Why does somebody driving down the (public) road taking a picture of your (public) license plate on your car parked in (public) plain view and comparing it to a list need oversight?
Because law will not allow me to cover or remove the license plate. It would be like saying it's perfectly fine for a person to take a picture of you through the window in your home, and having a law requiring you to have an open window in every room.
I am serious. You said maybe I should ask some Indians or South Americans. Well my mistake was I asked Slashdot. I sincerely did not understand why it mattered, but it seemed important to some people on Slashdot. So I politely asked "why do we care about this?" and "what are the consequences?"
Around here, you get modded troll for even trying to find out what the problem is.
And the person who replied didn't tell me an answer. That person said something about me not doing my homework. On top of that, my question got modded "troll". My reply stated, I don't think that's a good way to get people to care or do something about the problem. If one felt it was important, it would probably be better to answer the question than reply like that, because that might cause people to not look further for an answer. And that got modded "overrated". I don't know which moderation they're going to pick for this message. Maybe Troll or Flamebait, since those haven't been used yet. But seriously, if this is a big deal, modding away any question about it is not the way to spread the message.
That's the thing. I don't have any reason to look it up, and perhaps many more people see no reason to look it up. It seems like it's just a bunch of guys arguing over an academic issue. And the people who seem to think it matters won't even say why.
Of course I'm only going by the article summary, and I didn't really read that. But if this game actually has to download its content every time you play, I'd think latency or bandwidth caps will kill it long before the ideology concerning DRM. Nobody's going to keep buying games that shut down if your ISP is crap. Because (in the USA anyway) everybody's ISP is crap. And when the 3-strikes law is passed all over the world, a large portion of the gamers will be permanently offline anyway.
If you actually hit something of value with that tiny drone it's not going to do much really except maybe cause a few more oppressive/stupid laws to be passed.
I wonder how many true terrorists will read that and instantly be sold on the idea of low-cost drones...
They'd have to make an app store that works exactly like the iTunes store. That is, give people a way to sell apps for a low cost and make it really difficult for most people to get them without paying. It worked for the iPod. I'm thinking it didn't work for Android cause they left out the DRM part, which is good for my brother but bad for people trying to sell the apps.
I wonder how much energy we could save if Windows and Linux would only load what's necessary for you to load an application, rather than load a million "services/processes" on startup. I think I'd be fine if my computer loaded just the mouse, keyboard, and display support and a background picture. Then if the computer needed to generate a sound or play an mp3, it could load the audio support. And if I need the network connection, it can load the network support. And if I plug in my iPod, it can load iTunes and all of the baggage that comes with that. There are times I use my computer without any of those things, yet they all load anyway. Aside from saving energy and making startup faster, I bet the hard disk would last longer with less reads. Why can't they go back to only loading anything when it's needed, rather than assuming you'll need them?
Regardless of whether you're the male or female in the relationship, what you really need is an eject button or a lever that instantly separates the two vehicles. It has to be instant so you don't have time to get over your temporary rage and think about what you're doing. And for what it's worth, maybe with two whole cars, one can act as a backup system for the other. If one car malfunctions, the other half can detect unusual activity and act accordingly.
I remember reading that if a person who is filing a United States tax return incorrectly claims Earned Income Credit, that person may not be allowed to get the credit in the future. Maybe that thinking should be applied to the filing of patents, and maybe even lawsuits.
It sounds like they don't have a problem with Windows. The person asking the question has a problem with Windows. Windows 7 will run all the same software and have very little learning curve. He's going to create a world of hurt for his loved ones for some ideological reason.
Also, the person should not take guppies who are happy in a Windows pond and dump them in a pool with sharks who reply to feature requests with "build it yourself" and reply to questions with links to Google searches.
Also, I hope these people don't like iPods, video cameras, or inkjet printers, because they'll never get those to work. Linux is not for these people. Mod me troll or flamebait or whatever but you know I'm right.
I think the most plausible theory illustrated by this story is one that slave drivers came up with a long time ago. That is, if you want to succeed, free labor is a lot better than paid employees. I think he succeeded because he had a lot of people doing hard work for him, with nothing in return except maybe their name in some viewable log. I also think it helps if you can afford to spend money on a bunch of failures (one of which cost $250,000) and still afford to do another project. So if you're rich in the first place and you have free labor, then this article is certainly worth reading.
I think you're giving all types of engineers too much credit. Cars with no brakes, VCR's that eat video tapes, potholes, phones that can't operate in normal weather, bridges that fall in, exploding spacecraft, leaning towers... All types of engineers are every bit as much crap as you think software engineers are. They just get a lot more credit because they've been crap longer. But I'm not bitter...
I think it helps to call them all viruses. Having a thousand different names just makes things inefficient and confusing. It also helps antivirus makers sell you an antivirus and an antispyware, when there should just be one product.
England did think of it, and they tried to stop the colonists from meeting up, which is precisely why "the right of the people peaceably to assemble" was put into the first amendment.
And the fact, that it worked, is precisely why they want to take that from us now.

Why do we care about this? What is the consequence if somebody thinks the earth is getting warmer or cooler?

I have a full fledge laptop and it still costs less than the iPad...

I think those are Mike & Ike's...
What makes you so sure their engineers aren't crap too?

rtfm... Oh wait... This is Windows. I could never find the man pages for that system.
Press F1...

Based on my experience, I'd say they're just waiting for somebody to ask so they can promote Google and call you stupid.
My first thought was these are people who use their LCD screens in something other than native resolution, and look at blurry text all day.
I bet it will also get you signed up for their social network...
I think plotters are cool. They're like vector graphics at its finest.

My first thought was Flash is the reason for the death of ActiveX...
I'm bookmarking your post so I have something, to link to, the next time somebody asks why I prefer the GUI over the command line.
