles they could save the trip from the sofa to the door, from the door down to the garage, a drive to the mall, a walk up three very steep steps to an elevator and then a walk to the bookshop. And then the whole lot in reverse on the way back. Instead they could just download the ebook from Oprah.com priced cheaper than a print version. More convenient for them and she makes a few bucks.
I would hope it involves putting the everything in a radiation shielded box. I could see how smaller chip architectures might be more susceptible to radiation, but a decade is enough time to figure that out and use exterior shielding instead of hardening. Sure that might be much more difficult, but if you can't handle difficult don't work at NASA. Of course with a Hubble sized budget, there is no excuse for not having several back-up sets of the non-custom parts that might not be available in a few years. Computer components had exhibited that high turn over rate for plenty of time before Hubble launched.
Nope, same species.
He should buy a $599 iClockRadio, right?
Steve Jobs! You magnificent bastard!

A vital part of The Singularity is designing technology that can defend itself, or at least poison people who attack it.
Careful there! That point of view is pretty controversial around here. Edgy even.
The overwhelming consensus amongst MSCEs and MVPs is that Windows Vista is a good OS.
Still, they use edge cases of science to make $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ off of rich fanboys
As a Mac user I find this highly offensive.

You're one of those people who wants the bad guys to win in movies, aren't you?

There are going to be setbacks. Mistakes will be made. For the most part these rocket surgeons do the job, on time.
I think you mean brain scientists.
That's a service

Classic literature will be important in founding a new civilisation once the radiation dies down.
Yes there is

Why do people always talk about those two trips and not the other 118?
What happens if a nuclear war destroys the Amazon servers?
No, thank you very much. I'll keep my paper copies of Heinlein and Kaczynski in my shack in Montana. Next to my guns and three year supply of MREs.

Umm, sorry is Wired supposed to be less lowbrow than Oprah or something?
