  1. Target Audience? on Final PS3 Launch List Shows 13 Games For America · · Score: 1

I find it interesting that of the 13 games up there, 6 are sports titles (I consider racing a sports genre, especially in terms of Ridge Racer) and 2 FPSes. So the launch list seems to target sports fans and action gamers...which is not where I'd expect to find the super-hardcore gamers or audio/videophiles who are going to be able or willing to front the costs. I don't see a game there that'll trip the Drooling Rich Fanboy alarms to the $600 range.

  2. As someone who does these... on Game Previews Just Game Marketing? · · Score: 1

I hate doing previews. It's a moral issue, I guess--if I'm holding in my hand something extremely beta, not remotely a release candidate, but so primitive that it's virtually unplayable, do I ransack it in the name of "objectivity", or do I take it as what it is and tell readers what I see now and what could possibly come from it, best case scenario? I've called a couple of previews as bad with no good future, but usually it's a case of "eh, it's bad now, but it's got no release date and it could get better".

It's unfair to even bother with previews unless you're looking at a release candidate or finalized product, and you're harping it for an upcoming review in the next issue. It really serves no purpose other than a free spat of advertising, and the four-colour glossy ad on the next page does that better.

  3. Disruption? Moot point. on Time Travelers' Convention · · Score: 1

I'm a firm supporter of the parallel time theory. To elabourate:

Every possible instance of history has happened and is happening, simulatenously and infinitely. It's like billions and billions of points, forking from each other with motion of every molecule.

    1) You can't disrupt it, because any possible scenario is already being applied somewhere. Even if you change things, you've simply moved current events to an alternate path--the original one is still progressing transparently.

    2) You can't eliminate your own future or past, because your instance of "you" is created by a series of events that will continue to exist. When you go forward again, you'll wind up right back where you left.

Sure, it's full of holes. Science fiction (or semi-fact or hypothesis or whatever) is like that. Putting stock in theory derived primarily from a Christopher Lloyd movie is futile.

  4. Well... on Star Trek: Enterprise Reactions? · · Score: 1

I wouldn't say it SUCKED, compared against the other sort of dribble the UPN runs. And yes, that includes VOYAGER. It's not perfect, but how could Star Trek without Roddenbury ever be perfect, huh? It smacks of The Phantom Menace--doubling back to establish background, and feeling awkward cuz we already KNOW where it's going.

Of course, I liked BATTLEFIELD EARTH, so those of you with melons and tomatoes can feel free to reel back and let 'er rip.

  5. Ooogy Scenario on Download 600MB From The EU -- For A Demo? · · Score: 1

This is slightly tragic. There -was- a US serv listed, but it sure as heck isn't hosting the file anymore. I'm getting it off 4Players, but Germany-To-US over a 56K dialup is going to take several days. This had damn well better be worth my time, considering the only reason I was signed up at all was cuz I got AO mixed up with Planetside...

  6. There's a Rule for this sorta thing on Sega Kills Off The Dreamcast · · Score: 1

It's a rule I live by, and it works nicely.

"I'll believe it when I see it."

I'd love to freak out and panic and go postal and all sorts of things just because I won't be able to get a console and play CHU CHU ROCKET or stare at Ulala's butt or whatever. But y'know, panic like that does no one any good.

Hell, for all it's worth, this could be little more than a marketing ploy. Create a little synthentic supply shortage, and watch demand go flying.

    Worked nicely for the PS2.

  7. What This Movie Did For America on The Battlefield Earth Contest · · Score: 1

I kinda liked this movie in the same way I liked GODZILLA--as a campy piece of pre-fab-crap.

But, it did a couple of good things, I think.

Primarily, it proved to Hollywood that folks won't swallow everything you throw at them just because it's big, flashy, and expensive.

Secondly...it kept John Travolta from trying to make another comedy. *whimper*

  8. Corel: Suckage In Action on Corel Linux coming Online - NOT · · Score: 1

I'm beta-testing Corel right this very second, and let me tell you, it's not even ready. There's bugs up in this distro like you wouldn't freakin' BELIEVE. From SVGALIB to X to GCC, things simply don't work, or work entirely wrong. I hope Corel understands that they'll never make a dent in the market if they don't betatest more.

It's nothing personal, not at all. I've given it a huge chance. But beta2 is not ready, unless some serrrrrrrious in-house action is going on.
