    Yep. I reckon an American pilot in a Boeing could have just flipped a switch and fixed all that. They'd all be relaxing with cold ones as we speak.

    Why not? We already have software that converts stereo music to true surround sound.

    The eye is only stereo. Extracting parallax information and converting movies to 3D should be easy.

    Manned space flight is a complete waste of money right now. It achieves very little and makes everything an order of magnitude heavier and more complex. We need less astronauts and more Mars rovers.

    Yep.

    There's a reason the police don't do anything until a person has been missing for 24 (or 48) hours. It's because 999,999 times out of 1,000,000 the "missing" person will turn up before then.

    Nope. In reality they sell very few of these cards, they mostly make them to get their brand name in the headlines. Any actual sales are just a bonus

    Yeah, I meant the performance, not the physical construction.

    My job is 3D-graphics programming but I never pay more than about $150 for a graphics card. It's pointless trying to stay ahead on the graphics performance curve.

    How can you compare something that costs $80,000 (plus running costs) to something that costs $800?

    The other big difference is that this thing will be "normal" in a couple of years and only cost $100. Mid-range PCs will have this as standard.

    A Hummer, OTOH, will still be just as expensive and just as stupid.

    It's not about "not having a choice". Windows programmers aren't stupid, they figured out IDEs are far more productive.

    To answer the question: Visual C++ Express is the one. Lightweight IDE, best compiler, most standards compliant, best debugger ... it's a free download so don't waste time looking at anything else.
