  9. Why so negative? I'd hi.. err buy it.. on Microsoft Origami Unfolds · · Score: 1

Its a very small tablet pc.. runs XP albeit modified for the platform and will run Vista too.

As they said you *could* run photoshop on it although I don't suppose there's much point.

Is it too big? Its smaller than my laptop which I got sick of lugging around long ago.. its bigger than my zaurus which I got bored with long ago.

Its not a cellphone.. I have a CELLPHONE for that task.. don't care how fancy cellphones get it will never replace a pc.. too small.. maybe good for a quick ssh session or IM now and then but not much more. I want something I can see without a microscope.

This Origami has a decent sized screen it has vga out so can be hooked up to a monitor, has usb ports so can have real keyboards, has high resolution, has surround sound, has two mics (must be useful for something!), has various controls around the screen, has bluetooth.. not sure about wifi but presume some version will have.. it can run pretty much any windows software.. and..

It has a HARD DRIVE.. 30 - 100+ Gigs hard drive - show me the cellphone that has that.

I run linux on all my PC's and servers but sometimes I could do with a win box also.. this would serve many needs.

Its cheap enough and useful enough to be worth it IMHO. Battery life could be better perhaps but its good enough.. I have found most places these days have electricity.. ;)

Not many wouldn't jump at the chance to have their open source project become part of a big corp. and take a fat payout (assuming thats part of the deal) so you can get a new car, provide for your family and generally live a better life..

Of course once you have made your fortune its easy to go back to idealism albeit no longer quite so young.. ;)

It has a little ajax sprinkled around along with a few other web 2.0 "features" and overall (and perhaps even despite that) its a pretty useful site. Its rather cool IMHWeb2.O ;)

As for those on that list I'd say bloglines is the killer app.. I couldn't get by without that these days.. so many rss feeds, so little time! The rest I could and in fact do live without.

  19. Quick & dirty 'home media center' for the lazy on Building a Linux Home Media Center · · Score: 2, Interesting
My 'solution' for the terminally lazy and/or cheap.. (like me)

    The Server

PC with big disk running linux (or windows if you prefer)

    Install Apache

symlink media directories to default apache home directory

    Done.

    The Player(s)

An old laptop is what I use but you could of course use any pc, maybe a mac mini or whatever takes your fancy.

On the laptop I use firefox with the mplayer plugin - I had to disable local caching in the plugin otherwise it was a bit choppy.

So to play any content from the 'media server' I just browse to it with firefox and click to play.. (and select full screen mode for vids of course) Dead easy and effective enough for my needs.

You could make an interface to the media with perl/php if apache directory listings are not flash enough for you.. ;)

Note this solution would work equally with windows or anything else that runs apache on the server and a browser with media player plugin on the viewer.. which narrows it down to everything out there I think.

Using a laptop for viewing in my case means I can send video output to a tv or projector easily since a tv-out is built in and 'just works'.

The above assumes you have a home network of some kind setup.. and make sure your firewall doesn't allow the world to access your webserver.. ;)
