  1. It's not about the role, its about the industry on Ask Slashdot: How to Avoid The Worst of a Tech Bubble? · · Score: 1

When a bubble bursts some industries will get hurt worse than others. Tech is really in just about all industries now and will be impacted but there are enough shortages that if you are good at your job in one industry you should be able to transition to another. The best things you can do to prepare for a bubble bursting is to have a financial cushion in case finding the next job takes some time and minimize your non-job related commitments. For example, if you think a bubble is coming make sure you can afford a pay cut if you do lose your job and have to take a lower paying one. Hold off on buying a house since if your region were hit hard it makes it more difficult to move to one that wasn't. Minimize your debt. Things like that.

That is horrible advice - and it is colored by your own targeted experience.

I have followed Ken Starks effort to provide disadvantaged children with Linux computers for 5-6 years now (maybe longer) and he is doing some amazing things. There are a lot of distros and software out there and Reglue provides an age/environment appropriate distro and software to the children that he helps. At this point there is not enough hardware available to give every disadvantaged child a computer so it is focused on those that will make the most of it. Good students that will and can take advantage of the computers provided. He makes every effort to get them internet access also although it might just be for a few months to get them started - he also routinely tries to get ISP and local businesses to provide connections to the families he helps. Even if all it means is that the student can be at home working on a paper or assignment while having to watch siblings instead of having to choose between going to a library and leaving them alone or not getting the assignment done the program is providing good ROI.

I don't think that it is accurate to say predatory lending laws prevent cards from being LEGAL. They may have prevented them from being profitable enough to grow beyond the upper/upper-middle classes. Amex, Carte Blanche and Diner's club were created in the 1950's.

Having a credit card and using it wisely is an important and vital skill to have - paying off in full each month to get a cut of the interbank fee just makes sense. And if you are really careful taking advantage of interest free / other special offers can really pay off too.

Just because mortgage interest is tax deductible does not mean that you should not pay off your mortgage. No matter how much interest you pay when you deduct it you will only get back a PORTION of it so you are still net out of pocket in almost all situations. When you start taking into account "real" interest rates and rates of inflation then sometimes your advice might make sense. That said, I do have a mortgage and its nice to see the deduction but I am still paying a lot more in interest than it is saving me on my taxes.

I think its an important distinction because if they were breaking the law then there are other avenues Snowden could have pursued that probably would not have required breaking his NDA. However since many at LEAST believed it was legal and appropriate that is what required Snowden to go public - and I think makes him more hero than traitor.
