How do I write a python script that will send an html email? i.e. how do you tell the email client that your email is html formatted? I tried just putting html into the body but it didn't work.
Abstract: This article was the last straw for me. I've just been seeing more and more infuriating political articles that I wish I could take action against. So my idea is that for every article on a subject worth protesting, a reader makes a post with a special designated subject line such as "WAYS YOU CAN HELP". Then he/she lists the various ways you can take action to actually protest the thing. I propose we order the ways of taking action by how much you have to care about the issue to take the action. I have an example for this article at the end of this post.
Proposed Solution: The basics are presented in the abstract, but some more details are that people comment on this post and reccomend additions, and corrections. Finally when everyone has had their say, someone compiles the official "take action" document and posts it on a permanment webpage as the start of a wiki for the issue.
Example for this article:
Subject line: "WAYS YOU CAN HELP" Comment: How you can help based on how much you care: 1. The fate of the world depends on fixing this: Start a website and non-profit devoted to fixing this issue. Collect donations and hire lobbyists to buy a fix. 2. I worry about this issue all day! Option A. Pay a visit to the relevant lawmaker. Option B. Plan a protest. Option C. Start a petition (but make sure it's the kind that matters) 3. This is a big problem: Call the relevant lawmaker, explain your concerns. 4. This is a medium problem: Write a handwritten letter to your lawmaker (email s and faxes don't work!) 5. This is a minor problem: Donate money 6. I think I care but I don't really: Complain about it on Slashdot and don't do anything.
Sorry this is offtopic, but I really want to tap into slashdot's collective knowledge sometimes, and I'd hate to do an ask slashdot for such a small question. So here's my question:
I was wondering if I could start a small business by building cheap but high quality PC's with a video capture card, and install Myth TV or something similiar and sell them on Ebay as a "DVR", sort of like a media computer. Would there be a demand for this? How do I get started? I want to search but I don't even know what to search for:-(
Guys, my legacy code doesn't have functions, just VB subroutines that modify global variables. Any idea how to make unit tests for this? And by the way, the functions aren't cohesive, each one is 100's of lines and does different sometimes unrelated things.
1. Website is broken 2. They just won't tell me shipping costs until it's too late 3. Website hangs, freezes, or something doesn't work with Firefox, or my privacy/security settings. 4. I change my mind. 5. I get scared 6. I lose interest 7. The checkout process just takes way too long 8. They want to "verify" my credit card by calling me. 9. I have to sign an agreement. 10. They need too much personal information.

Can't the tv industry get your IP address off of bit-torrent and sue the pants off of you?
Is this guy's admission of backing up a DVD enough evidence for the MPAA to put him away for life??
Here are the pertinent questions: 1. Is it unambiguisly illegal to backup a DVD in the US? 2. Is admitting wrong-doing on Slashdot admissible in court? 3. If I were to backup a DVD I owned and then lose the original and the recipt, then there would be no evidence that it really is a backup. Am I still "allowed" to have the backup?
Haven't they learned from the NYTimes experience? The stuff that is free and redistributed survives and gets popular. This will only hasten their demise. I doesn't make sense to restrict content that you want people to read! Why, it's like a flower charging bees to pollenate it! It just wouldn't last long.
Guys, I live in Maryland. Is that included in the naked DSL?
More generally, how can we lookup exactly what's covered? (Their website asks for a phone number, but I don't have a landline by virtue of being in the market for naked dsl!)
Plan A: Assuming you still have the work you did saved somewhere acaccessible.
Put together some work samples that you believe present no possible harm to your previous employee, Do whatever you have to to make them safe (perhaps print them out, draw permanent marker over sensitive parts and scan them back in!)
Email/mail the samples to your previous supervisor, and write the same message you wrote to slashdot here, but more emotional. Say you want to run your work samples by her to make sure they're ok. (emphasize how careful you'll be not to let anyone keep them or make copies)
If he is reasonable then he'll ok, at least parts of your work samples.
If not go to plan B: Plan B: Write some new samples! Spend up to a week writing a quick application that highlights your skills. It's time well spent and shows an employer that you program on your own time, and that you're self-motivated.
Keep up all updated, we're all wishing you the best of luck!
You always hear about forensic people being able to get at data that's been written over many times on a hard drive. I wonder if there's any way that could be built into a hard drive. Could you store multiple sets of data in the same place on the hard drive and reread it at different sensitivities, or however they recover overwritten data?
Flickr was cool because it wasn't too commercial and wasn't in your face with signing up for shit. I can only picture what will happen under yahoo ownership...
(fade into fantasy sequence 1 year from now)
You go onto Flickr, there are links everywhere for signing up for yahoo junk. I try to upload a photo, but instead I am taken to a page where I am solicited to sign up for something called "Yahoo groups". I try to do a search for a certain tag, but instead of pretty pictures, I get half a page of junk ads and then maybe some layout of pictures that's unusable for some reason. I could go on and on.
I just hope my beloved del.icio.us never sells out.
Wouldn't this just get ruled unconstitutional? I can't imagine this bill would be anything to worry about. It just sounds silly.
Here's something to think about though. Is there something else in the same bill that they're trying to sneak through? Are they using this issue to draw attention away from a controversial but passable provision? I seem to recall this happening with that Federal bill that wanted to make it illegal to skip commercials, I'm not sure though.
Get dial up then have a dedicated 2nd phone line just for it, and leave it connected 24/7. I did this in college and never had a problem. There are lots of free programs out there to do stuff like keep your connection alive, redail on dissconnect, etc.

You're right, there are just some items where "The price is too low for us to show you the price!!!"
I hate it when businesses treat me like I'm dumb. Just tell me the price! Argggh!
I just realized, Amazon forces us to abandon shopping carts! They make you put the item in your cart just to see the price. How gimmiky, tacky, yeck!
Sometimes I'll abandon a shopping cart because I know someone's tracking it somewhere and I want to give them a headache.

How does charging for this comply with the GPL?
I can see how they're allowed to charge for it, but aren't others also allowed to distribute Suse for free?
For $10,000 a year in tuition, yes, I do own the lectures!

Why is this offtopic? I'm asking how to find out exactly what areas are covered by this new service.
Please enlighten me so I can avoid producing future "offtopic" posts.

An oppresive law/technology that is not happening in the US.
Makes you feel kinda good.
Monkeys didn't need a patent system to come out of the trees.

How can two companies (Time Warner and Comcast) buy Adelphia? That doesn't make sense to me. Who would own it?

Let me know, hard drive experts.
I think it should be illegal to advertise the price after rebates. You must advertise the full price, and if you like you can mention rebates later.
It seems like a sensible thing to do.
Am I the only who thinks this is a tragety(sp)?
