He didn't vilify eating kittens, just selling kitten burgers. Just because you don't consider them food, it doesn't mean that it's evil to sell them (as compared to cattle meat).
I don't know what you conisder 'western culture' but Horsemeat is quite normal food in a few European countries.
how exactly does a button make this not a phishing site? are u telling me bank of america has coders which can create buttons that have a greater level of power than the boys over in the ukraine or russia? cmon now...
from TFA: "Customers can also verify they are indeed at Bank of America's Web site by clicking on a SiteKey button. If they fail to see a secret image and phrase they had chosen earlier, they could be at a fake Web site and the target of a "phishing" scam."
Who said I was against reading? It's just not practical to have so much information in so many langauages crammed into a small sign or board. Had you suggested that we buy the guidebook, then you would have a point. I used to take a guide book with me on travel. Now I buy the same guide books in electronic format for my palm. There is no need to avert new technology. Sticking to the old ways is not always best. Though I guess the new gadget will turn out to be only eye candy, lots of multimedia and ads and you will be right.
BTW, I'm too old to be MTV generation, I grew up in a country without MTV and still don't recieve it. I can (and enjoy) read(ing) in 4 languages.
The problem isn't only in what drivers are available out of the box. The problem is also that the sweeping majority of the hardware you buy at the store come only with windows drivers and utilities.
It's not Linux' fault but it is certainly one main reason why it's not making headways in the desktop market.
What are you trying to debate? I didn't say we just shouldn't blame the companies, suck up and live with it. I said that we have to force them (by law) to not do it. You're trying to compare it to absolving murderers. If there was no law against murdering someone, then I can guarantee you that killing for robbery would be quite common. Heck it is common even with the law but then at least you can punish the person doing it instead of just calling him/her 'immoral'.
euh, what?
Do we just shout 'bad boy' at a murderer? No, we have laws against it. We shouldn't have to rely on the moral code of companies and then shout 'bad boys' at them when they don't live up to expectations.
That starts with teaching the Categorical Imperative [wikipedia.org] and that continues with offering people a choice of ethical policies they can uphold in their everyday decision making process.
I completely agree with you that that's a wonderful ethical system to live by. The problem that remains that many people know what's right and choose to do what's wrong. That's true especially if they know or think that they can get away with it.
ok, and the rest of my post (suggesting that we have laws for that) does not promote fixing the system? Did you read the whole post or just decided to read one sentence and reply ot it?
so what are you suggesting? People working at google should quit their jobs and walk out? What's the name of the little world you live in?
We have laws because we cannot trust people to make up their own moral code.
Thinking that it's governments responsibility to make moral rules is so stupid.
Thanks for the underhand insult.
I did not say that and you know it. All I said is that we cannot just expect companies to follow moral or ethical guidelines of their choosing because all they follow is the law. It is legal in china so that what they will do. If it was legal to 12 year old work 18 hours a day, they will do it (and I guess they might do in some parts of the worls) that's why we have laws against it.
Companies are there to make money not for moral or social values. I'm not saying that's a good thing but that's how the system works. If there is money to be made in China, they will play by their rules to get it.
If you think they should act otherwise, then you should get your government to make rules about that banning the companies from bending to Chinese will.
no matter how you turn it on papers to make it look better, the cost is already there. I doubt that Apple sells enough upgrades to cover the cost of developping their OS. So if the Software dep is running in the negative because they are 'selling' the os to the hardware dep for 0$ then Apple's profit margin will dip all the same. Granted the hardware dep will look like it's making more profits but it's only cosmetics.
because they don't have to pay MS their fee.
They still have to include OSX with the hardware and the price to develop that has to be factored in the profit margins that you mentioned.
Note that the author doesn't have the right to complain. People (companies?) are using the way he licenced it. The GP was giving an axample of why BSD style licences are bad for authors if they expect something (code) in return. Some company and other developpers might contribute back to BSD projects but that relies completely on their goodwill.
ok, let's take an example. Suppose the gimp was released under the BSD licence. Some company takes the code, pulls a magic wand and enhances it until it's the best app of its kind around and starts selling it for big bucks. What did the people who wrote the gimp get in return?

Where does it say that the Sitekey button will only be available after you answer the questions?
Just curious, why is selling kitten burger evil and calf burgers alright?

Just how much information can you cram in a sign? In how many languages? Do you really still live the same way your grandmother did?
Dip fish in batter, fry and serve with chips.
Now, can we please get back to improving the hotdog?

Sith apprentices are called younglings too??

How does ipod sales reflect on volume discount of intel processors? Does the ipod run on one?
embrace and extend is there for a bloody reason too!
...and that's fair enough. Each licence has its own goals and as long as you what you want, you can choose the one that fits best.

I was very insterested in your comment until I noticed that you used (insert your diety here) instead of the programmers firendly $diety
What exactly is the definition of 'open source'. Could you open code to a specific community and still call it open source?
