It would really be nice. Look what came out of the Netscape product. Mozilla, Firefox, Thunderbird. I liked Winamp on my Windows boxes as it did something well and it worked.

I am in the 40+ range and I agree. I also go out at times to venues that have live local bands playing and I enjoy their music a lot better than the packaged garbage the big companies try to get me to buy. These are not always the R&B & classic rock, but, bleeding edge bands and music. I don't always like the music, but, it is not boring. Also, their CDs are MUCH cheaper than the ones in the store and I know where the money is going to!

Probably not as crazy as you think. I keep telling friends and family that MS should use the Linux Kernel as the basis of their software and then build the user interface and create hooks for their office apps. Simplify their development of a new OS and effectively outsources the costs to everyone but them.

    3. Get their input on what type of artwork should be hanging.

    4. I agree on the flourescent lighting. It is a major pain for me. I am lucky in that I have a window seat with blinds so I don't have to depend on that ugly lighting. I also have a small incandescent light off to the side. Eventually I will be picking up a full spectrum bulb for it.

    5. For the more creative types have white boards as part of one of their walls. I have one in my cubicle and it is great when I have a few people over for a brain storming session.

    6. Set the expectations on what is acceptable for decorating your own cubicle. Just set simple broad guidlines.

    7. Place the coat closet and shoe holder right beside the entry. If you have winters like we have here in Ottawa it is a royal mess and you don't want everyone to track snow, sand & salt all through the office.

    8. I large & comfortable couch near the entrance, if someone is waiting it is nice to have them comfortable. It is also nice when you do a DRP to crash & burn in the couch at 03:00 in the morning .

Furiously backing up my server to CD (15 so far) as it is still a Win98 box (Game machine also). I normally back up on a regular basis, but, with all of the patches it is real tempting to totally convert the server to Linux and to say the hell with games.

I inheirited 2,000+photos (current to 1890s) plus another 2,000-3,000 negatives. Scanning just 200 takes 157 megs at a moderate quality using JPG. I figure the photos will take about 2 gigs, negatives another 2-3 gigs and that is just photos of my family. I have plans to transfer some of the movies and that will chew up multi-gigs real fast before I do the digital editing.

When I get that done then there are the photos of of my wife's family at the same volume.

The kids and myself play a number of games (UT, Q3, WC3) and they measure in the hundreds of megs to install. (and yes each machine has a legit copy of each and every game).

Finally there is the fact that our main machine is also a server for my family (5 PC network) and is used to backup the other PC's which are then offloaded to CD/RW (a small user backup uses 5 CD/RW alone). I really can use a hard drive that is measured in the hundreds of gigs.

  10. Insane hours on Do Long Work Hours Affect Code Quality? · · Score: 1
I had a project where we had long & insane hours (2 months at 14+ hours, 6 to 7 days a week). First of all my boss actually was there most nights until 03:00 with us. She made sure we had meals and ordered out for us on a regular basis. On the status meetings she raised the possiblity of burnout of her team members due to the time we were working and the project time constraints. Most of all we were making some very stupid mistakes when we were regularly working over 12 hours per day.

In the short term you can do long hours, but, over time you get tired out and the number of errors climb up and the lines of code per hour drops.

At the end of the project the boss and her boss took the complete team out for lunch and invited our spouses and children to thank them for putting up with our long hours.

Make a hint to your boss that the stick approach may work.... just not for very long... maybe five minutes. Then everyone will say 'f' it and do only what is required without getting fired while doing a job search at another saner company that treats the employees as a valuable & scarce resource.

They did not care if I was running Linux, Win95 & Win98. I paid for the bandwidth and what I do with it was my business (as long as I did not violate their TOS).

I have not read the full thing about the cable company, but, it sounds like they want their competitors to get more business.

While I have not read the document the condition being over 18 seems to be reasonable. They are asking you to be bound to certain conditions (like a contract) before downloading the software. Here in Canada minors (under 18) for the most part cannot enter into binding agreements. It is conceivable that if they did not, a minor could download the software and then do anything they wanted with it and being a minor get away with it with only a slap (with a wet noodle) on the wrist by our legal system.
