So I guess no one would do it then? Oh wait, people do things all the time that are EXPENSIVE, POINTLESS, AND STUPID. From the drug dealers I know, I wouldn't put anything past a couple them. They'd dilute it with urine if they thought it would make them more money.
Yeah until you have a bad trip. Then 5 years later you're driving along the interstate with your family and you swerve off the road to avoid the Elephant in the roadway that really isn't there. Great fun.
TV ads work, even in an age of remotes and Tivos, because TV is a passive medium.
After reading this, I thought seriously for a moment. I can't think of any occasion in the past, say 5 years, where I've watched TV with someone else, and they didn't immediately change the channel when it went to commerical. In fact, most people I know watch 2 or 3 shows at once.
They've always run a deficit. That's why the federal government always has to give the states money. Also, there is no federal unemployment tax, so all that money does come from the general fund.
It is an unemployment tax. Just because it's not what you think of as being a common tax (income, sales, etc) doesn't mean it's not a tax. In fact, in my state, it's called exactly that.
Oh, and when is the last time the welfare system came out ahead? If you don't think that some money from the general fund doesn't go there, you're delusional.
Some people just excrete more than others. I have a friend that could use my mouse for an hour it would be covered with this dark grey gunk. I use it for weeks and its still clean. I probably wash my hands more than him, but not much. His hands are cold and clammy. Mine are dry to the touch. Personally, it digusts me, but you can't fight genetics.
Yeah and everyone raves about the wonderful health insurance in socialist Europe as opposed to the US.
I pay $10 a month for health and dental. My employer pays the rest. It is a very good health plan, I almost never have to pay anything (free checkups, free dental exams, blah, blah). And I can select any doctor I want, which in this town many times means I can get in the same day. I laugh when I watch C-SPAN of legislatures in Europe complaining about the huge backlogs in health services.
Not only is it an unpopular statement, it is completely wrong. Ever heard of a "local exploit"? Not all programs run with the permissions of the user that executed them.
I have a friend that has a checking account with a debit card. He writes checks, but doesn't keep track of them. He always assumes his ATM balance is what he can spend. Yes, he is an extreme dumbass, but he seems to get by. His bank loves him (overdraft fees).
I am a Unix guru of sorts, as I administer Linux clusters, some Irix machines, a few Solaris machines, and whatever else comes my way at the University. I just don't see how it is satisfying using kill -9 as opposed to using a graphical interface. Either way, it's a signal that something went wrong, and what can be satisfying about that (masochists aside)?
(PS Yes, that's what happens after getting only a few hours a sleep this week.)
I just watched the local news where they showed the federal attorney indicted a bunch of people on tax fraud and settled a few others with significant penalties. A coincidence, no doubt?
how little things have changed for him in the last 10 years
The same thing can be said for Hurd!

Thanks for your wonderful bit of insight.
Thanks for contributing that wonderful bit anecdotal evidence. I guess since you've never had bad trip, no one can. Thanks again.

I bought a Pismo 2 years ago

Thanks for the correction. That must be one of those that my accountant doesn't bother to tell me about.

This askslashdot is such an obvious troll, I can't believe the editors posted it!

I thought no one would fall for it. You just got trolled, smartass!
The Lion King is a cartoon, not a movie. Movies are moving pictures, not animations.

Care to say what state you live in?

Of course! What fun is receiving mail if it doesn't have money in it?!
feels more powerful and closer to the system
It's strange that you want to get the feeling of being more powerful from an operating system utility. You must be quite powerless in real life.

What's wrong with the Windows Task Manager? It has worked flawlessly every time I've had to kill IE (which is usually do to the Acrobat plugin).
Slashdot because it is after all a community run information site
Not hardly. It is owned by a corporation with publicly traded stock, and yes, people do get paid to do this. Quite a bit, I'd imagine.
Exactly. There are a lot more economic costs than just the money that leaves your pocket.
