Actually it is funny that you mention trends. From what my science teacher taught me the earth has been around for billions of years. So saying 150 years is a trend is laughable, try using a trend that is billions of years old, which I will outline below. My science teacher taught me that when dinosaurs where on the planet the earth was very warm, possibly warmer than it is now. Then it got really cold, the ice age. Now it is getting warm again. So the trend over billions of years is for the earth to get really warm and then really cold and then warm again and then cold over and over. So it seems to me that the earth is in a warming period before it starts another cooling period. And I assume that when it does start the cooling period the same "End of the World" types will be complaining that it is all our fault and we need to give more money to the UN so they can save the world from evil America.

I don't know about that, I am at uni and most of my classmates don't know the major distros of linux (or anything other than RH). When they see Ubuntu running on my laptop, they think I'm some sort of uber-gott. I quickly quash that theory, but suggest they check it out, as I hand them a livecd. So no, most of the guys who suggest that theory here are not only not CS degree holders, but many don't even have degrees [or in many cases, not yet] Yet remarkably, they manage to get it running, so I suppose your mum could as well, with a little guidance

I think we are talking about apples and oranges. I agree that the major distros of Linux have come along way, Ubuntu is my favorite. When I made my comment about needing a Computer Science degree I was referring to setting up a server that does automatic backups, file sharing, web hosting, and media streaming. I think that goes beyond a standard install of Linux. However, I could be wrong maybe the standard install of Ubuntu comes setup to do all those things and I just have not seen them.

Sorry chap, don't trust me mum to not call me on every screen and ask questions. Perhaps your mum is a bit more technically inclined?

Not really, my mom has called me to find out how to add a shortcut to her desktop, but if I told her to skip everything and just click next on every screen she would do it.

Actually I am not new around here. I understand that it is possible to setup something similar to what Windows Home Sever (WHS) offers, but you almost have to have a degree in Computer Science to do it. I would be very comfortable telling my mom how to install Windows WHS because it is so easy. It really takes only 2 steps:

    1. Put in the server install disk and answer very basic questions, the questions are so easy to answer that the recommended choices are already chosen and you could just hit next. You this step completely if you purchase a pre-built system, which most people will do.
    2. Put the connector disk into each client computer and answer the questions.

She would now have a fully functional and automatic backup solution. If one of her computers ever crashed she just needs to boot to the supplied recovery CD and select which backup she wants to restore and in about 20 minutes her computer is up and running.

Getting your files online is also a piece of cake. If your router supports UPnP Windows Home Server will automatically configure it. All you have to do is choose the subdomain you want to use with the Microsoft provided homeserver.com TLD, everything is served right off your server.

Another cool feature of Windows Home Server is the way it handles storage. No matter how many physical drives you have in the server they all show up as one drive, even external storage functions the same way. This means you don't have to worry about managing multiple drives, where the data is stored, and you never have to worry about running out of space, just pop in another drive or add an external drive and WHS takes care of everything else. You can also choose to have your files duplicated, which puts them on more than one physical drive so that if one drive fails you don't loose your data. Also, the backups will never backup the same file twice, even if it is on more than one computer. If there are differences it only backs up the differences and on the cluster level so it is extremely efficient with storage space.

There is a ton more and you can read my review to see it all.

    I second that suggestion.

I just completed a very extensive review of both the hardware and software for Windows Home Server. It is a fantastic backup solution and you can build a machine for very little cost. Not only do you get a great backup solution, but you also get a lot more. Windows Home server has a built in web server that will host all your files online for free. From the website you can also Remote desktop into any of your Windows boxes that support remote desktop. You can also stream all your media content from the Home server to any machine on your network. There are some problems with the Media Streaming, hopefully those will be fixed. Last but not least you have the ability to use add-ins which can add tons of extra functionality.

The biggest limitation of Windows Home Server is that it will not backup anything but Windows machines, but that does not mean someone won't write an add-in that allows other operating systems to be backed up.

  13. Who would you recommend? on Dell XPS 'Gaming' PC Review · · Score: 1

I consider myself to be fairly competent when it comes to computers. I have a bachelor in computer science and I work all day at a job where I program web applications. I even run my own little review website on the side.

