The political compass, in my opinion, actually obfuscates the differences between left and right. A division of political systems into "economic" and "social" axes is fallacious, because control of one "axis" is tantamount to control of both.
Left is collectivist, which subsumes every totalitarian system that has ever existed; when the "collective" (the nation, society, the "whole") is exalted above the individual, "the good of the whole" (which is usually decided by a ruling class) always comes at the expense of the individual, and authoritarian measures are needed to enforce this. For example, there can be no such thing as a "leftist libertarian," because leftism (collectivism) is inherently totalitarian. The "collective" rules.
Right, on the other hand, is individualist. The socio-economic system of the right is capitalism with a small government whose only function is to ensure the protection of its citizens' rights. There can be no such thing as a "right authoritarian," because individualism is inherently anti-authoritarian.
Notice also that there can be no "blending" or "mixture" between these two ideologies, as they are mutually exclusive. A left-right "gradient scale," then, is also fallacious; so-called "mixed systems" always result in rent-seeking, which is collectivist.
For some good info on these ideas, check out the authors I mentioned in the other post, as well as Ludwig von Mises, John Locke, and Ayn Rand.
Cato is to the right. Cato promotes free market (i.e., classical) liberalism. Main stream conservatism, otherwise known as neoconservatism, is a mish-mash of collectivism with some vague lip-service to (classical) liberalism thrown in. Have a look at some of the writings by F.A. Hayek, Milton Friedman, et al. These are your right-wingers. Compare these writings to the writings of Irving Kristol, who started the neoconservative movement. They are ideologically incompatible.
I love the idea of a [well-done] Star Wars television series, but this has to be one of the most boring timeframes they could have chosen. On the other hand, if they had announced a TV series that would explore the time of the Sith, that would have been cool.
I used to keep original copies of CDs in a case inside my car, but after a period of 6-8 months, they would inevitably become scratched beyond recoverable usage. So I started ripping them, keeping the originals on the shelf, and burning throwaway copies as I needed them. Now that I have a sound in port on my stereo, I just plug in the mp3 player and don't even bother with CDs anymore.
When you lie about something that could easily be true, and the person you're lieing about (the Chinese government) is unreliable, then people will oftentimes believe you. Granted, it is irresponsible to assume that something is true without proper verification, but that is the real "point" here, and isn't really related to "free speech."
Many phones have a "reserve battery", so even if you remove your battery (and/or if your battery is dead), IIRC, the phone can still access certain features such as emergency dialing.
Am I the only one who saw "Preserved Doo-doo bones" and thought, "What kind of horrific creature has excrement so large that it needs its own internal bone structure?"
80-100 years from now, there will have never been a war on terror. We will be at war with East Asia, and we will have always been at war with East Asia. Long live BB!
I called and ordered a pizza for delivery last night. Do they get a cut?
I checked my bank balance and paid a couple bills this weekend. Do they get a transaction fee?
I do work from home some days. Do I need to give them a portion of my pay when I do that?
Hell yes I do, hell yes I do, and hell yes you should.
The linguistic "problem" you mention seems to extend further than grammar, logic, and even semantics. People with such language problems cannot organize their writing and speech because they cannot organize their thoughts, and they cannot organize their thoughts because their "mental map" does not correspond structurally (or symbolically) to the "actual terrain" of the world they occupy. Put another way, creatures that assume "fact" will inevitably think in fallacious ways, and will inevitably view things from an absolute rather than a relational point of view. The great minds that drive every revolution in our thinking appear to employ a sort of genius because they do not "take things for granted," and analyze relationships within phenomena as far as they can.
For a more in-depth view of this problem as taken from a linguistic standpoint, check out Science and Sanity, by Alfred Korzybski.
Given that inflation rate in the U.S. since September has risen to 4.7%, a pay raise of 3.2% this year would be tantamount to a pay cut. A subject of further worry should be the price of diesel, which has lately risen to ~$3.20, a price increase that has yet to trickle down and fully effect the cost of consumer goods. If this price increase reflects a permanent change, expect core inflation to rise even further.
Linux people tend to know other Linux people. In these usability tests, we selected test subjects who were experienced with Windows, but who had never heard of Linux, and asked them to perform basic tasks using the Linux desktop.
Might this only result in the Linux desktop becoming more like Windows?
This fraud will go away not because people will suddenly get smart and quit responding to phishing e-mails, because California has new criminal penalties for phishing, or because ISPs will recognize and delete the e-mails. It will go away because the information a criminal can get from a phishing attack won't be enough for him to commit fraud -- because the companies won't stand for all those losses.
What's wrong with "all of the above?" It would seem to me that a multi-pronged attack to the problem would be best, because I really don't see how "just" holding the financial institutions responsible will make the problem disappear completely. Scammers are creative, after all, and the people who fall for their scams can be pretty friggin' dumb.
This is why the movie industry is going down the tubes. They're making a movie about a bloody video game, one that's basically a bug-shoot from start to end. If this is the kind of thing that gets the big bucks for movie rights, then the industry's loss of imagination has doomed them.
We'll see how doomed they are when the game's fans all over the country pay money to see it. It's not just that the industry is uncreative. There's a definite market for garbage.
I think a lot of us tend to equate happiness with "pleasure" of some kind, which might be the wrong way to look at it. Think of drug addiction: eventually, you need the drug not to feel good, but to feel "normal." The "good feeling" always goes away, and the more you keep looking for it, the harder it gets to hold onto it. I think it might be fair to say that this idea of happiness is really a species of suffering.
Serenity, on the other hand, stays with you. When you stop looking for happiness, you'll have it.:)
Being a novelist and being right are not mutually exclusive.
So collectivist nerds can sit and giggle self-contentedly to themselves when MS looks bad.

*Ahem* Case in point: Myspace. It is one of the most sluggish, kludgy, and ugly websites I have ever seen, but it is also one of the most successful.

Enough with the anti-nuclear, environmentalist BS. Seriously, I am sick of this garbage.

Trolls would get a kick out of this, because they could not only piss of the users, they could terrify computers responding to the pissed-off users.
It's about unity, man! Unity!

I win!
...but then again, why must God be unknowable or even mysterious? Maybe we're just getting closer.
