I heard once that putting a proton and electron together gives this same effect of anhilation and release of energy, is this true? Why can't this be done instead then?
Now here's the big question I have. An electron is attracted to a proton but doesn't smash into it, instead it "orbits" it. So why would a positron smash into an electron, shouldn't they just orbit each other?
Apple wants us to think getting 10,000 songs for free is worth untold millions of dollars but the marginal cost to apple, or the record companies is near $0.00.
Just something to remember. I'd rather win something tangible like a house.
That's an excellent question. I've wondered this too. In my opinion continuing a species is not an end in itself. I don't think we would want the human race to continue if it meant immense suffering for all. Think the matrix but with lots of sharp needles instead of the enjoyable matrix shared world fantasy.
But I'm not a "veggie" as it sounds like I got a B-12 deficiency when I tried it;-)
The article had this whole tone like this was a terrible finding, and we should all be mourning.
Then it puts in a blurb at the end about piracy hurting creativity. I think it helps creativity, I'd love to see more Homestar runners and less Britney Spears.
When i first heard this news I immediately dumped all of my EBAY stock. My intuition tells me that google is going to start moving in on EBAY's space. I'm thinking they will either create a paradigm shift in the online auction market (i.e. something so good and different for purchasing that auctions aren't needed) or that they'll do to Ebay what they did to hotmail, and yahoo.mail with gmail, just blow it out of the water.
However I'll probably buy back my Ebay stock when it gets down to about $34.00 since google won't be able to do much within the next 6 months.
So here's a question for you guys. If you owned this company or a similar one, and Microsoft wanted to buy you out for a good price, would you choose not to sell for ethical reasons regardless of the profit you would make?
What if this link contained said illegal images, all 20 of you who clicked it are now criminals since your browser would have loaded an illegal image and cached it (most likely).
Doesn't seem fair, does it? You were just curious where the link went.
I've tried searching for this answer before put I haven't seen a conclusive answer. It seems to me that the ingriedients are there, reproduction, and perhaps mutation from network errors, data corruption, etc? And a follow-up question is if not now, then will viruses evolve in the future when they get more complex?
These papers are the closest thing to an answer I've found but still not conclusive to me: http://www.pcvirus.org/links
I think it is ironic that the biggest ethical questions of our time (this!) will probably be ignored by the majority of our population because "The bible says only humans have souls". So people quible about the "rights" of 1 day old embriyos but don't care if you trap a human mind inside a computer and pull apart the very strings of conciousness.
Obviosly they're not going to get into any ethical issues with 2005 computing power, but maybe in 20-30 years they will. But nonetheless I think people will ignore most ethical issues related to AI. It's probably a good thing for the progress of knowledge but still, isn't it ironic? Perhaps we're lucky to have stem cells and cloning issues to keep Southern State Americans busy while real science can run unencumbered in all other fields.
So participating in a bittorrent may not be proof of wrong doing anymore. Would Fox now have to prove that someone actually came away from the swarm with a full Simpsons episode and that all of the bits came from me?
What is a library? How does the massive copyright industry allow libraries to exist? It seems like libraries are promoting the free exchange of information, isn't that illegal? If books can be lent out for free, why not software, why not video games? Why can't I download e-books from a libarie's website? If information should be freely available for everyone from libraries, shouldn't it also be available over the web? Is the physical act of visiting a library somehow built into the libaries' mandate?
Overall it seems to me that libary are surviving in a small pre-industrialized niche of the information economy and being extremely careful not to offend any coorporations lest they be driven to extinction. They/we even avoid thinking about the philosophy behinds libraries too deeply lest we realize that it conflicts with our information ownership society.
Well, after writing all my questions down, I realize that perhaps libraries could be a launching point for the free information revolution. All we need is one renegade librarian willing to lead us. Are there any risk taking libarians out there today reading this?
Is there such a thing as tide power? You get energy from the tide flowing in and out? Would that get energy from the moon? If so would it be pulling the moon towards us or away?
I believe tidal energy is what keeps the center of Europa allegedly liquid? How does that jibe with conservation of energy?
I've always wanted to know where the energy comes from for this? The moon? There's no free energy right?, are we ever so slightly pulling the moon towards us or away from us?
If I worked at the patent office, I would reject everything that came across my desk. I wonder if I would get in trouble?
Maybe we should all get jobs there??
Free the ebooks people!

Honestly people, it's barbaric to eat animals.
But I'm still stuck doing it.
I tried going vegetarian for a year once but it was boring to eat meals, and it ended up costing a lot more. At least that's what I found.
I'm going to try again in a few years when I have more money and more time to learn new vegetarian recipes.
And if you ever wanted a reason to quit: http://www.peta.org/
Can I get a chant going?
That is well done, that's how documentation should be, just tell me how to do all the common things I might want to do:
move the map
goto a location
blah blah
Try finding useful information like that in under 10 minutes on almost any existing "API".
Maybe if it's ok to borrow a CD, then other forms of piracy like boarding a ship at high sea and stealing it's good is also ok.
Perhaps we should look into this...

We don't need no stinkin patents. This law is a step in the right direction me thinks.

I wonder why the inflight phones are $10/minute then? Maybe they're cheaper now, I haven't checked since 1987.
Umm $10.00 per minute? ..hmm but wifi is usually charged by the hour so that's $600.00/hour. No thanks!

Touché my friend. Flame on, flame on. If only more people thought like you.
That dashboard feature looks neat. Would that help with the information overload?
When will Linux be getting this feature?
