I've never belong to the omg people are watching me through my cookies paranoia brigade.
However, with the spawning of all these (very useful) Google services, I've got into the
habit of using different browsers / browser profiles for different things. I don't want
Google drawing conclusions (however non-evil they might be) between, for example, my emails and my search
habits.
And upon reading about Google analytics when it came out, and noticing some of my favorite sites were
already using it, I gave it the honor of being the only "foreign" entry in my/etc/hosts file:
European individuals can gain exemptions from having their data retentioned
if they sign a waiver giving away all rights to their first-born to the audio-video
retail industry.
Those without children may instead put their signature at
the bottom of a blank terrorist confession sheet and mail it to their
local secret service. This will also automatically enter them into a free prize draw
with many chances to win free flights to a European location of the CIA's choice.

Some joker has gone and protected the interview page (even for registered users). What's the point of it being on a wiki if I can't be bold and edit Jimbo Wales' answers to reflect a more neutral point of view?
If Mr. Chase had spent the 30 seconds or required to create a Wikipedia account (valid email address not required!) he would have stopped the "cyber-sleuth" (hah) in his tracks. Wikipedia seems to laboring under the apprehension that IP addresses are somehow anonymous, whereas they provide far more information to third parties than an account name does (unless the poster is savvy enough to use a reasonably anonymous proxy not blocked by Wikipedia).
They implemented the rel="nofollow" attribute on the English WP at one point, but this was removed (and rightly so - Wikipedia passes page rank to many good sites, and it didn't make any appreciable difference to link spamming anyway).
"Anonymous" edits are identified by their originating IP. Depending on where you're posting from, a user account (which can be easily created without any form of validation, including email verification) will provided more "anonymity".
IMHO (as an anti-linkspam vigilante on one Wikipedia language version) it's high time anonymous users are prevented from edits which contain external links, as the chances are these will be to spammy sites.
"Rock Face of Kilauea Volcano Collapses" almost had me lunging for CNN in the hope of spectacular footage of Hawaii sliding into the ocean beneath mile-high plumes of steam and lava, while the USA's west coast falls into panic before the approaching tsunami.
"Biggish Lumps of Lava Miles from Kilauea Fall Into Sea" would be a more accurate description. Maybe the editors can use that for next week's dupe.
A brief search reveals some recipies reproduced from an external site. There is a link provided, but no indication what copyright the recipie is under; the same for a recipie copied from Wikibooks (a clear GFDL violation).
I haven't got the full text back from my lawyer, but in future all of my
transactions with Sony will be accompanied by a "vendor user license agreement":

IMPORTANT-READ CAREFULLY: By accepting my (hereafter: "CONSUMER") purchase of your product, you (hereafter: "VENDOR") will need to review and agree to be bound by an vendor user license agreement or "VULA", the terms and conditions of which are set forth below.
As soon as you have agreed to be bound by the terms and conditions of the VULA, this transaction will automatically install a small proprietary software program (the "SOFTWARE") into YOUR BOOKKEEPING SYSTEM.
...
From time to time CONSUMER will use the SOFTWARE to enforce his
statutory rights, including checking the validity of any data held on
him and updating it as he deems fit and in accordance with relevant
privacy and data protection laws.
...not long after Google World Domination (TM) (Beta) is released, we'll be reading Slashdot stories like this:
"AFP reports that Google is offering free sewerage disposal to all 70,000 residents of its headquarter's hometown, Mountain View, CA. Google expects the entire city to be covered by next June. Basic disposal will be free while Google retains the right to charge for premium services."
This could certainly explain Google's interest in dark fiber.
It's nowhere near as mature as InnoDB, at least so it could be used as a drop-in replacement: "Even though Berkeley DB is in itself very tested and reliable, the MySQL interface is still considered gamma quality. We continue to improve and optimize it."
I was using the "don't ask my password for two weeks" feature - Gmail just logged me out although the two weeks aren't up, and after logging in again I had a session ID tacked on to the URL like this:

which I've never seen before.
I think it'll be a long Friday night at the 'Plex.

This crazy-sounding system does not exist in Germany. IANAL, but it sounds like it would break some kind of consumer / data protection law.
