isnt it more meaningful if they charged this on securities transactions on wall street?
Yep, that's what I thought he was proposing when I read the summary.
A commission on all stock&share transactions would stop all the millisecond stock trading and make the economy more stable. People would keep their stocks longer. It's also where the rich people play so it will tax them in a fair way (it's not a fixed tax, they only pay when they play the market).
Seems like win-win to me. That's why they'll never do it.
Why hasn't it happened then? Because there is no terrorist threat.
This. Times a million.
If terrorists wanted to attack the USA there's nothing stopping them. Everything they need can be bought inside US borders and there's no shortage of targets to choose from.
The TSA is a magic tiger-scaring stone. A very, very expensive tiger scaring stone. Not just in the money sense but in the freedom sense and the inalienable rights sense.
you'd probably still be noticed hanging around the fence or whatever.
Last time I checked the sell gillie suits in the same place as they sell.50 cal rifles...
You're missing the point though: If terrorists wanted to attack the USA they don't need to go through airport security to do it.
Anybody who thinks they do need to get through security is an idiot. Anywhere people group together is a target - including the queue for the scanners (bag of explosives+ball bearings detonated in the queue...?)
Even if they did feel like going through security there's still easy/unstoppable ways to do it: * Put stuff up their asses where the machines can't see it. * Send several people through with small bottles of liquid explosive, put it all together in a big bottle on the other side ("small bottles only"? Duh!)
Are they offering to share the loot with the ISPs when they win a court case...?
How about a part of the increased profits? According to them they lose tens of billions per year due to piracy. Are they going to reward the ISPs with a fair share of that?
I'm no expert. Intuitively, a block of ice breaking away from a bigger block of ice kinda makes me think there's melting, thus warming, involved.
TFA says that they're making the announcement to try and avoid all the sensationalist news stories that will appear when the mainstream media gets hold of it.
More likely he is beating lashing his daughter for violating the law. It is not necessarily a statement on whether the law is just.
More to the point, he was beating her for downloading music. The jury's common sense has prevailed. No punishment is too severe or unjustifiable for crimes like that.
Am I missing something? I can do it in linear time...
* Start with the bottom pancake and work towards the top * Locate next pancake, insert the spatula beneath it and flip it to the top * Insert the spatula at the position where it goes when sorted and flip again.
I was expecting this one: https://www.xkcd.com/963/
High Frequency Trading makes tons of money out of thin air.
No it doesn't. It skims money from everybody who trades in stocks and isn't plugged into the internal high speed networks.
In other words: It's cheating
ie. Theft.
Problem: People with resources can hide their income offshore...
Do you know of a website which promotes a much simplified and universal tax scheme?
You don't need a website, it's very simple:
a) No income tax.
b) Higher sales tax.
People who spend less, pay less. It's much easier to administer. There's no point in anybody hiding money offshore (less loopholes).
just require all stock to be held for two weeks before they can be traded again.
Nope. That will just make traders switch to gambling on futures and make everything *less* stable.

you're a moron who will not hesitate to open his fat mouth regardless of how clueless he is on the topic at hand.
He got first post though...!
To me the douche in the story is the one who didn't do the work but still wanted a pass.
Somebody saying "no" to that person? I wish we had a few more of those.
This is one reason I cringe when I hear about impromptu programming tests at interviews.
Um, don't those same tests allow you to ask questions and look things up if needed, ie. they're the opposite of what you're claiming.
Did you know that the hottest months are July/August but the day with most sunlight is in June!
Note that the US, who in principle did not sign the Kyoto protocol, actually reduced emissions significantly
This word "significantly"....I don't think it means what you think it means.

Citation needed...
Both of those are real things, one of them leads to the other.

Wonder if it will work...

The article an summary were not very exact in their wording.
No Nobel prize for me then...? :-(
Isn't that what I'm doing?
Number of compares, not number of flips
Where does it say that...?
FTA: "if you can find a polynomial time solution to the pancake problem then you have proved that P=NP."
"f(n) = 2(n-1)" is a polynomial solution of order 1 .... where's my million dollar (and Nobel) prize?
you haven't accounted for determining the location of the next pancake.
In real life you'd have to do that but the article was about the number of flips.
PS: If the pancake is burnt on one side then you just flip it over when it's on the top:
Maximum number of flips to sort burnt pancakes = 3 x Number of pancakes.
Am I missing something? I can do it in linear time...
* Start with the bottom pancake and work towards the top
* Locate next pancake, insert the spatula beneath it and flip it to the top
* Insert the spatula at the position where it goes when sorted and flip again.
Number of flips = 2 x Number of pancakes.
