Actually, I don't miss the old hardware. I miss the simplicity of the software though. I've usually preferred to run "user-friendly" distros over the years (RH since 6.1, Debian, etc), but I find that the dependencies have gone nuts. Why do I have to have bluetooth installed with GNOME or Evolution (at least w/ 2.x, haven't checked G3)? Same with all kinds of insane font dependencies. Haven't been a fan of network manager. Pulse audio annoyed me when it came out, but has improved since then. Systemctl is my newest pet peeve. I miss having control over my system.
Also, I have been compiling custom kernels on Red Hat since Red Hat Linux 6.1 (both from RH's source and the vanilla kernel). Not had the issues that most people have.
I did that for a while on my old laptop, and found myself creating a script to switch to full desktop (I did FVWM -> KDE3) if I decided I wanted more...eye candy? Anyway, it was great for fast startup. (I also for a while had it auto-login to my fvwm setup).
The ten year old arguments still apply because, well, people are still using software that old. We have clients running IE6 on Windows 2K and XP (Federal gvt, in case you're wondering). Two years ago we still saw NT4 on occasion.
You didn't go to Capitol College, did you? They require microprocessors and assembly (M68K IIRC) for quite a bit of the majors (including some CS related ones).
Visit flea markets and computer shows. I bought my Macbook Pro for $200 at Hamfest (given, I bought a Core Duo one, so no Lion for me, but if I had gotten there sooner...oh well).
I can say the same thing about Windows 7 on an i5 Lenovo compared to my Macbook Pro 1,1. Well, the networking works on the Lenovo, but other then that...
Three is too little, I agree, but not because of military. It wouldn't be enough for each Department to have one (DOE, USDA, DOD, DOJ, DOT, etc). But of course, this is the country that values death and destruction above all else, so it would be the DOD controlling it all...(thinks spending cuts should start with the military).
Apple Menu -> About this Mac. Intel Core proc is the first gen (no Lion for you), everything else will work. If you need more information, Hit more info. The Line you want is labeled "Model Identifier" and will read something like MacbookPro1,1.
Either that or just Google/Linux.

Personally I miss the days of simpler Linux.

NT SP4, 95 OSR2, 98 SE, XP SP2, shall we continue?
Maybe it'll be able to run Vista smoothly at that point.

The UNIX way came first genius. It was DOS that got it backwards.
I tried to find out information on the shortwave, I'm not too good with it though...
I consider Ubuntu to be an example of the problem.

Assuming your laptop still has a functioning battery.
I prefer to use my computer then to be told to restart every 10 minutes.
I hated 3.x. I stayed on 2.x until Chrome was released. Firefox 4+ has brought me an interface that I can stand again.
Most kids today don't know what a modeline is.
So someone should create a NoScript plugin for Office?
I doubt it, Linus uses Fedora.
I know that I stopped buying Ubisoft games when they first added this feature. It hurts the customers more then the pirates.
You might want to stay away from Solaris 11 then...

I'd mod you up if I had points, was thinking the same thing.

Now I'm going to go boot my 8088 Laptop....also have a working 286 Laptop....
