  1. Interesting... on Why Is Connectivity So Cheap In Stockholm? · · Score: 5, Interesting

My first thought was that because the city owns the entire network, much of the reason for the low cost is self-explanatory. But then I imagined if a similar arrangement were formed in the US, I would be extremely surprised if the same prices were attained. Local governments would likely see this as a source of income and either charge a similar rate to competitors, or possibly undercut their neighbors by a narrow margin in order to appear generous and possibly gain a few extra votes for the incumbents. Does anybody know more particulars of this arrangement and local laws in the area? Is the portion of the Stockholm government that runs this program have any sort of "no-profit" legislation?

I agree with the parent. If you don't believe we are primitive, look at what's going on in the Gulf Coast, esp. New Orleans. People killing each other over insignificant things like a single portion of food, or a bag of ice. Technologically speaking, we've come a long way in the last 30,000 years, but psychologically, we are still primitave in many ways, and our instincts have not caught up with the modern world. The world has been "modern" for a short period of time, and it will be many generations before our instincts adapt to the new threats of the world. Why are people scared of spiders, but not electrical outlets? Because for many generations in the past, people who would stay away from spiders were more likely to survive and pass on their genes. Our society has not been around long enough to pass on instinctual fear of electrical outlets. On the opposite side of the coin, we have many instinctual hunter-gatherer tendencies that are no longer relevent in today's American society. Many times, they do not emerge until some event enacts great stress on an individual.

The difference is the risk. NASA, being a government orginization, needs to take every measure -- no matter how costly -- to protect human life. If NASA makes too many screw-ups, it would likely receive huge budget cuts (or maybe be dismantled completely), and tremendous opposition from the general public. Rutan, SpaceshipONE, crew, and investors on the other hand, were knowingly taking risks. Taxpayers aren't going to be pissed if Rutan blows himself up, because they didn't pay billions of dollars for him to do it. Investors won't even be all that upset, since they would have known they were taking a risk in the first place.

And a very cold winter in Northern Nevada. The local news station announced that we just had the Coldest January on record, most days were more than ten degrees (f) below average. Besides, why doesn't anybody mention that if you look at the historical cycles of earth, we are actually currently exiting from an ice age? Of course its going to be getting warmer! And even at that, the change in worldwide mean temperate is so slight, it's been increasing by well under a tenth of one degree (f) per year on average!

There is absolutely no proof that humans have had any effect on global warming. All it is is theories which crackpot scientists have come up with to get funding for their research, and the media has sensationalized and run away with because it gets ratings.

Beyond that, you could probably argue that we are emitting LESS greenhouse gasses than the earth is used to getting. How many forests would have burned uncontrolled that we feel we need to 'save the planet' by putting out? A forest fire puts far more greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere than the controlled emissions of many thousands of factories and powerplants.

Yes, pollution is certainly an issue, but I would be a whole lot more concerned about what chemicals you're getting in your drinking water and what effect they're going ot have on your body than the slight increase in the earth's temperate, which is likely a natural cycle anyway.

We've only had an accuate measurement of worldwide temperatures for roughly a half century! How in the heck can we be as presumptous to act as if we know how the world functions? It could even be that attempting to stop global warming leads to our doom, instead of allowing it to continue unchecked. I think we humans are far too stupid to attempt to fix something with the earth that we're not even sure if is something wrong.
