I would like to mention that the first free browser was from a commercial company and was intended to kill another business.
worth mentioning as well is the fact that the opera business is not dead. They just realised that giving the browser for free would increase their userbase and by extension other revenue streams.

" If you're so obsessed with "freedom" to rip your music into a format which nothing supports, Volkswagen isn't really expecting to get $20,000 from you for one of its cars. Knowing you, you wouldn't buy the car unless they agreed to give you the source code for the onboard computers and the complete schematics for every part down to the bare metal."
really? My whole music collection is in ogg and my car is a BMW. It's not an all or nothing deal. If VW or BMW want to sell me a car that would only srive on the roads of their choosing then I wouldn't buy it either. As it happens, they drive on the 'open standards' roads. he didn't ask for a player with schematics. he asked for a player that would play the music format of his choosing.
you were modded funny but on a serious note, what are the implication of copying the UI of a commercial application?

That is true. However using something because it's the lesser evil does not mean that you like it. The OP claimed that popularity of MS products stems from the fact that people like them.
the point is if the game is not challenging, then it's the designers' fault not the player. I don't have to guess why it isn't (too much power, too much money, I don't know what) and compensate for that myself. If the game is too easy, then it hasn't been well designed.
I haven't played D2. I wasn't trying to compare DS to it. I was just making a point that the game should be interesting by itself, not that the player s have to dumb themselves down to enjoy it.

wow, excellent advice! Let's not bother with develeopping good, challenging games anymore. Let's train the players to adjust their gameplay so that the game will last a bit longer. What did you use to do with in the old days when an arcade game was too easy? Will your hand/eye coordination to be worse? on second thought that might still work on some games nowadays
Isn't obscurity the only thing DRM relies for it to work? I mean it's already not hard to bypass existing 'closed' DRMs. How efficient an 'open' one will be?
" If there was going to be a removable hard drive anyway, I personally would opt to buy the cheap system and then get the hard drive addon without all the extraneous accessories that will be used sparingly."
Where I live, if I decide to buy the HD and the wireless controller, it would already cost more than 100$ so an extra 100$ for all the extras doesn't look too steep. On the other hand, the xbox does not feature on my to-buy list. I hope Sony comes up with a similar deal.
Amazing quantum leap!
We were talking about substandard console peripherals. Something that will probably break in a few months or maybe have a response lag. That does not mean we cannot make sure they are not a public hazard. You make it sound as if I said console periferals that give users electic shocks were alright. In any case it wouldn't be Microsoft's job to make sure that 3rd party periferals are safe to use (unless they want to display an 'approved' label or something similar).
"so the free market works, but only if you can control the nature of the participants."
You can say pretty much the same about democracy. Yes, let the people vote with their money and if they're stupid enough to buy the crappy product because they couldn't take the time to educate themselves about it before buying then it's their problem. We don't need benevolent dictators neither in politics nor in economics.
I remember having a few games on a single floppy then a few floppies were required for a single game, in came CDROMs, afterwards, a few CDROMs were needed for a single game. Now we have the DVDs. In a short while you'll need a few DVDs for a game and game will start coming on a HD-DVD sooner or later.
What is the relevance of the number of downloads? Someone might download it 4 times to install it at his 4 PC an another might download it once and install it on his company's 200 stations.
"Funny, for when I search for "computers" on Google, the Apple site is the very first link!!!!"
As weird as it might sound to you, brand value does not depend on the classification of a google search. Shocking, isn't it?
I wanted to use an exclamation mark in my post but apparently you used up all that's allowed for today.

Is that so? Would that be from all the IE users who've never changed their homepage or is there real interest in it?

actually that was only proof 'that not all 4-digit UIDs have grown up'

I've never played the game. Would shooting a civilian or leveling a civilian structure (if you can do such thing) land you in jail as well?

oh yeah Bliss. One of the reasons the foundation series would attract so many nerds (me included) if it ever hits the big screen :)
Great :) now we need an R.D.Venabili
I hope not! Otherwise it would be an awful waste of space.
With apologies to Carl Sagan.
