Start+R brings up the run menu, in case you didn't know. Recent applications will have no effect on this operation at all. Also, if I want a calculator, I do the same thing. I use it about once a month, tops. If I used it more, I'd assign a hotkey to it. But I wouldn't put it on a flip-out fancybar.

I really can't see why people still complain about this. It's really a very simple procedure to switch back to 2000-look mode. It's the first thing I do.

And i can't see it being any different in Longhorn, you *will* be able to turn all this 'new' stuff off.

If all they want to do is chack mail, and look at pictures, why don't they stick with XP?

Why do you think they would upgrade anyway?

And as others have said, by the time longhorn reaches release, the cards you need to render it well will be part&parcel of anything Dell/Gateway/whatever will want to sell.

A couple of things that seem to have passed you by:

Secretaries don't 'just' write memos. Only an ignorant person would think this. Also, they have to read memos from other people/companies, most of whom will be using Word.

Secretaries at most companies won't be upgrading to Longhorn immediately. There is no need for them to do so. Everything they need can be done with 2000/XP. By the time they get around to getting a longhorn-enabled computer, shader 2.0 hardware will be relatively inexpensive. You're thinking of current top-end cards, whereas, in reality, they will be entry level by the time most people upgrade to Longhorn. (not upgrading is also a possibility)

If you think moving all the GUI rendering to the GPU will negatively affect the performance of the CPU, you've been reading the wrong books. What this will do is remove the load from the CPU, thus making it more fficient.

My response to MS gloating about how many units they sell is "so what, all the gamers that already have a PS2 are now getting around to buying an Xbox also."

Exactly. I've had my PS2 for ages now, and it wasn't until very recently that I even considered buying an XBox.

Having said that, I'm actually quite pleased with it, the newer, smaller controller is far more appealing than the huge chunk of shit that I first played with (which put me off buying it altogether)

The other reason for the recent rise in popularity is that modding them is so much easier these days. XBMedia Center is stable, the bios's are all stable, the dashboards all seem to work pretty well.

I got mine modded before I even plugged it in.

I live above an off licence. It is usually a three minute round trip, unless there is a queue, which means sometimes it can take up to an ungodly five minutes. It's handy. But I'm still not sure if it makes up for the amount of noise I get in the summer with the windows opening onto a main town road, and every chav retard in a tinted-windowed, trumpet exhausted hatchback driving past all night. Luckily, easy access to alcohol can solve that problem...

I was using crazybrowser for my tabbed IE experience. Now Firefox 1.0 is out, and with the TabExtensions extension, it behaves identically, but better. being able to 'undo' closing a tab is a godsend. The only problem with Firefox that I have found is that you have to install the suite of extensions each time. Having 'Extension packs' would be a result.
