I had a 486/66 DX2 with 24MB RAM, and MPG123 just couldn't do it, not even in just console mode. It "skipped" horribly just playing back only one channel. This is with RH 6.2.

Actually there's a make option for it: make linux-i486 which optomizes the code for 486 only.

I'm using Debian 2.2r2 with mpg123-0.59r but the option should work for any version of linux. Like I said - mine works even under X. Now granted when you do _anything_ but play .mp3's with it there is some skip but if you're using a 486 to play .mp3's then you shouldn't be using it for anything else at the time. ;-)

Sun has always had a very nasty habit of dropping old hardware compatibility with new versions of their OS.

Of course is a pity RedHat no longer support SPARC, but like someone already said, you have many other distros with SPARC support, and in my opinion better than RedHat.

Both true and false depending on which OS distro you side with. For my money NetBSD seems to run much faster than Linux on older SPARC hardware and Debian has broken pieces but still holds together despite all.

Linux in general is probably more "app" compatible than most BSD based 'nix. (Caveat: That last statement may not be true now, I haven't looked recently - no flamebait meant.)

Everyone does good stuff and bad stuff.

So because everyone does bad stuff we should not complain at all?

Not exactly true my friend. I bitch about small companies that overcharge me - and you should too. An all too common problem in trying to predict future trends is falling for the fallacy of taking trends to their logical extreme. In this case, you take the trend that people are showing more drone like behavior and extending it to the extreme that we will all become drones.

Point taken however I think this point in history is far more dangerous than past ones because of the rate at which information (or in this case disinformation) flows. It's much harder to fight something that everybody "knows" is true than something that everybody hasn't heard of yet. That's the danger of the media. Most people out there (a generalization I know) watch the news and take it hook, line, and sinker to be the truth. Unfortunate but also very very real.

Historically trends are cyclical. Stretches of group think are followed by stretches of individualistic rebellion. Look at what's happening right now. We see countless protests being staged by people who are fet up with corporatism and globalization. Are these people becoming drones?

No they are not but I think that they are also too small in number. Corporate America(tm) has a very loud voice - it's going to take a lot of people to drown it out. As for historical trends - you are correct. But do you want to wait that long to get your freedoms back?

I think you are way underestimating the desire to be an individual in human beings. There is a desire to be part of a community and to identify with others, but there is also an ego driven desire to distinguish yourself from the crowd.

I do not count the spirit of the individual out but I also am more pessimistic about the strength of Corporate America(TM). There's a lot of things you can do with large amounts of money to make sure the truth does not get told and I think some of those things are being put in place as we speak.

That's a paranoid asumption. To have people become drones you would have to simultaneously have to have them indoctrinated and then prevented from getting any competing information at all. That isn't the case here.

Hmmm... not to flamebait here but have you even been paying attention to what's been going on in society? Each day we lose more and more true information due to incorrect or purposefully distorted reporting from the media. Just look around you. Anyone who does not take the time to "dig" for the truth ends up believing everything the media says. The media is DESIGNED that way. It may not have been at first but it is now.

What freedoms are you loosing? These companies are just excercising their freedom to advertise with their money to a school that accepts them. If you don't want to have to access them then by all means pay for an ad free service. Until then deal with the ads like most people ignore them.

The freedom that is slowly being lost here is the freedom of choice. I havn't been a student for some time yet I feel that If I had had to sit through a repetitive stream of ads every day I would have ended up quite a different person. As for the "freedom to advertise" that's all very well but consider this: 1) A fair amount of students don't have a lot of regular money to pay for an ad-free service and are thus stuck with the barrage of ads that come with the free service. 2)Ignoring the ads is possible now but how about a week from now? A month? A year? At some point there will almost certainly be some development on free services that require you to click through an ad before being able to do something with the service. It might not be big at first but you can bet, like any advertising, it will increase with time.

I don't think my viewpoint is all that paranoid. We're living in a society run by big corporate interests. Period. We can change that but not without a lot of hard work and not without a fight.

I used to respect marketing people back when marketing meant
    informing people about our product

beat people into submission with ads for our product.

To paraphrase what someone else said earlier on this thread we're watching the decline of our society back into the mud because of corporatism. If left unchecked you can be assured that the new "crop" of people will be drones within a very short time.

How short a time depends on how badly we fight for our freedoms while sinking.

My mother and I were watching that film on PBS one night and trying throughout the whole film to figure out which part he was playing. We finally decided that the only part that could be him - because the film was so old - was the artful dodger. We were totally shocked to find out that he played Fagan! We never thought he was that old or that accomplished by that time. On top of it he was incredibly good even then - at the age of 34 - at taking on a role. AFAIAC anything he did was seamless! No matter what role he played he took the mantle of the part and wrapped it around himself until only a very sharp person could tell he was not who he pretended to be. It was totally amazing to watch him be someone else completely and be someone else so different between each film he did.
