What makes RPI the number one wired school? Number of students with laptops? Quinnipiac University mandated freshman usage of laptops a few years ago. When I attended Clarkson back in 1985 all freshman were required to purchase $1600 Zeniths. We were the real deal back then - the sophomores has only *one* 5 1/2" disk drive, and we got *two*. Nah nah, we didn't have to switch disks to make copyies of Hack. :-)

My point is that lots of schools were wired for ethernet or general computer usage a long time ago. I am curious what makes RPI number one.

I do not agree with this. I thought exactly the same thing a year and a half ago and built a Dual PII 400mhz system on a Gigabit 6bxd motherboard. When running Linux the system *rocks* compared to similarly priced single processor system at the time.

However, it sucks as a game machine. Unless you run Win2000, then all windows games are just on a single processor. While 400mhz is fairly fast for my needs on a gaming system, having it dual processor enabled would make flight simulator, Quake or Reader Rabbit's Kindergarten way faster. :-)

For the average user using Win98, spending money on a single processor system is the way to go. For the average geek running Win2000 or Linux, then I agree that a dual setup is ideal. I really like mine, but it is not for everyone.

p.s. I have been spending more time in Windows since I can't find an email client that supports SMTP Auth with mailandnews.com. Otherwise Linux would be almost exclusive.

Right, trickle down economics don't work. When the rich get more money, they don't invest it, which is the assumption that that economic theory is based upon. They spend it on cars, and houses, and so on, and that doesn't trickle down.

For those that need explanation, the construction of cars, houses and so on is what drives our economy. And this is where many of our middle and lower class citizens are employed. Therefore, tax cuts *do* work.

Whereas if you give the money to the middle class or lower classes, they'll spend and invest the money in places where the economic is stimulated.

Exactly. Give a poor person a tax break and they'll spend it on McDonald's dinners twice a week instead of once a week. Very good for the economy also. See, with a tax cut you get a win-win situation.

ALso, is it me, or did Bush never condone a flat tax while saying throughout the debates that giving most of the money back to the richest 2% is what should be done because they pat the highest percentages?

Well, simple math says 2% of $100 is a $2 tax break, and 2% of $1,000,000 is a $2,000 tax break. You see, a flat tax and a flat tax break are two separate and distinct issues. I would wager that all you rich stock owners would benefit greatly under George Bush's tax plan.

Myself, I earn far less than that, but if I had that kind of money I'd still probably pick the Prelude (actually, I just bought a very cool VW Golf Turbo) over one of those big heavy gas guzzling beasts. 17. Re:You need to care on Politics With A Slice Of Lemon · · Score: 1

There was a radio article on NPR last week that described how much money the various police departments in Florida get from the war on drugs. Apparently it is a self-fulfilling cycle - drug money = more money for law enforcement = more drug users and dealers busted = more drug money. The problem is, there is very little due process when seizing and auctioning assets so the Sheriff/local constabulary get to sell the asset without any sort of trial.

People have lost businesses by having their Accounts Payable seized without cause, and being unable to make payroll.

The self-fulfilling prophecy has a downside: the police get most of their funding from drugs, so if there is a downturn in drug/cash seizures then effectively their funding is cut. So the politicians are constantly applying pressure to keep up the raids.

Wow, what a police state South Florida has turned into.

  18. Guilt may drive third party voting... on Should You Vote? · · Score: 1

I know for myself, guilt is driving my voting over the past few elections, and this one to vote for a third party candidate. At least when the elected president screws up I can honestly say "I didn't vote him in, but *you* did".

Furthermore, there are issues that I agree with on both democrats or republicans. So I cannot assuage my guilt over giving up one principle to get another. For example, I believe in the individual rights written in the 2nd amendment (Well formed militia = individual rights), but I also agree with Al Gore's more liberal social policies and probably Supreme Court nominations. Hence, neither candidate fits my bill, no of the issues is primary, so either a) I don't vote (and feel guilty for not doing so) or b) vote, but choose a third party candidate.

There is rarely anything the president does that I wish to stand up for and acknowledge that I voted for that man.

Now I might have preferred Clinton at the time, or not, I can't remember, but voting my conscience, along with a rather large percentage of the rest of the US population gave us Slick Willy.

Back to your point - where did it get us, who are interested in a third party? This election probably has the most coverage of the various third party candidates, including surprising coverage of Browne. However neither of them has a snowballs chance...

Anyway, I think it'll likely be *forever* before a third party candidate gets into office unless the two existing parties screw up royally and some amazingly good centrist third party candidate suddenly comes on the scene.
