I was right there with you until I noticed the Dixie Chicks link. Actually, I wasn't with you at all, I think that the idea of open source software being customized for specific applications because the source is freely available is severely over rated. I think most companies/governments/people want a solution that works out of the box. Unless they are going to develop an application from scratch, I don't think they want to deal with the source code. That said, I'm surprised that there isn't a piece of software already written for securely redacting legal documents.
Actually, since IE has roughly 80% market share, I would say that the 20% extra work/money/time spent would be "tweaking" sites to work with the "standards". That said, it would be nice if we had a "standard" that would work with all browsers.
"Microsoft's Web site recommends a minimum 300MHz Pentium II
processor and 128MB of RAM to run the Windows XP beta"
"They are pretty steep requirements just to run an OS! what happens when you
want to do some real work? go out and spend MORE money! Sorry Microsoft,
along with the activation scheme, high price, this is one of the last nails
in the coffin, and that is, the expectation that everyone has a bank balance
the size of Billy Gates, and can instantly go out and buy what ever upgrade
they need JUST to get Windows work'in."
OMG teh 300 MHZ and 128 MB ram!!! In a very short amount of time, the system requirements for Vista will be just as laughable.
Exactly. This whole thing is a publicity stunt. He went about it in such a manner that he was guaranteed not to get to see the PM, just so he could say that the PM refused to see him. Nice tactics.
I never implied that the PM would schedule anything on his own. I am implying, however, that for RMS, it makes a better story to say "Hey, we asked for a meeting and never got a reply, so we showed up and they wouldn't let us in." The PM of France might just have a few things on his plate that he considers more important. So, no I don't think two weeks was a reasonable amount of time to expect to get a reply of any sort.
I don't doubt that the prime minister has no intention of meeting with RMS, but in fairness their request to see the PM was two weeks before they showed up. It is quite possible, and in fact likely, that the PM of France might actually be so busy as to not be able to schedule a meeting within 2 weeks. We're talking about DRM here, not a pending German invasion. It can wait. I doubt there are many world leaders you could get a meeting with in less than two weeks.
Step 1: Come up with a pet cause and a petition.
Step 2: Show up unannounced at world leader's office or residence and (SURPRISE) not be allowed in.
Step 3: Publish a story about how you were denied your meeting with the world leader.
Step 4: ???
Step 5: Profit (if allowed by the GPL).
Well, I doubt there are many (if any) countries in the world where you can show up unannounced at the door and get a meeting with the leader.

Hyperbolic strawman eh. Well, OK. I am absolutely serious when I say that I am not against stem cell research of any kind. It is still a fact that so far not a whole lot has come of fetal stem cell research. There has been more promising results with cord blood research and adult stem cells. So while maybe I shouldn't have used the word "everybody", it is my opinion that there is way too much optimism over fetal stem cells.
B. There is NO guarantee that embryonic stem cells will ever cure anything.
I'm not at all against stem cell research of any kind, I just get tired of everybody acting like stem cells will provide the cure for everything. So far, not a whole lot has come of embryonic stem cell research.
Try and keep up. The whole point of EXPO is that computers can't parse a scientific article written in human language. If you could write a piece of software that could parse the original article there would be no point in having EXPO. If everyone starts using EXPO, both for new papers and going back through old ones, you will quickly devleop a database that can be used to help streamline future research.
Very appropriate nickname. Spun. Who am I to question someone with a low 4-digit ID, but seriously, have you read TMMs posts. They are ALWAYS written to the general Slashdot groupthink. Windows bad, linux good. Bush Bashing. Privacy Concerns. Just the sheer volume of posts alone should be a clue. Most of the time he takes a small quote from TFA and then does a quick google search and puts in the first link to something close to relevant. Moderators love links, except goatse and tub girl. He uses his subscription to make sure he can get that doen in time for a first post. Bam, instant interesting or insightful mods.
Another result I find useful is that I get much more directly targeted advertising than ever before. It's nice now, no more tampax fliers in my mailbox, but it's handy to know Staples has a new SD 1G card available for my camera at less than $100.
You apparently forget where you are. On Slashdot, advertising of any kind is considered the worst oppression since the holocaust... Uh Oh... Godwin:(
Maybe, just maybe, not everybody thinks Windows sucks. I know it's hard for some people in the/. world to believe, but a lot of people (maybe most people) don't think Windows sucks. I run XP. It never crashes. I've never had a virus. It runs every piece of software I need to use. Where does this suck? I will give you that spyware can be a problem, but you just need to be careful of that. Just to try to save some karma, I am not trying to be a fanboy here. I do use Linux and like it, it's just not my primary OS.
To be fair, an front airbag (in the steering wheel) wouldn't help you in either of the two accidents you described where you were hit in the back and the side. Granted, you said that the first accident pushed you into the car in front of you, so maybe it should have gone off there.
You are wrong about cars being built stronger though. Modern cars are designed to absorb collisions. This is why relatively minor accidents can cause major damage to the car. Better the car than your body. In the 50's, cars were built strong. A head on collision at 30 MPH would cause $50 worth of damage to the car but everyone inside would be killed in gruesome fashion. I've tried to explain this to my wife's grandmother. Her 1995 or so Lincoln was totaled when she ran into a stopped car at about 25 - 30 MPH. She keeps going on and on about how her old studebaker wouldn't even have had a dent. I keep explaining to her that she would most likely be dead in the Studebaker. Oh Well. I do think that it would be nice if modern bumpers could take a 10 MPH collision without needing replaced, though.
I should have read further down the thread. There are products available for redacting documents.

Ah, the hours I've wasted in front of the command line interface interface.

Here's some entertainment for you. From google groups regarding Windows XP system requirements we get such gems as this:
OMG teh 300 MHZ and 128 MB ram!!! In a very short amount of time, the system requirements for Vista will be just as laughable.
Not only that, but there are several other sites that include the (relatively common) words Joseph, Cotton and Seabreeze. I call Troll!!!
Yeah, that... and the fact that since January it's been fall and is almost winter in the southern hemishpere.
Northern hemisphere != the world.

I don't get it. A great president, great music, awesome clothes and 512K of something. Where's the high price?

A. Stemcell research has not been outlawed.

MAD doesn't work when one or both sides have a large suicidal faction.
