And how much Corporate and private university R&D is funded by government grants from organizations like the NIH and the NSF? I would say quite a bit. I'm not holding my breath for downloadable content.

Hell, I own a PS3 and I still don't trust the data I store on the hard drive. There's no backup! I'd rather have the physical copy of the disk. My electronic stuff is backed up on my linux server with RAID 1 and serves as a media server to the PS3 anyways. I don't use that hard drive.

My point is that even if HD content gets to the downloadable stage, without reliable data backup I think a lot of people will see it as just a novelty in the beginning. It'll take years for it to catch up with the physical medium. So, figure 5 years at least to upgrade the network, and 5 years to stabilize, you're looking at 10 years for agressive progress at least.

I think you just did say it's justified - you're saying they're not the same thing. I would say that bombings in general end lives and thus are the same thing. You argue the ends justify the means. That's like saying it's okay that you murder a homeless person versus murdering a police officer - something that many states in the US agree with, by the way. It's a capital crime to kill a police officer. It's not always a capital crime to kill a homeless person. I would argue that in both cases a human being is dead and it doesn't matter who they are. Killing someone is not justifiable in any situation.

However, I don't agree with this comment:

but consoles aren't the place to be looking for good FPS multiplayer gaming anyways.

I think that Xbox Live really set the bar in this last gen and you can see games like Warhawk (split screen multiplayer on a dedicated server) set the bar this gen. Matchmaking and dedicated servers really are going to become a staple this time around, and I don't think that the PC can claim this as much anymore. Especially now that UT3 supports mouse and keyboard on PS3 and most likely will do so for 360 as well.

The original Halo really kind of pushed things ahead when it was originally released for multiplayer on a console. I expect that it should do so in this gen as well.

Oh, and I'm sick and tired of the 8 hour FPS games. I want 20 hours minimum. That's a game. 8 hours is too short for entertainment value.

Everything they put out for the PSP had bugs (two Maddens, NCAA Football, Sims 2), and now bugs on HL for the PS3. I've decided that EA couldn't code themselves out of a black box.

Fault lays about 90% on EA and about 10% on Valve for trusting EA's coders. If this actually is the case, then it definitely will tarnish Valve's reputation which has been pretty good (barring initial Steam issues) to this point.

Combine that with the fact that the PS3 is outselling the 360 in Japan, and it just doubled the 360's sales for last week (less than a month after the Halo 3 release) and even beat the Wii, and I'd say it's too early to put a death knell in the PS3 for this holiday season. The GUI builder doesn't really let you modify the structure of the code that much (which makes sense since it's automated) so you end up with this huuuuge initialization function and crazy callback setups that really don't scale well at all. It's nice if you're building a small front end, but for complex GUIs or for MVC it gets a bit hairy and hard to manage, especially with code control and multiple developers.
