My concern is that the rich countrys will implement this in a big way stand back and say look we have reduced greenhouse emmisions (which are blamed for global warming which has been measured by a rise in ocean temperature) but now the ocean is warming even faster cos we take too much cold water out so no one else should do this. As for windmills not stopping the wind if used heavily it will take energy from the wind just because it has no directly observable effect removing Gigawatts of enery from the atmosphere must have some effect somewhere. I'm not saying these are inherently bad ideas just that some caution needs to be used after all we humans have a history of moving problems rather than fixing them.

There is no incentive for consumers to reduce piracy as the DVD and CD prices will remain at the current as much as the market will pay prices. An example of this was years ago when CD burners were not available to the average file swapper, sony playstation 1 games that were on CD and impossible for the home user to copy were the most expensive while PC titles that could be cracked and copied much easier were close to half the cost.

Hell I don't even know when the new simpsons episodes are aired with channel 10 showing 1 or 2 new episodes then a heap of repeats in the same time slot only to have the new episodes turn up at a new time. Too be continued often means this was episode 1 we will show episode 2 in a private sitting held in a locked filing cabinet in a room of the basement with a sign on the door saying beware of the leopard. If the poor bleating networks got their act together and supplied a reliable quality service the downloading would not be an issue and could possibly be a good way of creating interest in new shows.

The problem with this is that most people who download TV are not going to be in that broadcast area. There was an article last week that showed that UK & Oz accounted for the biggest amount of TV show downloads with the US way behind. This was attributed to the fact that UK and Aussie networks do not show the new series sometimes until months after the us release. Friends in Australia was strung out for months of "friends favorites" etc repeats before the final episode was released. A simpsons season is often streched out by showing 1 or 2 new episodes then the next weeks a "classic". With this sort of treatment fans are going to download and have no simpathy for the local network losing its add revenue. Then there are the shows that just don't get to some areas even on cable. While a case can be made against downloading a movie that will be shown at the local cinema followed by DVD release, what about downloading a German or French local show to help learn the language when that show is broadcast freely to its target audience but will never be shown in the area the dowloader is from?