I tried building my own machine a couple years back, but it was a complete disaster. I have had nothing but hardware conflicts from day one. I used name brand equipment, but I did not, and still do not, have the time to research each product to see if it is compatible with every other product. I choose what, at the time, was considered top of the line, AMD Athlon 1400+ processor, ASUS motherboard, Radeon 9800 pro graphics card and a sound blaster sound card. There is just something there that does not work well. I get a blue screen of death at least once a week; even when the computer is idle it will sometimes lock up. I have had to stop playing games on it completely because it crashes more when I do. I FDISK the hard drive at least once every 6 months so that I make sure I don't have any stuff on it that may be causing problems. I run Norton Antivirus and ZoneAlarm Pro so that I can keep viruses and unwanted people off my system.

So after all that trouble you cannot blame me for not wanting to do it again. I just want something that works the first time. No I am not going to switch to a Mac. I have crashed just as many Macs as I have PCs.

I like many others would like to purchase a system which is already configured to work correctly. So if Dell is so bad, who would you recommend? I was planning on purchasing a XPS 600 with Dual NVIDIA 7800 GTX cards, Dual core Pentium chip, 20" LCD monitor and such. That was all going to cost less then $3500. Everywhere else I look, a setup like that is closer to $4000 or more. Just so you know I have checked Gateway, Velocity Micro, Alienware, and Overdrive PC.

I would like to get the low prices that Dell offers but still get a good system. I know Dell does not sell AMD but I would prefer an AMD processor because it seems like they are doing better then Intel.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a company that can provide all this and next day on site service for the price that Dell offers? Maybe that is too much to ask.

I run a review site http://www.justechn.com/. I have to admit that I got into it at first because I wanted the free stuff. But in order to get companies to send me stuff I had to prove to them that I could write a fairly decent review. So I started by reviewing stuff I already had around the house. I am not the best reviewer and I sometimes miss things. This is not my primary source of income so I only have a limited amount of time to spend on the reviews (hence I don't have a ton of reviews).

I find that I am concerned about my reputation more than I am about pleasing the company. I want to continue this hobby and if I get a bad reputation then no one will visit my site and I will not get any more products to review. I am a fairly positive person so I try and reflect that in my reviews but if I find something that I don't like I definitely point it out. I also have a forum and a topic for each review so people can make comments about the review. I welcome the feedback and would love to know how I can improve my reviews. If someone has had a completely different experience with a product that I reviewed I welcome there comments.

I am Mormon and I have been all my life. My family favored "rook cards" but we also liked to play solitaire and other games that are better with face cards. I think the face cards controversy came from a book that was published along time ago by Bruce R. McKonkie called "Mormon Doctrine". Keep in mind that even though this man attained high position in the church this book was never accepted as official doctrine.

    ************

    CARD PLAYING

See Apostasy, Gambling, Recreation. President Joseph F. Smith has stated the position of the Church with reference to card playing in these words: "Card playing is an excessive pleasure; it is intoxicating and, therefore, in the nature of a vice. It is generally the companion of the cigarette and the wine glass, and the latter lead to the poolroom and the gambling hall... Few indulge frequently in card playing in whose lives it does not become a ruling passion... A deck of cards in the hands of a faithful servant of God is a satire upon religion... Those who thus indulge are not fit to administer in sacred ordinances... The bishops are charged with the responsibility for the evil, and it is their duty to see that it is abolished... No man who is addicted to card playing shall be called to act as a ward teacher; such men cannot be consistent advocates of that which they do not themselves practice.

"The card table has been the scene of too many quarrels, the birthplace of too many hatreds, the occasion of too many murders to admit one word of justification for the lying, cheating spirit which it too often engenders in the hearts of its devotees...

"Card playing is a game of chance, and because it is a game of chance it has its tricks. It encourages tricks; its devotees measure their success at the table by their ability through devious and dark ways to win. It creates a spirit of cunning and devises hidden and secret means, and cheating at cards is almost synonymous with playing at cards." (Gospel Doctrine, 5th ed., pp. 328-332.)

Members of the Church should not belong to bridge or other type of card clubs, and they should neither play cards nor have them in their homes. By cards is meant, of course, the spotted face cards used by gamblers. To the extent that church members play cards they are out of harmony with their inspired leaders. Innocent non-gambling games played with other types of cards, except for the waste of time in many instances, are not objectionable.

    ************

So the key to this is not the cards themselves but the feelings, actions and attitudes that sometimes accompany the cards.
