This could be the ultimate cure for geeks. Simply wear special plastic goggles that restrict vision (and hence computer access) if wearer does not go outside.
This sort of move aknowledges that MS is the standard and measure of other products. By pretending that MS lives up to their standards, they tacitly acknowledge that just the opposite is the norm, cementing their status of "Other". The humour of the taglines is derived from just this sense. I would be more impressed if they defined themselves as the standard, without reference to the real standard.
Note I am not saying MS is better by any means, but it is undeniable that through its ubiquity that other OS's must inevitably be compared to Widows.
Briefly, the idea is people give up some of their freedom in order to obtain the benefits of living in society. It is rather odd to see it applied to ads, though.
or is Linspire a really bad deal? I don't see any advantage over other desktop linux distos (Ubuntu, Fedora, etc.), or for that matter OSX or even Windows.
If you want it free, go with Ubuntu, If you want it cheap, go with Windows, and download freeware apps. It seems like Linspire users are paying just to use a second- rate distro.
For me, system responsiveness is my number one performance gripe. I hate to spend a lot of time waiting for the system to respond to mouse clicks, but I couldn't care less if it takes 70 seconds or 50 seconds to encode an mp3. As far as most ordinary users are concerned, multicore's effects upon UI responsiveness is more than worth it.
I concur. Math will always be about insight. The best math is simple and shows why the result is true. Most mathemeticians are unsatisfied by the four-colour proof because it does not satisfy these two conditions. Even if computers are eventually able to discover such proofs, mathematicians will still have to ask the computers to search for them. We must remember that problems like solving certain differential equations used to be difficult and involved, but now thanks to computers, we don't have to worry about them as much. The same will apply for very specialized results. The big theorems will still be up to humans to prove. Think of computer- assisted math as a kind of spellchecker or Googe suggest. Computers replacing mathematicians completely is about as far-off as computers replacing poets or historians.
The difference is that people are fundamentalists because they hold certain beliefs that they can change, and it is precisely these views that are objectionable. If you're black, however, you cannot change that (unless you're Micheal Jackson), and moreover it has nothing to do with the views you might hold or any other important qualities you might have.
Dear bostonsoxfan,
So is this the direction baseball is going now, to obscure concepts few people have practical application for. This is why over the last couple of years there has been a decline in people playing baseball because it is boring. And on top of it there is no real incentive at best they can get some prize few people(in the general populace) even care about.
Considering the number of DVDs in the wild compared to Laserdiscs, unlikely. They will become obsolete eventually, of course, but we will all still remember the days of watching movies on DVD.
In the case of the unfourtunately cancelled FOX series My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss, they have not delivered on their promise to make the unaired episodes avilable online. They had originally promised to do so in January, but their webisite http://fox.com/bigfat/ has not changed since then. This seems to indicate that there are some forces at work who are afraid of taking the plunge.
This case could represent the first step in delivering TV to a whole new audience (for instance, as a university student, I do not own (or want) a TV, so I only watch what I download).
Customers matter in the end, so if you want to see downloadable (or streamable or whatever) television, contact the people in charge:

In the end this allows Apple to sell their products for less and get rid or redundancy. Honestly, how many non- geeks benefit from having the option of a Firewire connection?
The real question: Is Apple backing away from AC adaptors?
Presumably, the clicker "bug" is actually a feature. If you accidently damage the screen, you can use it to navagate by sound. There are other problems with the firmware, such as making a slight static-like sound when the volume gets changed. It may be possible to revert to an earlier version by using the "ipod wizard" http://media.weblogsinc.com/common/videos/pt/ipodw izard.zip

would it pay for itself if one were to buy a cheaper computer (e.g. iBook or 12" PB)?

Anyone care to enlighten me?

Isn't that exactly what Overpeer is doing?
e-donkey. Incredible selection of math books in djvu format.

Set phasers for stun.
1)A one- buttoned couch
2)The iBook(-shelf assembly kit)
3)The iPad
...And then he was enlightend.
April fools' day is supposed to end at noon, at least where I live.
When will new computers ship with this preinstalled? I am considering getting a Powerbook soon, so I hope there will not be a long wait.
Maybe you would do well to be apprehended by the punctuation Nazis.
Note: I have no affiliation with Nazis and/or Republicans.

But you must pay royalties to the copyright holder(s).

I'd like to hear their definition of adware.
