This is why I think we should CBA some of this stuff with taxes or tarriffs. For example, lets say we value not using child labor at $X/widget. Then we should add of X to products who are made by employing child labor. Repeat this process for what we think is important to our society.
And if we can't isolate the issue to the company level, we aim at the country level. If your country doesn't like it, it can tax our goods back (not like we'd lose much to the applicable with our current trade deficits) or they can update their laws to more industrialized levels.
And to those screaming "protectionist" at their monitors - you are right. But if you don't that India and China are protectionist, I don't know how to help you. We are losing a game of prisoner's dilemma.
Wait a second - doesn't the government give out regular business licenses too? I.e. All businesses exist solely at the mercy of the government (and legislation)?
I know criticizing gov't is in vogue here and is typically warranted, but what exactly is your point here?
I was going to moderate this thread, but I had to reply to this.
Where do you think the Drudge report gets it's news? Do they send out their crack squad of reporters to investigate? NO. They are a news aggregator. All they do is point towards other peoples news.
The Drudge report is basically/. but with a conservative vs. linux bias. I'm not sure the tax free proposal is the way to go, but to say the Drudge Report and NO investigative reporting is the wave of the future seems a little ass-backwards.
She's easy to buy for for Christmas presents; I go to Goodwill and get empty bottles of high-price perfume, fill them with isopropyl alcohol, and give them to her as the real stuff. She can't tell that it isn't.)
Isn't that assuming you can't do something else with that time, like get your coffee / bathroom break / whatever? Not everything has to be done serially you know
Why would you need the GPL if there was no copyright on software? You could always grab a copy and make updates for yourself. Alright mods: which one of us is missing something?
This is not a typical/. idea, but I don't think a little conscription is the worst idea ever. Making people learn a little responsibility with real consequences (i.e. not like at school) might help our nation of increasing whiners grow up a bit
Somehow I'm surprised by the cynicism on/. (yeah I know I must be new here). I struggling to see how publishing his ideas and opening a dedicated feedback channel can be a bad thing.
Maybe he'll ignore the feedback - now you are right back were you started anyways. And by at least publishing his direction you can see where he was going. I mean, wasn't the last round of complaints about Obama is that he didn't commit anything to record? Now we find a way to complain about the answer.
I need a beer. Jeez
Seems like that is a good incentive to get people to go to school. I'm willing to bet that once those people complete additional schooling and begin earning more, that the incentive will be recouped through later taxes.
Remember that when you are making an investment, a lot of the cost is provided up front...
I wish he hid it up his bum so everyone would truly know what is happening to them as they went through security.
They'll be trying the existence of Manbearpig. Really, I'm serial! Emphasis mine
I always heard this as "cereal" and never considered it "serial." /. can even make southpark nerdier :) Kudos!

Sounds like HTML and CSS
Would you be able to post a link to the source? I'm genuinely interested in reading more
I'm willing to say /. is a pretty lonely place today (only half joking)

Add to that that sports are something you typically want to see live. Tivo doesn't make as much sense with sports as compared to comedies.

not according to Steve Jobs
funny, that's why your wife started having me come over
You seriously do this? That's just awful
Seems like people with good impulse control might go first

Yeah, that missing the internet thing really wiped them out... :)

Really? Me (and the rest of men) and you are very different people.
Next thing you'll say is that every time a girl opens her mouth that she's not lying. :)
How is that worse than the government machine that simply ignored you? The possibility someone might occasionally listen?

I'd imagine most /. readers are used to getting creme out of their keyboards
When I first saw your "I see your mistake" line I immediately thought of the Simpsons. "Someone flipped the evil switch"
