The coolest thing I learned about the VLT is that it uses a laser to excite sodium particles 90km up in the atmosphere which creates a very faint 'star' at a very well-known distance. This reference point is used to make tiny adjustments to the mirrors to correct for atmospheric turbulence. These telescopes are not continents apart, they are all at the Paranal observatory in Chile. The light from each telescope is routed underground through equal-length tunnels to a central point to make one GIANT image. From wikipedia, "when all the telescopes are combined, the facility can achieve an angular resolution of about 0.001 arc-second. This is equivalent to roughly two metres at the distance of the Moon."

There's no laws restricting slanderous advertising, for one thing. The Conservatives destroyed the Liberals with attack ads before the last election before there was even going to be one. They were even calling voters individually in key ridings, giving them the wrong address to go to vote the day before the election.

Canada's system would work if parties were able to work together. The right wing extremism of the 'Harper Government' makes that impossible. They've managed to scare voters into thinking it will never be possible, so they'd better just give them a majority. Once that happens the just put up a stone wall to anyone that disagrees and go on with their retarded agenda. I don't think you can say we're worse off than Americans but it's a closer race than most think

I just caught up on this at http://freemarc.ca/group/freemarcca/marc-emery-latest-news

The US District Attorney arranged a plea deal in January 2008 that would allow Marc to serve his time in Canada, as long as the Conservative government laid charges here in Canada, but the government refused.

Assuming that's true, and Marc really couldn't get charged even under Harper (I'm sure whatever Marc was charged with is a law he'd support), yet we'll aid foreign police with an investigation and extradition for the same offense... that's just fucked up!

This reminds me of the case of Marc Emery. He's a Canadian currently serving 5 years in the US for selling marijuana seeds on the internet. It's not illegal in Canada and Health Canada was even sending patients to his site to buy seeds. The documentary 'The Union' likened it to a Canadian buying a handgun online and then the Colt company being charged instead of the person importing illegal firearms.
