  1. Re:Cryptography? on New Pattern Found In Prime Numbers · · Score: 1

Could this have any applications there?

While public key cryptography does use a prime number in order to generate a shared secret key, this prime number is transmitted openly and assumed to be known by all attackers. Diffie-Hellman key exchange

The security of the protocol comes from the difficulty of solving the discrete logarithm problem, which has nothing to do with the prediction of prime numbers.

I'm unsure if your question was about the security of current cryptography (i.e. hacking), or development of new, more secure, cryptography algorithms. In the second case, the ability to help predict primes may help reduce the computing cost of encryption, if not decryption, though I doubt it will lead to any additional security.

A disclaimer, I am a computer programmer, but I have only a passing familiarity with the mathematics of cryptography.

  2. Re:You can do that in regular games on Non-Violent, Cooperative Games? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Yes, there are a few games that can be won without any violence at all, but they either wind up being too boring or too difficult. For instance, in Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magicka, there is a journal that keeps track of quests and kills and such, and it is entirely possible to beat the game with 0 kills.

Another game that can be beaten without violence is the original Fallout. I've always found it amusing that a game featuring such gratuitous violence (ever plant live dynamite in a kid's pocket?) can be won without a single kill. It's a different challenge to beat the game this way, rather than through violence. You need to rely heavily on your speech skill, and do all the quests you can that don't involve killing, as your main source of exp (killing people) is gone. Even the final boss (the Master) can be beaten without violence. There are 3 ways to beat him, through a straight firefight (fairly difficult to do), or sneak by him, find the computer controlling his base's reactor, hack it, and set it to meltdown, destroying the base, or, the third option, convince him that his plans won't work, that he is in fact hurting people. He sees the error of his ways, let's you go, and then commits suicide (I guess violence still ensues, even if you do not commit it).

  3. Re:Ogre! on Old Computer Game Covers - Collectible, Or Just Nostalgia? · · Score: 1

A few games still do this, in particular the "Collector's Edition" sets that are sometimes released in tandem with a normal edition. They're generally about $10 more, but are quite cool to have, usually.

For example, not too long ago, I got a Tabula Rasa Collector's Edition Set. It was packed with all kinds of goodies, like a full-color ~6x10 inch 120 page manual, labeled "AFS FIELD GUIDE", a bunch of maps of various in-game areas in a paper sleeve labeled "AFS CLASSIFIED", an authentic looking AFS Memo from a General British welcoming me to the AFS, a Tabula Rasa "Challenge Coin", a full-size poster, a Behind the Scenes DVD, a set of Tabula Rasa dog tags, and that's not even mentioning the in-game bonuses.

I believe someone already said this, but the reason most games don't come with that sort of thing is it's prohibitively expensive to have that kind of merchandise. Fortunately, a few companies still care about the gamer's experience, so decent collector's editions of some games are out there if you look for them, and are prepared to repay the extra $10 they spent putting cool stuff in the box.

Not to mention BioShock right around the corner. A lot of old favorites are being resurrected in the near future. The original Starcraft, Fallout 1 and 2, as well as System Shock 1 and 2, are some of the best games ever made, in my opinion anyway. Here's hoping these new incarnations live up to the old legacies, and that this isn't another Fallout Tactics.

Um... the Sony SIXAXIS controller does have six axes. There's the left analog stick, which has UP/DOWN, and LEFT/RIGHT. That's two axes so far. The right analog stick has another two axes, which makes four total so far. The L2 and R2 shoulder buttons on the controller are pressure sensitive, which means that each of those buttons is an axis. 2+2+1+1=6
