  1. Re:Multi-unit Dwelling Too Hard? on Cable Industry Needs to Spend Heavily on Upgrades · · Score: 1

Verizon does have equipment that can accomodate MDU's. The issue is often the property owners, who for whatever reason do not want verizon comming into their complex. Either due to construction issues or aesthetic issues if the equipment needs to be placed on outside structures. Also due to the way the complex is situated may make it extremely difficult for engineers to place the fiber. From what I understand each MDU is handled on a case by case basis due to these issues

  2. Geeks? No such animal here on What Do Geek Squad Technicians Actually Do? · · Score: 3, Insightful

I used to work in the computer repair department of Best Buy and I was on my way out as this Geek squad travesty was put in place. You see I like to think of myself as a competent tech, maybe even good. I know other at least competent techs that worked with me, and although the person who hired me was interested in my technical skill this is not what Best Buy wants. Best Buy wants to get you in for a 1 hour diagnostic $60. You dont fix the issue at this point you just find what is wrong. Then depending on what the issue is, most of the time it was spy or addware. You then sell the customer a $40 service to do a spyware scan and removal, using one of the shitty pieces of software that Best Buy carries. During this process you examine the machine for "upgrades" more memory, larger HD, new video card. Even though the issues the customer is having may be totally independent of the hardware they have, but you are still required to "advise" the customer that these upgrades are necesary. Then the poor customer shells out for over priced hardware and another $20 to $40 to install it. Best Buy doesnt want to fix problems they want to sell you services. I found this out as I noticed my hours being cut more and more, it wasnt because I had a slow turnaround time on the machines I took in but because I wasnt "recomending" services to the customer, even though I knew they didnt need more memory, or that they didnt need MSN dialup because they already had DSL, but we are always susposed to offer. This became readily apparent in two situations someone came in their computer would not boot, at that time Best Buy did allow for us to look at a machine for a few minutes at the counter before we tried to fleece the customer. I determined that a restore was needed on the system. I asked him if he had his recovery cd's he said yes and I told him he just needs to do a recovery. He asked me if he could do it himself and I told him he could, and proceded to tell him how. Put the cd in follow the prompts. The new manager for the computer department heard me helping this person and I was later dressed down for giving out technical information. Another time a woman cam in, in tears her laptop crashed and she had her doctoral thesis on it that was due in the morning. I would have just charged the $60 poped the drive in one of our machines and gotten it for her, but since one of the manager's lackey's was around I had to offer the data recovery service which is way expensive and takes a week. So if you like to buy useless services then Best Buy is for you but there are no Geeks there just greasey salesmen. The prices I quoted are from the time I worked there I am sure there has been significant markup since then.

I have been using the vonage service on comcast cable for about year now. I havent had any issues with the service itself. I did have a horrible time when the box went out and I needed to get it replaced. Other than that the service has been working just great for me. I have no doubts that some people may have real issues with the service, but are they attributed to vonage or their isp/equipment?

  4. Re:Really cool.. on Nanotube Paint Blocks Cell Phones on Demand · · Score: 1

You might not sue the phone company if your phone fails to ring, but the PUC will. Telco's are federally regulated and unless the issue is with the wiring in the home it is not an unreasonable expectation to want your phone to ring everytime. Every phone trouble you call in to your telco is open to the PUC and if a telco starts getting a lot of voice line troubles the PUC starts to implement fines. I dont know what the threshold is on this. So the comparison between cell phones and landline phones is not valid. If you are a paying customer of a telco you should always have dialtone and if you dont the dialtone should be restored within 24 hours, of course that is barring environmental hazards like blizzards, hurricanes and earthquakes.

The value you get with x-box live is not only multiplayer but also additional free content. An example would be the new levels that were released for splinter cell and the new maps, weapons and vehicles released for battle field 2. Having to pay for the service will allow MS to continue to provide stable service and products. Also it provides quality for gamers in the fact that it being a closed system it greatly cuts down on cheating, or rather hacking your x-box and taking it online and using exploits to ruin the game for everyone else. Also for the 360 they have 3 live service levels. I think they are silver gold and platinum. The silver is free like on the weekend and you cant compete in ranked games, but you can still get the additinal content that might be released for a game. For 60$ a year to not have to worry if the person on the other end is legitamitely kicking my ass or has some kind of bot laoded makes me feel better and also to be listed in rankings and get free extra content.

So lets think about this. You are 10 years older than when you first started computing. So you probably started around 15 or 16? Not to say that ambient room light is not helpful in preventing eye strain and such. But could this just be a case of you are getting older and your vison may just be going down hill? In any case I would seek the services of an optomitrist and have an eye exam done. You are susposed to have one every year anyway I think or is it 7? I could be confusing that with the time you are susposed to renew your license

Anyone ever read burning chrome or virtual light? There was an individual mentioned in one of those books, or maybe both, joseph smith or something like that. He was discovered to have a natural immunity to the HIV virus, he pretty much sold himself out to the pharmaceutical companies..or maybe they bought him, hard to remember. But he was kind of hailed as the second comming since he brought the cure for one of the worlds greatest plagues. I just think it is interesting that William Gibson had this character in his books and now it has come to pass. Now it needs to be discovered if it is actually true.

If you mean wiretaps, yes VOIP serives can be wiretaped, but it is technically difficult, and there are probably legal difficulties. I do know in the US there is something that is starting up in government to try to set regulations for VOIP providers. So that things like wiretaps and access to 911 services in the actual physical location are easier. From what I understand of VOIP its kind of hit or miss if when you dial 911 if you will get a 911 operator. I know that was the case with vonage, but that might not be true now.
